An eventful day with friends!! We had a sci-fi costume contest at the @oklahomawriters conference in which I was one of the judges. Ines Johnson was our keynote speaker at the OWFI famous authors banquet and she was witty and fabulous. I bought a book from @author.andrewekaufman and John Pierson and autographed a few as well. The highlights were the facebook lives on my @quillhawkpublishing page with @katrinaeditorial , H.B. Berlow, Brian Johnson, Mark McCraw, and Mike Swain. Writers are an amazing group of people! It’s that time again for the annual @oklahomawriters conference and so far, I’ve spent my days feeding literary agent Steven Hutson (who flew in from LA) and learning so much about science and space with the one and only, @malorie.cooper Oh, and I treated myself to a 2-hr massage prior to the masterclass today. His short story collection #TellEveryoneISaidHi (University of Iowa Press) is an excellent display of the possibilities of form. #ChadSimpson is the author of Tell Everyone I Said Hi, which won the John Simmons Short Fiction Award and was published by the University of Iowa Press. His work has appeared in many print and online publications, including McSweeney’s Quarterly, Esquire, American Short Fiction, No Tokens, The Sun, and New Stories from the Midwest. He has received scholarships from the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and the Sewanee Writers’ Conference, as well as a fellowship from the Illinois Arts Council. She began writing after realizing she loved the stories behind her research as much as collecting the data. She's written thirteen books including memoir, nature writing, kids, and travel. Sarah (the biblical matriarch who is the subject of my poetry) and I will be packing up and heading to North Carolina for a week this summer to participate in the Yetzirah Jewish Poetry Conference. I am honored and delighted to have been among the 35 poets chosen to participate in this year’s conference cohort. Being part of the conference will provide invaluable time and space for me to dive into my love of literature, explore craft, and delight in one of the most important elements in a writer’s life: being part of a community of supportive peers. Especially in a time of so much complexity and controversy, I am grateful for spaces like the ones that Yetzirah creates to celebrate the beauty of Jewish wisdom traditions, poetry and writing together. His memoir, #BeNotAfraidOfMyBody is a genre-bending masterclass in itself. #DariusStewart is the author of Intimacies in Borrowed Light (EastOver Press 2022) and Be Not Afraid of My Body: A Lyrical Memoir (Belt Publishing 2024). His poetry and creative nonfiction appear or are forthcoming in The Arkansas International, Brink, The Brooklyn Review, Callaloo, Cimarron Review, Fourth Genre, Gargoyle, Meridian, The Potomac Review, Salamander, storySouth, Verse Daily, and others. Darius received an MFA in poetry from the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas at Austin (2007) and an MFA from the Nonfiction Writing Program at the University of Iowa (2020). In 2021, the East Tennessee Writers Hall of Fame honored him with the inaugural Emerging Writer Award. He is currently a Lulu “Merle” Johnson Doctoral Fellow in English at the University of Iowa. Making myself cozy in my hotel. I’ve arrived in Seattle a day early for the Northwest Christian Writers conference. Drizzle, traffic and gray skies BUT there are interesting international travelers, a Barns & Noble nearby, and I got some of my favorite magazines! Where I live we rarely have any of these things! The traffic is boggling but I loved the check-in. Wheaton houses rich literary history, and we wanted to highlight several places, both on and off campus, for you to explore. First up is the Wade Center! The Marion E. Wade Center promotes cultural engagement and spiritual formation by offering a collection of resources available nowhere else in the world. We emphasize the ongoing relevance of seven British Christian authors who provide a distinctive blend of intellect, imagination, and faith: C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Dorothy L. Sayers, George MacDonald, G.K. Chesterton, Owen Barfield, and Charles Williams. The Wade Center implements these goals by Assisting scholars in their study of unique materials by and about these seven authors in order to generate new understandings; • Sharing insights with a broader audience through our numerous programs and publications; • Supporting artistic works inspired by our authors; • Welcoming visitors to our museum. They are open 9:00am-4:00pm each weekday, and we highly recommend you visit. What better time to soak up Christian literature history than during a writers conference?
