Kirtan is an artful fusion of mantra repetition and live music. Some of us feel particularly called to the spiritual side of yoga, or “bhakti,” the path of love and devotion. Bhakti yogis seek union with the divine aspect of the self through sacred thoughts and worship. Many bhakti yogis choose a specific aspect of the divine—such as the god Krishna or Hanuman, or a swami or guru—to focus on as the object of their devotion. Bhakti yoga might include chanting, meditation, mantra, prayer, poetry or rituals. Kirtan is a form of bhakti chanting that involves call-and-response repetition of phrases and words, primarily in Sanskrit. Today, May 21st, marks World Meditation Day (and I only just found out about it). I think it’s a pretty cool day to commemorate. Today is a call to participate in this millennia old practice. Meditation has played a prominent role in many religions throughout the world but is also practiced by those who are neither spiritual nor religious as a way of reducing stress and clearing the mind. And in today’s frantic world, I think meditation has become an essential tool. By meditating you can reduce stress, improve brain function and overall well being (to name but a few benefits). Meditation has had a profound impact on my life and I’ve been witness to the positive changes it’s had on many others. I try to spend at least a few minutes in every one of my yoga classes incorporating some form of meditation 🧘🏽‍♀️ My go to meditation, that takes a couple of seconds to practice is this (I hope you will find it useful). As you inhale, repeat mentally to yourself the word ‘Let’ and as you exhale, repeat mentally to yourself the word ‘Go’. Repeat the cycle three times… 😮‍💨 Inhale LET, Exhale GO Inhale LET, Exhale GO Inhale LET, Exhale GO Meditation comes in countless forms. I practice Japa (continuous repetition of a Mantra with the mind concentrated on its meaning, sometimes with a form). My dad chooses to fish and my sister bakes. Part 1, Yoga Ethics and Western Impositions Part 2, Yoga Ethics and South Asian Alternatives Part 3, Yoga Ethics and Activism When I began my research in South Asian Studies (SAS), the dominant view among people who fancied themselves scholars of South Asia was that there was no extensive or significant history of thinking critically about ethical, moral and political questions. This means, there wouldn't be any such thing as Yoga Ethics. My lonely distinction as a researcher since the 1990s has been to show that this narrative gets things upside down. Ethics or moral philosophy was the basic concern in this tradition (philosophy about dharma) and the usual gloss that denies that South Asians engaged critically in moral and practical questions is a function of Western colonialism and its anti-logical approach to everything. Here’s a picture of me thinking I know how to practice surabhi mudrā. This is how I feel after studying mudrā with Indu Arora for three days.😅🫶🏾🕉️ Stay always a student. Always humble. Always in awe to everything we don’t know. It’s beautiful. The world is mysterious. Our bodies are miracle makers. Our hearts are caves to explore. Our yoga is but an expression of all of this together. I am in awe, gratitude and quite speechless to @induaroraofficial wisdom. Thank you, Indu. How wonderful to have finally studied with you. I look forward to more. I first studied mudrā at Mount Madonna 2013 (Baba Hari Dass teachings) and fell in love with this part of Yoga. I bought Indu’s mudra book and knew I needed to study with her. The story behind the asana: The story of Virbhadrasana is about the goddess Sati. Sati married Lord Shiva against the wishes of her father. Her father and family made fun of her and Sati was shocked, sad and angry. She decided to leave her mortal body and ended her life by stepping into the sacrificial fire of Yagna. When Shiva learnt about Sati’s death, he was very sad and angry. She was so angry that she tore out his hair, from which the fearsome warrior Virbhadra emerged. The different variations of Virbhadrasana are inspired by the different postures Virbhadra adopted when he fulfilled Shiva’s wishes. As he prepared to attack, he raised his hands to the sky (Virbhadrasana I). When he arrived at the scene, he had both hands outstretched to the side (Virbhadrasana II). Finally, he took the position of Virbhadrasana III to behead them all at the yagna. Finally, Sati’s father asked for forgiveness and Shiva relented. Today’s Jivamukti XL practice is a celebration and honouring of all things Sūrya (Sun )☀️! In ‘Here Comes the Sun’ , we explore the power of rising, lifting energy. So long we have been wrapping ourselves up warmly in the winter months and now it’s time to unfurl our bodies and embrace the solar fire 🔥 This is most unapologetically the sweet ‘yang’ to the yin of winter practice. Sūrya Namaskar is a deliberate moving prayer which salutes the sun and earth in its mandala of movement and breath. We can use a Sanskrit count to add a layer of dhāraṇa (deep concentration), together with dṛṣṭi (gaze/focal points) , plus an intention to offer the moving prayer to the greater source. There is also a beautiful Sūrya Namaskar prayer / mantra which can be chanted out loud, or silently, with 12 stanzas in total, each representing a different blessing of the sun, for which we are grateful. Some attributes of Sūrya ☀️ One who is the friend of all Shining, radiant One dispeller of darkness / encourager of activity One who illumines, the bright one all-pervading one who moves through the sky Giver of nourishment and fulfillment One with golden colour of brilliance giver of light with infinite number of rays The son of Aditi, the cosmic divine Mother One who is responsible for all life One deserving praise and glory Giver of wisdom and cosmic illumination Each of these Sanskrit lines goes with one of the postures in Sūrya Namaskar and adds meaning and significance to the movements that we all know so well 🙏🏽 I can’t wait to see all the yogis coming out to play this weekend- today and tomorrow! If you go to the gym daily, it takes a week to notice the smallest change 1 month, more noticeable difference, 3/6/12 months - significant change Primarily the transformation is physical Emotional + mental transformation requires specific targeted workouts Breath-work, sound, meditation are some And the BIG one... How does one promote any professional engagement in the midst of many concurrent genocides, impending climate catastrophe, and one of the most disheartening election years in memory? It often feels easy for me to downplay the importance of getting into body through movement. To think that the work that some yoga teachers are doing is a bandaid over a bullet hole; plugging away in our studios that participate in the same wellness industrial complex that alienates the queer folks and people of color that helped me become who I am. But every so often, certain collaborations reignite the purpose and passion that brought me to teaching, a practice that brings me back to the mat day in and day out. The 300hr Yoga Teacher Training at The Portland Yoga Project is that project, that collaboration, that affirmation. YOGA OFF THE MAT Series Over the last couple of months, I have brought my Asana practice down to a bare minimum. Mostly because certain postures, including downward facing dog, are re-triggering my shoulder injury. So for fitness, i now rely on walks, strength training & pilates - all of which I love. De-coupling my physical asana practice & my yoga practice have finally allowed me the time to invest in reading the scriptures. Because now when I ask myself 'have i done yoga today' - the answer can't be an asana class ;) So I have to keep my sadhana going in other ways. This study has lead to more inquiry : ⭐Why do I practice yoga? ⭐What does it means to practice yoga? ⭐What types of yoga suits my mind & body and what types push it towards pain? ⭐Does 108 Surya namaskars really make me a good Yogi? ⭐Am I still a yoga teacher if I don't teach/do asana? Loads of questions & very very interesting answers. Of course I've been moving away from a pure asana based approach of yoga for some time now. But I've felt drawn to the scriptures only this year. Consumerism has reached all aspects of our life & why shouldnt it reach yoga. Social media adds it's own flavour to the whole 'how to be a yogi' game show. Instagram makes you mostly feel inauthentic if you can't do a handstand after 15 years of yoga. I haven't done a 60 min asana practice in about half a year now & yet my yoga practice has grown deeper. I sit with mantras & the texts that ask me to go deeper into the meaning of the self. They help me still my monkey-mind more than an asana class ever could. Don't take me wrong. I love love love an asana practice & i will continue to teach it & encourage people to learn and practice it. If that's the door open for you right now - please walk through it. But after that please also proceed through to other more gorgeous doors. Via a handstand or not. This verse from the Ahirbudhnya Samhita is said to be the first explanation of yoga dharma - The union of the individual soul with the Universal Soul is said to be yoga. Oh, the kind of world we practitioners could foster - internally and externally - if we practiced a decolonized understanding of Patañjali’s Yoga Sūtra. Īșvara is not a creator god of the west, as many interpretations of the Yoga Sūtra would have us believe. Īsvara is lordliness, as in sovereignty or autonomy. Similarly, Yoga is not a religion or spirituality, though one might practice religion or spirituality alongside their Yoga. The moment we decide to practice Īșvara praņhidāna (devotion to autonomy - the heart of the practice) is the moment we are autonomous. This means we are not binding the options available to us by looking through the lens of our past, our attitudes, or our beliefs. We are instead allowing ourselves to observe the full spectrum of possibilities so that we might responsibly discern them. Those that are ethical (dharma) shake to the top and we continue our devotion with self-governance (svādhyāya) and doing differently from our past (tapas) in alignment with what is responsible. We are honest in doing what is responsible (śauca) and we are content in acting responsibly (santoșa). This devotion can create byproducts: More kindness. More inclusivity. More empowerment. More wellbeing. More freedom. For all, not just ourselves. . . . This means, there wouldn't be any such thing as Yoga Ethics. My lonely distinction as a researcher since the 1990s has been to show that this narrative gets things upside down. Ethics or moral philosophy was the basic concern in this tradition (philosophy about dharma) and the usual gloss that denies that South Asians engaged critically in moral and practical questions is a function of Western colonialism and its anti-logical approach to everything. 🥘 Khichadi is a nourishing Ayurvedic staple celebrated for its tridoshic qualities, catering to all three doshas – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Stay tuned for more dosha insights in the upcoming posts! 👀 Recipe for Khichadi/Kitchari/Pongal 👇🏼 Ingredients: 2 tbsp ghee ¼ tsp cumin seeds ~10 curry leaves (optional) 1 tsp Turmeric 8 whole black peppercorns or ½ tsp of ground pepper A pinch of asafoetida (optional but recommended, as it aids in digestion, especially for beans and lentils) 1 cup Moong Dal (Split Green Gram) 1 cup White Rice (Recommend washing and soaking dal and rice for at least 4 hours) 7 cups Water Salt as needed 3 tbsp chopped cilantro (optional) A cup of chopped veggies (optional) Heat a deep pan and incorporate the ingredients in the specified order. Let it cook on a medium flame and stir occasionally until the dish reaches a semi-soupy consistency. A colonized understanding of The Yoga Sutra will lead one to believe the philosophy has little to do with how one behaves in a public world. It will seem as though the practice only involves the inner landscape, which can encourage a narrow perspective that doesn’t consider other points of view. A decolonized understanding expands the practitioner’s perspective, where caring for ourselves and caring for others isn’t contradictory, but compatible. Dharma (ethics, morality) is what the many philosophies of South Asia are discussing. This debate is about the right or the good. The Yoga Sutra’s philosophy is no different. It’s an ideal dharma theory. Having a perspective is not the same as being independent. The attitude of a perspective binds our ability to see the options beyond that perspective and, consequently, to choose well. Yoga is a philosophy which motivates us to see the options (beyond our attitudes/perspectives) so that we might responsibly discern them. This is YS 1.2 in practice: “Yoga is the control of the (moral) character of thought.” Yoga encourages us to respect our own and others’ autonomy (Īșvara) by practicing devotion to the ideal of autonomy (Īșvara praņidhāna). Autonomy is what we all have in common. We practice devotion to the ideal of autonomy by differentiating between attitudes/perceptions and thinking. Self-study, self-determination, and self-governance (svādhyāya), as well as unconservativism in relationship to past action (tapas) accommodate this practice.
