🌊 Ahiṃsā is such a powerful Yama to weave into your way of life. ☮️ Ahiṃsā is often translated to mean 'Do no harm' in its simplicity. 🧘🏼‍♂️ In the late 90s and early 2000s- many of my yoga teachers (in the Western studio spaces I practiced in) were teaching Ahiṃsā to mean being a vegetarian. 🧘🏼‍♂️ In the 2010s- I started to speak about the Yamas & Niyamas at teacher trainings in yoga studios to address the many mistranslations, misunderstandings, and flat out inaccuracies of what is being taught by yoga teachers and then understood by yoga students. 📚 Misteachings are a form of Hiṃsā (हिंसा). They perpetuate wrong knowledge and lead students in the wrong direction; away from Satya (सत्य). 🕉 To whittle down a massive principle, Yama and central practice of Yoga like Ahiṃsā to mean something one-dimensional such as a Vegetarianism/Veganism marketing agenda is unethical and an excellent example of what whitewashing in yoga looks like in practice. 🇮🇳 In the Indian diaspora we have people who eat meat and those who don't- both practice yoga. Historically, these personal choices and family practices are a result of bigger social constructs within our culture like caste, geography, religion, etc. 🫶🏾 To be a yoga practitioner does not require you to force yourself into boxes that Western modern society has chosen for you. #urdhvamukhapaschimottanasana! This pose helps my back so much. I’m consciously drawing my thigh bones into the hips and pressing the thigh flesh to the bone. I’m turning the inner thighs up and mindfully spreading the back upper thighs.
