I’ve seen a lot of Dan Boeckner over the years, so with the man finally putting out a solo record under his own name today - well, a mononym of his own name, Boeckner - let me dust some of them off. Chronologically, we’ve got the Handsome Furs opening up for Arcade Fire at Massey Hall in May 2007 - if you infer from the angle of the pic that I was up in the nosebleeds with a smuggled-in long lens, you would be correct - and then a much more up-close shot from Wolf Parade’s headlining set at Kingston’s Wolfe Island Music Fest that same August. It was Handsome Furs time again during SXSW 2009 at Austin’s Club DeVille, and then Wolf Parade again playing Pitchfork Fest in Chicago in July 2010. Grabbed this one along with a few others in today's stack that fall near the end of my collection alphabetically, a fine place to spend some time. While it was spinning I was curious to see what other records came out in 2005, a hazily-remembered period in which I had two children aged 3 and under. There were some terrific ones - definitely more than I could recall offhand. But this is a great LP, seemingly paying tribute to new wave and indie rock forbearers while being distinctly its own thing. And even if I can never tell who is responsible for what in this band without checking the liner notes, clearly they benefitted from having two great songwriters. It is most definitely hitting my indie pleasure center right about now. Intenso, gioviale ma comunque sanguinario e sofferente. Echi bowiani e ambienti di pura new wave romantica, ma giocata con il cuor leggero di chi sa di averci messo tutta l’anima.
