The House that dripped Blood is one of the seven Amicus anthology stories, featuring a house, four tenants and four terrifying stories of said tenants who died, which are Denholm Elliott, the giants of british horror Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee, and most importantly...JON PERTWEE. Yes, that's right, Doctor Who is a movie star called Paul Henderson who buys a cursed cloak which turns him into a vampire! And Carla, his partner, is played by Ingrid Pitt, amazing actress who also gets to wear said cloak... Please don't mention his clothes. Not only he wears a frilly shirt and velvet coat at some point, HE WEARS A FEDORA AND AN ASCOT. YOU'VE HEARD WELL. A BLOODY FEDORA CROWNING HIS SHADES WHEN GETTING OFF THE CAR. However there seems to be a problem. Aside every other tenant, Pertwee's story is quite funny, and almost nobody likes it. I do like how in Lee's story, his daughter is afraid of fire, which is quite good for her. Fire is dangerous, and it has to be handled responsibly! That house looks scary and fun. An Amicus Production. 🔪 Amicus Films were ‘inspired’ by the classic Ealing anthology Dead Of Night (1945) — and went on to become the undisputed king of portmanteau horror. They released such barnstormers as Dr Terror’s House of Horrors (1965), The House That Dripped Blood (1971), Tales from the Crypt (1972), Asylum (1972) and Vault of Horror (1973) over their 15-year history. The classic portmanteau horror consists of a bunch of (usually angry) people meeting up somewhere, and an anchoring story that doesn’t really make much sense. Terrible tales about the people are told. Then, there’s a ‘surprise’ ending, wherein the — now chastened — angry people find out they’re dead or something. Which means that none of the stories you’ve just listened to about them actually happened. Thus, making the whole film make literally no sense at all. I think I'm going to start showcasing some of my favorite actors/actresses in Horror, from before 1980. And for my first crack at it, why not go with none other than the seemingly immaculate, 𝙄𝙣𝙜𝙧𝙞𝙙 𝙋𝙞𝙩𝙩? She was in way more than just these few films, of course. But these are some of my favorite of hers. Even if she didn't have a GIANT role in The Wicker Man (1973). The Vampire Lovers (1970) though, probably being my absolute favorite of hers. Suave Tom Adams (born March 09, 1938) is remembered by a generation for his role as Daniel Fogarty on the popular TV series, “The Onedin Line”, which turned him into a popular pin-up with housewives up and down the UK. A decade earlier, he’d appeared as Dai “Diversions” Nimmo in the Hollywood adventure epic “The Great Escape” (1963), for United Artists, starring Steve McQueen, James Garner, and Richard Attenborough. • Born Anthony Frederick Charles Adams in Poplar, East London, his father worked as a company chauffeur. After finishing high school, he did his national service in the British Army, then, joined the Unity Theatre, London, taking the stage name ‘Tom Adams’. For a time, between acting jobs, he taught English and drama at the Cardinal Griffin School, in Poplar. • Tom made his West End stage debut in “Masterpiece” (1961) at The Royalty (now Peacock Theatre) opposite Anton Walbrook and Peter Sallis. The following year, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company. • In 1965, he took the lead as Charles Vine in the low budget ‘James Bond’ inspired spy thriller “Licensed to Kill”, which went on to spawn two sequels, “Where the Bullets Fly” (1966) and the 1967 “Somebody’s Stolen Our Russian Spy” (aka “O.K. Inspector Halloway von Scotland Yard stößt bei den Ermittlungen in seinem neuesten Fall auf die seltsame Geschichte eines Hauses. Dessen Mietern widerfahren teils seltsame Dinge und alle enden mit dem Ableben. Meinung: Die britische Filmschmiede Amicus konnte den Hammer Studios insgesamt zwar nie so recht Paroli bieten, hat aber dennoch einige respektable und einige erstklassige Beiträge im Bereich Horror geliefert. So auch mit "Totentanz der Vampire". Die Anthology fährt dabei mit Lee und Cushing zwei schwere Geschütze des britischen Gothic Horrors auf. Natürlich tauchen die beiden nur in zwei Geschichten um die verstorbenen Mieter auf, doch allein ihre Mitwirkung verspricht Genrefans schonmal grundsolide Unterhaltung. Und so kommt es dann auch: schöner, klassischer Gothic Horror mit vier recht unterschiedlichen Geschichten, die mal durch gelungene Wendungen, mal durch Augenzwinkern und mal durch psychedelische Abstecher allesamt gut unterhalten. Das "gotische" Interieur, die satten Farben (die auf der BluRay sehr gut zur Geltung kommen), nebelverhangene Außenaufnahmen, die atmosphärische Musik, dazu erfahrene Mimen und klassischer Grusel - Fans all dessen kommen hier voll auf ihre Kosten, auch wenn die Rahmenhandlung etwas flach bleibt und der Film nie ganz an die Klasse von Hammers oder Amicus' besten Filmen herankommt. Aber allein die letzte Episode ist mit einem tollen Pertwee und den vielen gelungenen Meta-Anspielungen die Sichtung wert. The House That Dripped Blood is an Amicus production from 1970 that features four tales about the previous residents of a cursed house in the country. In the first segment Denholm Elliot plays a horror writer who creates a maniac strangler for his latest book, only for the character to seemingly take on a life of his own. In the second, Peter Cushing is a retired actor whose friend forms an unhealthy obsession with an unsettlingly lifelike waxwork. In the third Christopher Lee is the stern father to a troubled little girl with a dark secret. Finally Jon Pertwee and Ingrid Pitt ham it up wonderfully as actors cast in a cheapo vampire movie. Robert 'Psycho' Bloch wrote the screenplay and script so unsurprisingly this is fantastically good stuff.
