Officially I have all our garlic in, I did a massive plant up a few weeks ago and 💯 germination rate has gone extremely well. Such a comeback from last year! Woohoo! I was then given another few bulbs of garlic from my mum who had sourced the best quality from our local garlic farm! So I've now put them all in, I'm excited to watch them grow into the best garlics you've ever seen 🤤 This here is my kind of garlic, a healthy double layer of cloves right there! That's a Jalapeño wrap! The last of them have been fully harvested, pickled and stored! We have enough to last us until next season! Sadly I'd neglected the garden a little with life becoming busy and the aphids and completely set in on a lot of our plants. I decided to do a cull of at least 6 plants. Harvested what was still good and fully trimmed back three plants that will be ready to go into the hothouse that may or may not get set up! This year we decided to have a heap of our chilli's/Jalapenos & Caps in pots purely to transfer for possible over wintering! So if U get my butt into gear we will do just that! We have become quite addicted to jalapenos on anything! Getting all of our fruit plants all ready to go.. going to be a good amount of fruit this summer.. What we have here are Arapaho, Natchez and chester blackberries.. (still have to add a couple more triple crowns and I'm probably going to head back and get a couple more Natchez from @chesterfieldorganicorchards 🥰) On the blueberry front we have a patriot, a Reka, a Chandler and Chippewa.. To go with our two older large Duke blueberry bushes in the back (similar to above might have to grab some more blueberries from @chesterfieldorganicorchards and @blueberrybillfarms ) We also have a plethora of heritage ever bearing raspberries + some Latham raspberries.. We have everbearing strawberries as well as all star strawberries and we might look to add a bunch more of these in different varieties because they're so much nicer in a planter. There's also some sweet potato ready to go as well as potato tubers that are already planted. Boy am I excited to get homegrown raspberries back in my life!! This was a random @bunnings buy a few weeks back. It was a reasonable size plant marked down with those yellow stickers! I had to have it. I had them growing at my last property in a huge quantity! I've started it in a pot and will upgrade to a bigger pot when needed so that it can be transportable for the future! I've been amazed that it has produced berries in just a few short weeks of being planted! Bring on big handfuls in the near future! FACT: Raspberries would have to be my favourite fruit! We are here again with another clucky hen! 😅 Getting plenty of eggs now, the girls are back in full force! This one quietly "chicken growled" at me with each egg I picked up making sure I wasn't coming anywhere near her "special warm eggs of nothing but yolk" She will be kicked off her nest & fluffed up and sent out to free range and forget about what she was doing! We encourage them off the nest purely for the fact that we don't have a rooster, the eggs aren't fertilised, the hen has currently stopped laying eggs & it puts a strain on the chickens health for absolutely no return. In the past I have always encouraged cluckiness because I used to breed and raise all sorts of different varieties of chickens with our roosters. But those days are over. We decided in the beginning that we do not have a need for roosters or baby chicks. Yesterday was my 36th Birthday! It's been a busy few days, we went away for the weekend to unwind and rejuvenate. We came back to 40 degree days and a garden in need of regular watering! I've had a few days off from gardening so I thought I might just pop a selfie in here that's all about me because I can! (Although I'm not sure why it feels so weird there is not one bit of produce in sight 😬) This year I want greatness in my life, I want more thriving & less survival. Cucumbers officially have succumbed to mildew. We tore them out and replaced them with new seedlings in hope will get another crop in before the cool weather starts! 👌 We got plenty of cucumbers out of this lot, it was crazy prolific, sharing with family and friends! We grew them on a trellis this year which helped most of them sit off the ground. This worked great! I've only ever grown Lebanese cucumbers as they are the preferred variety within my family but I'd def love to try another variety next time just because experimenting is a part of the gardener's world. I'm pretty sure I promised last season that next season's corn would rock! So here it is, it rocks. Corn kernels for dayyyys. This year was clearly planned with perfect hand pollination. We planted them in a single row on a dripper and they grew amazing! Hand pollinated in its right timing, we have perfected the corn cob! We have enjoyed grilling these on the Webber! I asked Lucas to help me with a corn photoshoot, you know just a normal thing to be doing. We had some fun with it! Some corn had been slightly spoilt by a pest, Lucas thought it would be fun to see if corn cobs can fly? Well they definitely tried 😆 All our corn has now been harvested, eaten and thoroughly enjoyed. Chilli season is in full force! 🔥🔥 #dontforgetthegloves These are just half of what we had on one bush and it's our first proper harvest this year! This bush was grown last season, overwintered and has come back extremely strong and crazy prolific. We quickly worked out that these are actually too hot to eat fresh so we now know this particular variety gets picked, dried and crushed and used as chilli flakes and it's the most amazing flavour. Chilli flakes are considered a staple in our household, so instead of heading to the supermarket we make our own and they last ages! Gloves are a must & I personally air dry on a tray. With our current heat it really won't take that long to shrivel up ready to be stored in a jar ready for consumption 🙌 I'm growing a new chilli variety this year which I'm most excited about, but you'll have to watch this space until they are ready. Of course it's the slowest growing variety, being that it's the one I'm most excited to harvest and try! Are you a chilli lover? We have been non stop for almost 2 weeks straight here with a lot of family time and I have not spent as much time in the garden. Hence why I've been a little quiet over here. But yesterday I got myself back in the garden and harvested this basket of strawberries! I'd actually let them get away from me and this was only half of what was originally there for picking, the other half got tossed because they were left too long 😭 I decided to freeze the lot because we have so many more almost ripe! Remember when I planted these strawberries not so long back? Struggling, no fruit, scraggly. Well they are full, luscious and pumping out the fruit! They are in an extremely happy patch now where they will stay! We have just started to see so many runners going for dear life so I'm going to pot them up and give them to friends and family! Just over a week's difference of cutting out around 10 -15 un-pollinated zucchinis that had gone rotten, and we have picked at least 20 zucchinis 😳 so they are definitely in full force! We have already had 4 zucchini meals in the last few days! We just got back from a weekend away, and they were BIG! But doing our absolute best to stay on top of them at a nice size so that we don't have any go to waste. I've alerted the family to our zucchini's arrival & they will be handed out accordingly! Worse case scenario they are a great food source for the chickens and can also be thrown to the worms! Has your zucchini Glut begun? Isn't it fun!! Bring it on!! How awesome are those long awaited days of having your first harvest of something you planted a while back! The first handful of produce that you've been waiting for! GREEN BEANS!!! They have begun! I've never grown them well because I have had the best setup! This year we grew them up against the chook pen because there was a fence ready for them to climb! We thought, you beauty! Easy peasy! Then the chooks made it their daily snack to stunt the growth each day just for fun! How did I not see this coming? Hahaha So we put up another fence a few metres off the other fence and boy did those beans take off! Thankfully we got to them in time! Tomato Tuesday. I love yellow tomatoes, they are my absolute favourite. As for the exact variety. No idea. But I'm going with "Yellow" I picked these today & I always get excited when they ripen! But the truth is my tomatoes are failing. They are struggling, I actually don't think they will last more than a few weeks with minimal fruit. But I have put in a backup patch over the weekend in hope that there will be little downtime in between with no fruit! I don't believe tomatoes are all that hard to grow but the last two years haven't been my finest seasons and I'm thinking it's the spot & the ground. Thanks to the warm weeks we have had our new back patch is really just gone crazy with growth! I just love an organised simple set up, I can't steer away from rows lines with drippers for ease of managing the space. We started with asparagus and then within a few weeks it was completely full of so much produce. This is just the beginning, it's going to be an extremely FULL garden in the coming months. We have planted asparagus, zucchini, cucumbers, strawberries, pumpkins, watermelon, corn and green beans... It might turn into the "wildside" 😬 Looking forward to everything in this space! Onions harvested! These onions were pulled out of a pantry because they were sprouting! So I was given them to see if they would grow more onions! I have never grown an onion from an onion... But they grew quite well! Besides being grown too close to each other and only being able to grow so big they were a very successful yield. A few days drying out on the back step and they are ready to be stored for use 👌 Many dishes to be made with all this flavour! It's Tomato Tuesday and our plants are really taking off now. I'd say about 40% have fruit on them already, some are almost ripe! Each year I love the whole process of selecting my seed, planting many different varieties and watching them grow from a little speck, to a seedling, to a plant. This year I've had alot on my plate and opted to buy in all my plants from @bunnings except for a couple that I did sow. The intention was there but I just didn't have the time. So it's been a nice little process of prepping the tomato area that @life_0f_leigh built last year and popping in the new seedlings. It's allowed us to be super organised with the season and get on top of other areas! Win-win! I looked over at my vege patch admiring the view and saw all my purple sprouting broccoli showing pops of bright yellow.... A few warm days and I missed the boat on a harvest! Luckily there was still plenty to grab at! And now the bees will have fun for the next week or two! Eggs collected for the day from our cute little flock of 5! 3 strawberries, eaten on site. A quick selfie because that's what I do now 🤣 did a little hand watering and thats the extent of my garden time today. Over the weekend I started feeling myself again after two weeks of being sick! The sun was out and we got to work around the house & gardens soaking it in and enjoying the energy that had returned 🌞 We got to plant up a lot more seedlings, watering, lawns, organising shed and house. It was a soup day for dinner and the kids were so excited. We went shopping in the garden today. How cool was that? I didn’t even need to go to the store for anything. I had it all in the garden or in our food storage room. Plant what you eat. Did you know you can plant celery? All the veggies were from the garden and the potatoes from Idaho. I grew up with my mom making this soup. Not sure where the original recipe came from. Vegetable Cheese Soup Boil 6-8 potatoes (peeled and cubed) in 1.5 quarts of water (6cups) until done. Sauté: 1 medium onion- chopped 2 stalk celery- chopped 3 carrots- grated 1/4 cup water Add 4-5 chicken cubes and 1 (16oz) jar of cheese whiz to potatoes when done. *I always do more carrots and celery. Mix: 1 can cream of chicken soup 1.5 cups milk 1 Tbsp parsley Add to soup and add vegetables. Happy fall! 🍁 #soupseason #gardenshopping #plantwhatyoueat #garden
Did you plant any " fall" seeds? Planted a few bush beans half hearted in August. They are loaded and not eaten by bugs!! Just nice to have the fresh produce to eat with out the overwhelming amount that needs canned or frozen.
