On March 17, 1925, the Mulholland Dam opened to the public with a dedication ceremony celebrating “one of the most spectacular construction projects in the West.” St. Patrick’s Day was chosen as a nod to Irish immigrant William Mulholland, chief engineer of the water bureau. At 2 p.m., the festivities began with Mayor George E. Cryer turning the gate valves to release the waters of the reservoir into the city’s distributing system. Two bronze plaques were unveiled by Arabelle Hurlbut, great-granddaughter of the pioneer who planted the first oranges in Southern California, William Wolfskill. Mulholland addressed the crowd of 500 (including canine actor Strongheart) to say he was proud of his creation, even if associates had mocked it as “an old woman’s apron—an object of utility, but not of beauty.” Built into Weid Canyon, the Mulholland Dam is made of 172,300 cubic feet of concrete and can hold 2.5 billion gallons of water. As it is perched 200 feet over a residential community, safety was of utmost concern: The dam’s base is 160 feet thick and its design is arched like a bow upstream—so even if the reservoir was filled with molten lead the wall could withstand the pressure. All the same, after Mulholland’s St. Francis Dam in Santa Clarita burst in 1928, killing 450 people, the Hollywood dam was retroactively reinforced with tons of earth on the downstream side, which was then landscaped (slides 9-10). Across the crest, which stretches 975 feet between canyon walls, the water bureau constructed a pedestrian walk with balustraded sidewalks. Ninety-nine years later, the 3.3-mile path around the reservoir’s perimeter remains an urban oasis. The dam’s dedication inspired local poet Bertha Fitch, who wrote: Just where her circling hills unfold in lines of living green... Our royal city of the silver screen Has placed a noble crown upon her brow And sits in majesty enthroned now… We greet thee—Emperor enchained in service true! Once where the sagebrush and black wolf reigned… All hail! Oh, sheet of water clear and good. We greet thee! Beautiful Lake of Hollywood!

Yesterday marked the 96th anniversary the United States’ worst civil engineering disaster of the 20th century: the collapse of St. Francis Dam in St. Francisquito Canyon, located near present-day Castaic and Santa Clarita. Rare glass plate negatives from the UCLA Library’s Digital Collections showcase the aftermath, including the impacts upon the surrounding landscape and families within the area. While structural and geological issues resulted in the dam’s collapse — which unleashed vast amounts of water throughout the canyon’s adjacent areas, killing over 450 people — the social and political forces pushing for Los Angeles’ rapid expansion add underlying context. The Los Angeles Aqueduct & the Destruction of Owens Valley The opening of the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913 was a watershed moment in the history of the city and marked a turning point in the way water was managed and distributed in Southern California. At the helm of this ambitious project was William Mulholland, a visionary civil engineer whose vision would dramatically transform Los Angeles. Los Angeles, in the early 20th century, was experiencing rapid growth, and its future was inextricably linked to securing a stable water supply. The Owens Valley, situated over 200 miles to the north, was the chosen source of water. However, obtaining water from this distant region came at a steep cost to the Paiute Native Americans, who had lived there for centuries. Their way of life was disrupted, and the valley's landscape forever altered by the diversion of the Owens River. The LA Aqueduct fundamentally changed the trajectory of Los Angeles, enabling its remarkable growth and urban development. Still, it came with environmental and ethical consequences, underscoring the complex relationship between water, power, and the landscape in the American West. #LosAngeles Aqueduct #LosAngeles #SouthernCalifornia #WilliamMulholland #California #Water #Paiute #OwensValley #NativeAmericanHistory

Mulholland: Master Architect, St. Francis Dam: Tragic Failure . Discover the brilliance of architect William Mulholland, creator of the Hollywood Dam. Pictured here you can see the dam as it was originally built, and also with the dirt that was added to the front to prevent collapse similar to what happened at the Saint Francis dam, also built by Mulholland. Explore the fateful history of the St. Francis Dam's catastrophic collapse as you scroll thru the photos. Marvel at the Hollywood Dam, a testament to Mulholland's visionary design and engineering expertise. The first two images showed the dam, as it was first built with a beautiful art deco curves, and a stepped façade . Reflect on the devastating collapse of the St. Francis Dam, a somber event that reshaped dam engineering practices. Images of this dam, a sister to the newly built dam above Hollywood is pictured as the face began to leak, followed by an image after the total collapse and failure. Without these risks taken, we never would have had a city here as we know it, this structure is a testament to Mulholland's legacy. We must learn from the lessons of the St. Francis Dam. #HollywoodDam #WilliamMulholland #StFrancisDam . . . . . . . . #Hollywood #History #Architecture #Legacy #LessonsLearned

I went on a walking tour of Belfast recently and one of the stops was this beautiful terrace of three houses on Donegall Street (Nos. 201-205). They’ve caught my eye many times before but this was the first time I had the opportunity to look at them up close. Built around 1820 for the rising mercantile and professional classes of Belfast, they are amongst the oldest surviving buildings in the city. They once formed part of a terrace of eight similar houses however Nos. 207-215 were demolished for road-widening purposes in 1990. Thankfully, these houses did not suffer the same fate. Instead, they were acquired by Hearth Historic Buildings Trust and restored between 1991 and 1993. In 2019, the Ulster History Circle unveiled a blue plaque at No. 201 in memory of William Mulholland (1855-1935), who was born and baptised in the parish. He went on to design the Los Angeles Aqueduct, which opened in 1913. In Los Angeles, Mulholland Dam in the Hollywood Hills, Mulholland Drive, Mulholland Highway and Mulholland Middle School are named after him. Mulholland retired in 1928 following the St. Francis Dam disaster, which killed hundreds and swept away thousands of acres of fertile land. #belfast #belfastcity #belfasthistory #northernireland #donegallstreet #georgianarchitecture #architecture #williammulholland #mulhollanddrive #mulhollanddam #hollywoodhills #losangeles #losangeleshistory #historicalwalkingtour #historicalwalks

This pick for #weeklywormwednesday takes us into California's eastern Sierra Nevada, a landscape that, like the Colorado Plateau, has been shaped both by the presence and absence of water. "Miracle Country" is a powerful memoir of family and place by Kendra Atleework, winner of the #ellenmeloydesertwritersaward. 🐛 Kendra grew up in the Owens Valley near Bishop, California. Her story flows from her family's relationship with the land, through the turmoil of loosing her mother at age 16, to leaving the place and finally returning. Woven throughout are stories of the Paiutes who were forcibly removed from the valley and William Mulholland's infamous diversion of the Owens River to quench Los Angeles' growing thirst. Drawing from the work of writers Mary Austin and Rebecca Solnit, Kendra's prose is deeply personal and, like the mountains she calls home, strong, sharp, and beautiful. Brought to you by @susanmtraveler Link in bio to purchase from @algonquinbooks

MULHOLLAND DRIVE (Los Angeles Citywide) William Mulholland (1855-1935) was the embodiment of L.A.’s complicated relationship with water. Born in Belfast, Mulholland left home at 15 and took odd jobs around the U.S. before settling in Los Angeles in 1877. Here he worked his way up from ditch cleaner to water company manager. In 1902, the City formed the Water Department – forerunner to the DWP – and crowned Mulholland superintendent. His greatest triumph was the Los Angeles Aqueduct, which brought water from the Owens Valley in the Eastern Sierra down to the San Fernando Valley. When the project was completed in 1913, Mulholland famously said of the water: “There it is. Take it.” (Owens Valley farmers were displeased, to say the least, while some Angelenos were rightly skeptical as to why the aqueduct led to arid SFV land owned by a handful of millionaires instead of closer to town.) He also “built” Lake Hollywood in 1924-1925 by flooding Weid Canyon with the Mulholland Dam. His career ended on March 12th, 1928, when the St. Francis Dam north of Santa Clarita failed just twelve hours after he inspected it. 15 billion gallons of water smashed into the valley below, forming a deadly river two miles wide and 70 miles long, all the way out to the Pacific. More than 450 people were killed. Mulholland Drive was laid out in 1922, when things were still going swell for its namesake. #mulhollanddrive #williammulholland

"If literature is no instruction manual, it is, instead, a reckoning. After enough subtle shifts, I cannot abide the furniture as it once was. It crowded the room; how did it take me so long to see? When I reckon with the past, I keep coming back to Mulholland." Kendra Atleework, the author of Miracle Country: A Memoir of a Family and a Landscape, reckons with the legacy of William Mulholland, known by some as the father of Los Angeles, who oversaw construction of the Los Angeles Aqueduct. This essay is part of a project supported by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation (@mellonfdn) titled, “How Should Societies Remember Their Sins?”

The Owens Valley is a beautiful valley running N-S near the eastern edge of California. That this ugly sign posted by those that stole the water long ago, exhorts us to not discharge sewage, rubbish or waste is but one of many ironies depicted. Were the water not stolen, surely this wild place would now look like one of hundreds of concrete paved strip-malls across the state. The views west of the Sierra crest and to the east of the Inyos perfectly frame this rugged, remote and rich landscape. When the mood strikes, grab a beverage and search out some of the following to better understand the complicated place that is California. #cadillacdesert #williammulholland #longvalley #chinatownmovie #romanpolanski #jacknicholson #charlesmanson #sharontate #samanthageimer #normanclyde #water #waterwars #salmonneedwater #damndams #owensriver #deathvalley

The Hollywood Reservoir/ Mulholland Dam is my favorite place in LA. Forgive me, this is so terribly sentimental and there’s so much *actual* history there to discuss, but today was the first time in a long time I walked the paved loop, reflecting on my own history with this piece of tranquility. I used to walk there with someone I loved who isn’t here anymore. And after that, I would walk it compulsively because it was the only place I could find solace. It’s funny, the dam and the sign, even the hastily planted reinforcement/reassurance forest...they’re all man made, and yet just as beautiful and awe inspiring as natural wonders. Such a perfect oasis in the hills, true love.

In 1928, the St. Francis Dam broke at 3 minutes to midnight on March 13th. Without warning, the water killed over 400 people and destroyed 1200 homes. The water finally found the ocean 5 1/2 hours later. Bodies were found as far as San Diego. It was the 2nd largest disaster in California history. #stfrancisdamdisaster #santapaula #williammulholland

Land locked Tufas. Formed under water but exposed by the diversion of water destined for Los Angeles some 350 miles away... Taken with a Hasselblad 500CM, expired color film, converted to black and white. . . #owensvalley #easternsierras #monolake #waterwar #waterwars #tufa #landlocked #highanddry #laaquaduct #williammulholland #chinatownthemovie #ladwp #visitmonolake #monocounty #monocountytourism #highway395

Los Angeles aqueduct rolling through the Owens Valley. The aqueduct was built in the early 20th century to slake the thirst of the rapidly growing city of Los Angeles. Los Angeles Department of water and power chief William Mulholland and Fred Eaton used dubious means to acquire land up the valley to bring the water of the high Sierras down to the city. . . . . . #OwensValley #WilliamMulholland #LosAngeles #California #owensriver #River #aerial #aerialart #infrastructure #water #thewest #westernwater #water #highsierras #easternsierras #CaliforniaAqueduct #Infrastructure #Science #CaliforniaScience #hwy395sierras #hwy395roadtrip #losangeles #la @visitcalifornia @visitbishop @visitmammoth

I wish they could have been on this bike… A piece of Harley-Davidson history: Minutes before midnight March 12th, 1928; the St. Francis Dam collapsed releasing a 100-ft. wall of water, destroying everything in its path, from Saugus to the Pacific. “The Warning” monument, in Santa Paula, depicts police officers, Thornton Edwards and Stanley Baker. Baker, riding a Harley-Davidson, and Edwards, on an Indian motorcycle, alerted sleeping citizens of the impending disaster. Their heroic efforts saved hundreds of lives as a 30-ft. wall of water swept through Santa Paula, at 3:05 AM. For the average passer by; this monument is interesting. For Harley-Davidson riders; this monument marks one of Harley-Davidson’s most heroic moments. From Bartels'; Santa Paula’s a nice ride, and a great stop heading to Ojai, Ventura, or Santa Barbara. Go see “The Warning” for yourself. . . . . #bartels #bartelsharleydavidson #bartelshd #bartelsharley #losangeleshistory #venturacounty #santapaula #santapaulapolice #motorofficer #stfrancisdam #williammulholland #santaclaravalley #santaclarariver

Southern California guilty pleasure. Rinsing. Dusty Aspidistra and dirty cobble. The #syringavulgaris is destined for the mountains. See how I watered the #abeliagrandiflora over the #puya?
