As many of you will know we are now offering a full day ride on our ponies. Last week we took out Simon on or very first hack riding 7 year old Hades Hill Prince (see photo) who is proving himself to be a brilliant all-rounder. Here's what Simon had to say... "I was looking for more than just a 1 hour hack whilst on holiday in the Lakes, Tom's offering of a full day taking in the local scenery with a picnic lunch, on one of his Fell Ponies, sounded fantastic. Arriving at the site, Tom's knowledge, and history, of the breed was clear. Unlike other stables where you arrive with the horses all ready to go out, Sue (my guide for the day) went through tacking up our horses including the panniers which would hold our goodies for lunch. Unfortunately the weather was not great but that did not spoil the experience. Sue was an accomplished rider but on top of this is also a qualified tour guide so she was full of facts about the local history as well as wider subjects. This certainly added even more to the experience as it embellishes the enjoyment of riding. The ponies, for their size, are incredibly sturdy, sure footed and a fantastic ride. I love a forward going horse and Prince, who I was riding, loved a pacy trot and his canter was so comfortable and enjoyable. We stopped for lunch in woodland, and enjoyed local cheeses, soup and a fresh coffee. Although the scenery was somewhat obscured by the dreadful rain and mist, I can imagine stunning views throughout the ride on a clement day. Although a little cold and all 4 of us very wet (the horses didn't seem to mind) a great experience overall. I would recommend this to anyone who loves riding and is searching for something a little different to the norm on fantastic horses. Tom and Sue make a great team. If I am staying in the Lakes in future I will definitely be doing this again. Thank you Tom for a great experience." We will be running the Windermere hack every week through the spring and summer. It's incredibly rewarding sharing our herd with so many people and I wouldn't change it for the world, growing a team of ridden ponies and finding out about the new characters is an adventure in itself. However running a trekking business is, as all riding centres will tell you hard - the costs to be licensed and insured along with rent are high and that's before you begin with the care of the ponies which is of course the priority. We had a fantastic first season last year, but it is important to me that the ponies get a good break through the winter season - which of course means there is no revenue in the winter months, the months where costs are at their highest. So I have been scratching my head to figure out how to ensure this is a long term viable project so that you guys can continue to enjoy riding these beautiful beasts at the same time as ensuring they aren't ever overworked. So I've come up with a mix of sponsorship/share/crowdfunding plan. This will give us the support financially to cover the whole year consistently even when the ponies are resting, we are not asking for donations ; these sponsorship subscriptions are real value for money - whether it be virtually, or person to pony - sticking your face in their mane and giving them a big squeeze or riding around the countryside on them - there should be an option for everyone. Out today on Amazon and Kobo: book 2 of Josephine Pullein-Thompson's Moors series, and the first book in Gillian Baxter's excellent Bracken Stables series. The Bracken Stables series was cut pretty drastically when it appeared in paperback, but the new one uses the first edition text, with a few corrections of original typos here and there but otherwise it's as is. The book opens with Bobby going off to boarding school, where you can ride, but only once a week and the rides are tame and the horses underwhelming. There is another stable in the village, but Bobby's rather superior school doesn't approve of it at all. Guy sells horses, and that won't do. Bobby has her own ideas, however. Fear Treks the Moor sees Frances, Louisa and their friends coming to the aid of the Jackson family when Mr Jackson has an horrific accident. There's plenty of Pullein-Thompson pony action, plus the mystery of the last boy to turn up on the trek. You might not know, but this wasn't JPT's first venture into mystery. Under the name Josephine Mann she wrote 'A Place with Two Faces', which is romantic fiction, and she also wrote a few detective novels under her own name: Gin and Murder, They Died in the Spring, and Murder Strikes Pink. I think the Moor series gets stronger as it goes, but this is still a solid escapist read. When I was preparing the text I was spirited away into a world where it wasn't raining just about every day, and where you know there's going to be a thoroughly satisfying ending (unless you like doom and gloom, in which case pass).
