It seemed yesterday really was all about the small cats – meet Alex! This little man is a margay, a small, largely arboreal cat native to South and Central America. New face alert – meet Namuu! This gorgeous female Pallas’ cat arrived at Port Lympne from the Cotswold Wildlife Park a short time before Christmas! Today I visited the Fenn Bell Conservation Project, a small zoo set in the grounds of the Fenn Bell Inn near Rochester. I think this is a great little place, and the last time I visited was in November 2021, so I felt a revisit was long overdue! This zoo is home to a variety of small exotic species, including some personal favourites of mine. One of those favourites is the binturong! The Fenn Bell is home to two binturong sisters called Kiki and Suki. In typical binturong fashion the two spent the majority of the day sleeping, but gorgeous Suki raised her head just long enough for me to get this shot of her – isn’t she gorgeous? Binturongs are small mammals classed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List that are native to Southeast Asia. At the bottom of Howletts, just outside of the Old Gorillas area, is where you can find the park’s smallest residents (and Africa’s smallest carnivore species): dwarf mongooses! This is a species that joined the park at the end of last year, when sisters Makena and Amahle arrived from Chester Zoo. Not too long afterwards they were introduced to a male mongoose named Kgosi and, over the summer, Kgosi and Amahle became parents to three beautiful pups! Now that they’re around the three-month mark, the pups are very active and playful and seem to be a bit of a handful for mum and dad! Luckily Amahle’s sister Makena has also been helping to take care of them! These keepers care for our bobcats, serval, opossum, macaques, Geoffrey's cat, and wolf-hybrids. 🐺😺🐵 Helen, our Lead Small Carnivore Keeper, is also our Animal Training & Behavioral Enrichment Coordinator. Training is another part of a zookeeper's daily routine. Keepers train behaviors such as presenting their hip or leg for voluntary vet procedures and exams. Our zookeepers train many of the animals here, like Wallace, the macaque. Wallace is diabetic and receives daily insulin injections; through training and positive reinforcement, keepers are able to administer voluntary insulin injections. 💉

Indian fox, is a species of Asian foxes endemic to the Indian subcontinent. This is a medium-sized fox with an elongated muzzle with black hair in small patches on the upper part of the muzzle. Its large, bushy, black-tipped tail is its most prominent feature, accounting for as much as 60% of the length of its body. Their ears are large in comparison to their body and are possibly an adaptation for thermoregulation in their hot and dry habitats. I think it’s easy when you go to a zoo to not appreciate the lesser known species of animals. As a lover of smaller animals, especially carnivores, I was pleased to spot a Cusimanse (Crossarchus Obscurus) experience when looking what to do at @winghamwildlifepark on Monday. The small diurnal carnivore, is a member of the Mongoose family and is a very social animal. Reddish brown fur and around a foot in length, they weigh little over 1kg and have quite a cute growl and squeak on them. Found in West Africa, they like forested areas with water nearby and therefore they don’t need the open grasslands or savannahs that other Mongoose species like. Winghams indoor and outdoor exhibits are similar to many Mongoose exhibits and whilst of a nice size, it’s a shame there is not more foliage or water to replicate a natural habitat. That said, it is a nicer exhibit than some I’ve seen at the other holdings in the UK, of which there are 7 in total. The slender mongoose 🌍 These small mammals are one of the most common species of mongooses in Africa: they can be found pretty much anywhere south of the Sahara. 🐾 They tend to live in savanna habitats and semi-arid plains but are very adaptable and can also be found sometimes alongside roads or close to human villages 🏠 🥩 These creatures are primarily carnivorous but are in general very opportunistic omnivores: they will eat anything from lizards, rodents, insects, snakes, birds, amphibians, carrion, eggs and occasionally fruits 🍉 👫 Slender mongooses are mostly diurnal and tend to live alone or in pairs. They are very recognizable by the black curled tip of their tail which is very distinctive of that species 👀 📸 Even if it is quite common to see one of these guys, it is usually quite hard to take a good photograph of one of them as they usually tend to run away from you quite quickly! Akagera is home to over 90 species of mammals, including the most sought-after carnivores at the top of the food chain, like lions, leopards, and spotted hyenas. Akagera also boasts a healthy number of smaller carnivores, including African civets, serval cats, genets, side-striped jackals, and honey badgers. Many of these are cryptic or nocturnal. Recently, the guides at Karenge Bush Camp, Isaac Mbarushimana and Justus Itangishatse, and the Conservation and Research Manager, Drew Bantlin, have had sightings of several serval cats across Kilala Plain in the north of Akagera. The Conservation and Research Manager and multiple guests have also been lucky to have amazing daytime sightings of side-striped jackals recently around Rwisirabo. Sightings of these smaller carnivores are often rare and fleeting, but a night drive in the south of the park or at Karenge Bush Camp in the north of the park offers great opportunities for sightings. Driving the less-used roads also offer good chances of seeing these smaller predators during the daytime. Our Conservation and Research team continue to set camera traps across the park to understand and improve our understanding of the park’s biodiversity. As a lover of small carnivores and all things small and unique, I have to consider myself very lucky today. With the sun baking down, I decided to make an impromptu visit to a small little collection just off the A10 called @cedarsnaturecentre . At around an acre in size and only £2 to enter, for most Zoo enthusiasts it wouldn't always appeal but my visit was made very worthwhile by Zookeeper Kia who offered me the chance to enter the Zorilla exhibit and see them being fed. The small zoo has a pair of Zorilla named Ziggy & Stardust, and these nocturnal animals are usually difficult to see. As with any nocturnal exhibit, lighting can be difficult for photo's, so whilst these are not top quality by any means, I am pleased to be able to show you these beautiful creatures otherwise known as Striped Polecats. Held in only 3 collections in the whole of Europe, it is hoped that this pair will breed in due course. I had an enjoyable trip to this Zoo, speaking to the keepers about the collection, and they have some exciting developments taking place over the summer, with some nice species to go on show later in the year. Being allowed to see the Zorilla up close and feed was an amazing experience, and whilst they are not my best pictures, they are ones I am pleased to have in my collection. If you plan to visit Paradise Wildlife Park anytime soon, or are around the Waltham Cross area, I would certainly recommend a visit to this little collection. Zorilla can only be seen at @cedarsnaturecentre, @hoozooanddinosaurworld, & @cassioburyfarm. The dwarf mongoose. These cute creatures are the smallest carnivores in Africa. Their diet is consisted of beetle larvae, termites but also bigger stuff such as scorpions, snakes or rodents! They live in old termite mounds and are gregarious: they live in groups of up to 30 individuals. Fun fact, the group is called a business! They have a strict hierarchy within the group, with one male and female alpha pair being in charge. The alpha male will monopolise the breeding within the colony. They have a fun way to determine who will be the dominant being of the colony: they will « fight » in a licking contest and the last one to tolerate it will become the alpha 😜 You will find dwarf mongooses basking on the eastern side of the termite mound in the morning and they will then go out to forage. These mongooses have a mutualistic relationship with hornbills: both species will feed together while being on the lookout and warn each other of potential danger. Birds such as fork-tailed drongos will also follow the colony and will perfectly mimic the alarm call of the mongooses to steal their meal! We’ve had the chance last week to observe some of these guys for a good amount of time! They were being curious and I had the opportunity to take a nice photograph of this really cool moment! Rusty Spotted Cats are locally called as "Namala Pilli" and "Akula Chittadi" by local communities in the North Eastern Ghats region of Andhra Pradesh. They are commonly seen in farmlands and scrub forests at night. Our team sighted them in Oil Palm plantations as well during our night spotlight surveys. We identified hunting for meat by organised gangs as the main threat to their survival in many areas across the region. Our program goal is to mitigate threats and promote conservation in highly human dominated landscapes where the cats seem to be adapting well. The Indian Grey Mongoose (𝑈𝑟𝑣𝑎 𝑒𝑑𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑑𝑠𝑖𝑖) goes by many names including common mongoose and common grey mongoose., named after it's grey fur.⠀This small carnivore is known for its spunk and has been seen taking on large snakes and coming away unscathed.⠀They feed on small rodents, invertebrates, hatchlings and eggs. Grey mongooses, like other mongoose species in India are killed for their fur to make "premium" paint brushes and shaving brushes.⠀This is the biggest threat they face other than habitat degradation.⠀In 2018, the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) seized around 155 kgs of mongoose hair and more than 50,000 brushes.⠀It was estimated that as many as 3,000 mongooses had been killed for this. ^ Grey mongooses are protected under Schedule II (WPA) and CITES Appendix III.
