Spent a few days in San Francisco to see The Magnetic Fields perform 69 Love Songs in full over two nights to celebrate the 25th anniversary of its release. It was as lovely and magical as I expected it to be. We also had a slightly belated celebration of our own 9th wedding anniversary with an incredible dinner at @sonsanddaughterssf with the best table in the house. I loved photographing The Magnetic Fields on Saturday so much when they performed Part 2 of their album, 69 Love Songs, that I really wanted to return to Town Hall this week to catch Part 1. I love the 10” format….some great ep’s have been issued on the odd medium and of course all those old 78’s. When this came out years ago I had the cd but never became intimately familiar with it because there is just so much. Then Merge re-released it as a box set in 2010, 2015 and again in 2022 in various vinyl variants in 3 gatefold sets each holding 2 records handsomely encased in this beautiful box set. The record contains 28 songs that are anywhere in length from 17 seconds to 2 and a half minutes..hence the title. Idea for the album came from lead singer Stephin Merritt’s inspiration from the short fiction of Lydia Davis and his writing of a book of..scrabble poetry (?)..whatever that is. #patriciaclarkson #joyburns #piecesofapril #peterhedges #2003 “i keep waiting for a good time to tell you, but there's really no good time. i need everyone to listen… i don't know how to say this… we need to discuss how each of you, oh god...” “it's ok, sweetie.” “…how each of you is going to handle… discarding food without letting our hostess know.” this movie holds a special place… in 2003, i convinced my mom to drive us to the *art* theatre about an hour away to see this film. our local theatres only showed films for the common folk. we drove all the way to #maplearttheatre (now “the maple theater”?) in bloomfield (fancy/rich people town)… the movie focuses on the family f***-up #katieholmes with a cherry neck tattoo trying to give her mother one last #happythanksgiving before #breastcancer takes its toll (despite their terrible relationship). as the #blacksheep of my own family (secret #gay/ #goth), i could relate to april… however, i have been fortunate to have a great relationship with my parents and don’t have any ink 🍒 at the time (2003), my mother was in good health, but now, 20 years later, she suffers from dementia/alzheimer’s pretty badly. this movie introduced me to #stephinmerritt #themagneticfields @themagfields #69lovesongs #the6ths #waspsnests and patricia clarkson. i felt like she was snubbed at the oscars (sorry zellweger… i know we have the same birthday, but patricia was better imo). her performance in this was everything. most people fly home for christmas. i choose thanksgiving. i love food… and i am grateful for my family. each year, a part of me always wonders if this is going to be my last thanksgiving with my mom. i love this movie. i don’t want to spoil it, but you’ll see… the sense of family, community, and inclusivity is 🥹 if you like this #watercolor, maybe you will like my book #arewehappy? link in bio ☝️🥲
