U-534 lay on the sea bed for nearly 41 years, until she was discovered at a depth of 67 meters in 1986 by a Danish wreck hunter, Aage Jensen. Shortly afterwards, the wreck hunters' group contacted Danish media millionaire Karsten Ree, who sponsored raising the submarine, as rumours of gold caused intense media coverage. U534 - Liverpool (Photos Feb 09) - In the early hours of 5 May 45, a partial surrender of German forces in Denmark, Germany and other areas came into effect. U-534's Commander decided to form a convoy with 2 other U-boats and continue sailing north on the surface of the Kattegat sea in an area too shallow for crash diving, when two British RAF Liberator aircraft attacked. The crew managed to shoot one bomber down but the boat received a direct hit by a depth charge. She began to take on water as a result of the damage to her aft section by the engine rooms (Picture 3), and sank. The shot-down Liberator crashed 3nm away, and all on board the plane were lost. U-534 had a crew of 52 men; all escaped the sub, 49 survived to be rescued. Five were trapped in the torpedo room as she began to sink, but they managed to escape through the torpedo loading hatch once the boat had settled on the sea bed. One of them failed to exhale as he was surfacing and died from damage to his lungs. Two others died of exposure while in the water. U534 never sank any shipping in 3 patrols. She lay on the sea bed for nearly 41 years, until she was discovered at a depth of 220ft in 1986. Rumours of Nazi gold caused intense media coverage and she was raised to the surface on 23 Aug 93. Transported to Birkenhead in 1996, the vessel formed part of the Warship Preservation Trust's collection at Birkenhead Docks until the museum closed on 5 Feb 06. On 27 Jun 07, the Merseytravel transit authority acquired U534 to display at the Woodside Ferry Terminal. The vessel was cut into sections and is now displayed in sectioned form to allow visitors better visibility without entering the U-boat. Engineers began a month-long operation to divide U-534, using a diamond wire cutter, on 6 Feb 08. The U-boat Story exhibition opened on 10 Feb 09. Amazingly, U-534's gramophone records are making music again after half a century under the sea! We knew some were in decent condition but it seemed impossible to imagine the delicate grooves surviving 48 years of silt, rust, cold and the sheer weight of water 8x higher than normal air pressure. Our team spent time carefully cleaning a few of the least damaged shellac discs, before testing them out on vintage turntables and gramophones. The results were better than anyone could have hoped for. Petty officer Heinz Barthelt must have been disappointed when this message was sent... "FDU-West Command made a mistake when issuing the award certificates. A certificate of possession for the Iron Cross, 1st class, was incorrectly issued for Maschinen-Maat Barthelt, Heinz. It is requested that a new Iron Cross 2nd Class award certificate for the above-mentioned soldier be forwarded here." The Iron Cross was a military award for bravery or valuable action, though they were relatively common - several million second-class crosses were awarded. The 1st Class award was less common and could only be awarded to someone who already held the 2nd - so of course, Maschinenmaat Barthelt would have known it was a mistake immediately. A number of Iron Crosses were recovered aboard U-534, in varying states of preservation. Amongst the endless crates of well-preserved relics, there's a cardboard box labelled 'scrap paper'. Must be thousands of sheets of blank paper in there... ...except it turns out, they're not blank at all! The ink has faded, but if you look closely there's still writing on the majority of them. For example, this page picked at random appears to have a bunch of calculations/data on it, written on graph paper, but we can't really decipher the handwriting. We have no idea whether we'd ever have the time or ability to decipher these papers. A very very warm welcome to our new friends from Marinekameradschaft Freundeskreis U 995, who made the long journey from northern Germany especially to visit us. Paul-Patrick Schröder is chairman of the U-995 Technical Museum in Kiel, the world's only surviving Type VII U-boat. He's also an executive officer in an attack submarine squadron, so he has first-hand experience of the sights, smells and popped ears aboard a diesel-electric sub! He was joined by Katie Lehni Nilsson, a marine archaeologist with a special interest in U-boats, who was very excited by the remarkably well-preserved condition of U-534. Not only were they great company and full of interesting insights...they also baked us a bunch of submarine-shaped cookies! These are the kinds of allies we need... 😁 The U-995 museum has a exceptionally knowledgeable and enthusiastic membership so we're excited to work with them and assist each other however we can. Exciting news; the thick glass windows of the Diesel section have been removed, so tomorrow's visitors will get an amazing new view inside the boat. It's really quite staggering how much more real and 3-dimensional it looks without the glass in the way. Our team have been working really hard to prepare the site for the open day; I had a look at some of the artefacts Paige has picked out and I think you're going to be blown away. How cute is our little battlefleet? These little recognition 'spotter' models - made of lead or plastic - were found onboard U-534 and have survived decades under the sea remarkably well. The big guy in the middle is HMS Furious, a Battlecruiser converted into an aircraft carrier during construction. The smallest ones are LCF and LCT landing craft, famously used during D-Day. In fact, the only surviving D-Day landing craft, LCT7074, was U-534's next door neighbour in the former Wallasey museum! We had a nice little break for the Easter weekend; if you celebrated it too, we hope you had a good one. A typical IXC boat might carry upwards of 250kg of fresh eggs (!!) for a war patrol, but any that were aboard U-534 are long gone. However, these curious little wooden rabbits were found onboard! They're owned by the Dunkirk 1940 Museum (@dunkirk1940) who acquired several items from U-534 as part of their huge collection. They're based down in Fort Luton, a Victorian fortress, and focus especially on Operation Dynamo, the famous evacuation of forces from Dunkirk. I'd presume these little rabbits were carved by a crewman out of scrap wood as a keepsake, much like the wheeled dog toy in our collection. HMS Queen Elizabeth, flagship of the Royal Navy. What a ship! The supercarrier visited Liverpool this weekend, and through our ties with the Navy we were invited on board to represent Western Approaches HQ and the U-534 project. Our friend Drachinifel joined us for the evening reception and presented the Captain with a hand-built model of the 1913 battleship HMS Queen Elizabeth. We also loaned the Navy our photographer for the day! And of course in exchange, crew members were welcomed into our Western Approaches museum for a free tour. The 65,000-ton carrier is so spacious that you could likely fit around THIRTY type IXC U-boats on the flight deck, and probably another 6-8 inside in the hangar deck (if you cut off some of the conning towers). Absolutely bonkers. A bird's eye view of U-534 and the surrounding area. You can clearly see the way she's been cut into four sections. Notice the little pointy black thing in the top right corner? That's another historic submarine - a replica of the Resurgam II, a pioneering steam-powered Victorian submarine built in 1879. The original sank during trials off the North Wales coast, though the 3 crew escaped to safety. The replica was built in the 90s at nearby Cammell Laird, one of the major UK shipbuilders. They played a major part in the Battle Of The Atlantic and we hope to tell their story in future exhibits. This plucky little egg-shaped submersible was built to serve as a weapon of war, just like U-534. But the aerial photo shows how Resurgam is utterly dwarfed by the menacing steel u-boat. And yet, don't forget that U-534 is itself tiny compared to today's subs - the largest Typhoon-class missile boat is well over 20x heavier, 4x faster, 4x faster, 4x wider, 3x longer and with 3x more crew than the IXC/40! Nearly half a century under the sea and this 20mm Flak 38 cannon looks like it could still fire! This is one of the spare guns carried inside the boat - the ones mounted on the bridge during the sinking are far more rusty. U-534 had an unusually high success rate with anti-air defence. After nearly 50 years at the bottom of the sea, this Mauser model 1914 is still in great condition. The mechanisms are seized up of course, but it still looks dangerous - you wouldn't want to go waving it around in the local post office. A u-boat would have carried a number of pistols, alongside several rifles, submachine guns, and often a machine gun. However this arsenal was mostly for guarding the boat in port - things would have to get very dire indeed for them to be needed at sea! Throwback to the wreck of the German Submarine U-534, painted and being prepared, before it was cut into sections to become part of the exhibit at Merseyside Museum Woodside Ferry Terminal, Wirral. The U-boat was sunk in a Norwegian fjord by the crew of the “G” For George, a Liberator bomber of the RAF’s 547 Squadron. The vessel is believed to be the last U-boat to make an attempt to escape the Allies at the end of the war and is one of the last surviving German U-boats. Legend has it that the vessel contained a valuable cargo of contraband gold bullion, or possibly even a sacred relic known as the Spear of Destiny. The sub was however found to be carrying an enigma cypher machine. The Liberator dropped 10 depth charges on the sub during two attacks and one charge is said to have stuck to the upper part of its hull before exploding. U-534 in Birkenhead has been closed since the first lockdown. She now has new owners and with new funding she will receive a roof to cover the boat from the elements. Also the exhibition area will be extended to house more items that have not been on public view for a long time and some that have not been on display before. U-534, combat history…. On 11 August 1944 Type IXC U-Boat U-534 was attacked by an aircraft but escaped undamaged. Two days later she, along with the U-857 and U-437, was attacked by two Halifax bombers. The aircraft suffered heavy flak damage, and the U-534 arrived safely at Bordeaux, where she was fitted with a Schnorchel. On the second patrol, from 25 August 1944 to 24 October, the boat had to escape the Allied blockade of Lorient in France get back to a friendly port. On 25 August the U-534 left Bordeaux and the new Schnorchel was used for the first time. Exhaust gases leaked into the boat and several crew members collapsed. Surfacing for air, she was spotted and attacked by a Wellington bomber, which her gunners shot down on 27 August. On 28 October, she arrived in Kiel where she was transferred to the 33rd U-boat Flotilla and underwent an extensive refit in Stettin, which put her out of duty until 1 May 1945. On 5 May 1945, U-534 was attacked in the Kattegat by two British RAF Liberator aircraft. The crew managed to shoot one bomber down, and nine depth charges from the bombing runs missed, but then the boat received a direct hit by a depth charge. The U-534 began to take on water as a result of the damage to her aft section by the engine rooms, and sank north-east of Anholt. The shot-down Liberator crashed and all on board the plane were lost. The U-534 had aboard a crew of 52 men; all escaped the sub, and 49 survived to be rescued. German submarine U-534 is a Type IXC/40 U-boat of Germany's Kriegsmarine built for service during World War II. She was built in 1942 in Hamburg-Finkenwerder by Deutsche Werft AG as yard number 352. She was launched on 23 September 1942 and commissioned on 23 December with Oberleutnant zur See Herbert Nollau in command. The U-534 is one of only four German World War II submarines in preserved condition remaining in the world, another being the IXC boat U-505 in Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. U-534 was used mainly for training duties, and during her service she sank no other ships. A Royal Air Force bomber sank her on 5 May 1945 in the Kattegat 20 kilometres northeast of the Danish island of Anholt. U-534 was salvaged in 1993 and since February 2009 has been on display in Birkenhead, England, as part of the U-boat Story. The U-534 carried the rare Twin 3.7 cm Flakzwilling M43U on the DLM42 mount. This was one of the best AA weapons of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine. The DLM42 mount was used mainly on the Type IX as it was too heavy for the Type VII U-boats.
