BBMF Spitfire MK356 was part of a batch of Mk IX Spitfires built at the Castle Bromwich factory in early 1944. It took part in the D-Day operations and one of its pilots, Flying Officer Gordon Ockenden RCAF, claimed a shared confirmed kill against a German Me Bf109 on 7th June, D-Day+1. On this day, 26th April 1944…. Norman Cyril Jackson, a Sgt Flight Engineer with 106 Squadron, took off in his Lancaster bomber from RAF Metheringham for a raid on Schweinfurt, Germany. After successfully dropping their bombs their aircraft was attacked by a German fighter at 20,000ft. A fire started near a petrol tank on the upper surface of the starboard wing, between the fuselage and the inner engine. Pushing a hand fire-extinguisher into the top of his life-saving jacket and clipping on his parachute pack, Sergeant Jackson jettisoned the escape hatch above the pilot’s head. He then started to climb out of the cockpit and back along the top of the fuselage to the starboard wing. Before he could leave the fuselage his parachute pack opened and the whole canopy and rigging lines spilled into the cockpit. By this time, the fire had spread rapidly and Sergeant Jackson was involved. His face, hands and clothing were severely burnt. Unable to retain his hold he was swept through the flames and over the trailing edge of the wing, dragging his parachute behind. When last seen it was only partly inflated and was burning in a number of places. He landed heavily and sustained a broken ankle, his right eye was closed through burns and his hands were useless. He was eventually captured and became a Prisoner of War. PZ865 is a single-engined WW2 Hawker Hurricane fighter operated by the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. It was the last of 14,533 Hurricanes produced and is now flown as an airborne memorial. In its all-black night-fighter colours, representing Hurricane Mk IIC BE634 ‘ZY-V’, BBMF Hurricane PZ865 commemorates all those Hurricane pilots of the night-fighter squadrons who risked their lives in the dark hours, bravely and stoically trying to defend against night bombing raids, and then taking the fight to the enemy on night-intruder operations. It's #WorldWarWednesday! Today we're looking at the history of ice cream and the Navy. I've been getting a lot of calls for information about ice cream lately, and that has sent me down a rabbit hole. I did a whole talk on the history of ice cream last year, but while I knew ice cream was a big tradition in naval history, I didn't know the connection to the First World War. I don't usually cover the history of military consumption of food during the World Wars, but this topic was just too much fun to resist. Ice cream wasn't always the Navy's treat of choice. For over a hundred years rum was the preferred ration by many sailors. But in the late 19th century the Temperance movement began to have increasing power over society. By 1919 we had a Constitutional Amendment (the 19th - often known just as "Prohibition"). But the armed forces went dry much earlier. In particular, on July 1, 1914, the U.S. Navy went alcohol-free. At the same time, naval vessels (especially hospital ships) were being stocked with ice cream... On this day in 1800, the U.S. Congress established its own legislative library - the Library of Congress (LOC). President John Adams approved spending $5,000 “for the purchase of such books as may be necessary for the use of Congress.” Beginning in 1870, copyright law required that the Library of Congress receive copies of all new materials. In 2012, Charles Novacek’s memoir, Border Crossings: Coming of Age in the Czech Resistance became a part of the LOC collection and in 2021, Charles’s Bridge my picture book based on actual events in Charles’s life on the brink of World War II also became a part of the LOC collection with its over 170 million items. Pictured here is a favorite art work in the LOC that speaks to a theme in Charles’s and my books. The intricate mosaic, “Minerva of Peace”, created by the American artist Elihu Vedder in 1897 greets visitors on their way to the Main Reading Room Visitor’s Gallery. Thomas Jefferson Building, Washington, D.C. Minerva is the Roman goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare, justice, law, and victory. Ironically, according to the artist who created her, the peace and prosperity that she enjoys was attained only through warfare. The goddess holds a long, two-headed spear, showing that she never relaxes her vigilance against the enemies of the country she protects. ANZAC Day - a day when we stop to commemorate all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in war, my grandfathers included. I am extremely lucky to have known my grandfathers and learned small snippets about their time spent in Egypt during the war (although neither enjoyed talking about it), but others are not so fortunate ♥️ In my twenties, I had the honour of travelling to Gallipoli, sleeping under the stars near ANZAC cove and attending the dawn service with thousands of Aussies and Kiwis to commemorate ANZAC Day - it was an experience I’ll never forget. Visiting the trenches soldiers once fought and died in, browsing name plaques at various memorial sites and standing shoulder to shoulder with others who had relatives serve in the war, was a sobering experience. When I think about that now, I can’t help but be reminded of how very lucky we are to live in such free and peaceful countries. Today we pause to remember all those who served in war, especially those who never made it home again. Lest we forget ♥️

This week, a Happy Birthday to Margaret Kennedy who was born on 23rd April 1896. A productive author and playwright she achieved celebrity status in the 1920s with the publication, when she was 28, of her novel The Constant Nymph. A story of doomed love, the book became a major bestseller and inspired film and stage versions starring Noel Coward, John Gielgud and Ivor Novello. But it was her Second World War memoir Where Stands a Wingèd Sentry that caught Handheld’s attention and we were delighted to publish it, for the first time EVER in the UK, in 2021. (It had been previously published in America by Yale University Press in 1941.) Where Stands A Wingèd Sentry is a remarkably evocative first-hand account of the tense months between Dunkirk and the start of the Blitz, written at a time when the prospect of invasion was all too real and the eventual outcome of the war unknown. With her husband David called to London on war work, Margaret takes her three young children to Cornwall, knowing the worst is to come without knowing what the worst will be. Fanta, the drink that was created during the Second World War in 1940, in Essen, Germany, when Coca-Cola Deutschland could no longer obtain the right ingredients for Coca-Cola. This was a result of the Allied lockdown. As a result, 43 factories of the popular drink in Germany were unable to receive the secret ingredient used to make Coca-Cola. That is why a replacement soft drink had to be made according to a new recipe. A drink which the Germans eventually loved, and many later saw as their own. . Max Keith, head of Coca-Cola Deutschland, had the idea to make Fanta. A very cheap product that would be made with "the leftovers from the leftovers that nobody wanted", i.e. wasted ingredients like apple cider or whey milk. The name was coined in a brainstorming session as a shortened form of the German word 'Fantasie'. The result was successful. Since contact with the Coca-Cola headquarters in Atlanta was impossible, Fanta had therefore developed Fanta without permission or consultation. In 1941, Fanta was registered as a German brand. . In 1943 alone, three million bottles were sold in Germany. Fanta's reign during the World War II ended as soon as the war ended. Coca-Cola, the parent company, regained control of the German factories and their products, including Fanta, whose production claimed they were not being closely linked to the NS. Fanta disappeared for a few years until 1955, when Coca-Cola would resurrect the brand and 'wash its face' to compete with the new line of drinks that Pepsi released in the 1950s. . All post-war soft drinks that were released under the Fanta brand name, no longer have anything to do with these original wartime variants. .
