Hurry up and slow down sounds like a comical contradiction, but stick with me on this one. Have you ever told yourself, “I’ll take a break after…” or “I’ll feel better after…” We keep pushing until we hit the end of ourselves, and it often feels like running into a brick wall, am I right? We get to a point where we feel like we are too busy to slow down. We might reason, “There already isn’t enough time in a day, I can’t slow down now.” I’m not going to lie to you and say you don’t have a lot of stuff going on in your life right now. Some of it was planned, some of it caught you completely by surprise. The truth is, we aren’t going to overcome it on our own running off fumes. It is important that we carve time into our schedule to pause, rest, refill our cup. You’ve heard it before, you can’t pour out if you have nothing to pour. Further, we can get to the point where we are “too busy” to take a moment to talk with God, or stop long enough to sit down and pick up our Bible. Now wonder we are feeling so sick and tired. We’ve lost sight. We just keep running on that hamster wheel. The problem is we aren’t going anywhere any faster. Hurry up and finally choose to slow down, friend. Stop running for a second to talk to God. He knows what you need before you even ask it, but he wants to spend time with you like a Good Father and a best friend. Talk to him about the stuff that keeps you running. Do you ever feel like you’ve reached your max? You wish you had more: More energy, more patience, more joy, more wisdom, more peace. The good news is that the story isn’t over when we get to the end of ourselves. When we feel depleted or lacking, we have access to a source that never runs out. Time and time again, I remind myself, "Jesus, you are enough. I'm sorry I forgot that foundational truth." He has more than enough for every single area of my life. "The Lord is my Shepherd, I lack nothing." (Psalm 23) The truth is, on my own, I don't always have enough energy, patience, joy, etc. But with Jesus, I have more than enough, because his power is made perfect in my weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). So I come to him with open, empty hands. I come with confidence and expectation to receive, because he always gives me what I need (and abundantly). There is no lack in him. Must be tired of all that waiting, come rest your head on my shoulder. I’ll hug you tightly, tight enough for your problems to numb out for a while. I know it’s frustrating, to do everything and still not get anywhere. I know it’s tiring to wake up everyday and live the same day again and again but it’ll pass. I know you feel nothing is changing but hey, you are trying and that matters a lot than a change. Who knows? Things may be changing but you are too invested in the outcome that you are forgetting to appreciate yourself trying in the process. I know it’s not good today and probably won’t be tomorrow but in the near future, it’ll happen. Whatever you want and are struggling for, will happen.
