Less than two hours before I got there, this beast passed by my camera! This is likely the biggest Grizzly I’ve ever captured on camera and it’s this big having come out of its den a short time ago. Imagine what it looked like in the fall! Needless to say I was on high alert the entire time. Every leaf rustle, twig snap, and tree creak caught my attention and my hand was never far from my bear spray. I also came across its tracks in the snow. Keep in mind tracks always appear larger as the snow melts, but these are still huge footprints. Причем судя по всему это одна и та же самочка. Коты известны своим пофигизмом и вспышек не боятся, так что я поставил целых 4, чтобы они больше освещали лес. Получилось немного загадочно и я остался доволен. Хотя, тут не обошлось без обработки. А потом @birdsandwonders сказала мне, что она сделала бы лучше и тут же сделала на скорую руку на моём компе. Получилось и правда лучше, но менее реалистично. Так что её вариант на 3м слайде. It turned out that in the spot where I last set up my camera, wildcats often roam. And it seems to be the same female cat. Cats are known for their indifference and aren’t scared of flashes, so I set up four to illuminate the forest more. It turned out a bit mysterious, and I’m quite satisfied with the result. However, there was some post-processing involved. Then @birdsandwonders told me she could do it better and quickly edited it on my computer. It did turn out better, but less realistic. 🌊 NEW RESEARCH 🌊 on shortfin devil rays, Mobula kuhlii, published in Marine Biology today. Cleaning stations are areas where cleaner fish remove parasites and clean wounds from their hosts, such as a ray. At a cleaning station that I discovered in 2020, we found out that these devil rays were hanging out in this specific spot on 56% of the days we observed them, and sometimes groups of more than 150 individuals were cruising on Aliwal Shoal Marine Protected Area, South Africa. Water temperature and current direction played a role in how long these rays get cleaned, with warmer waters and north currents meaning longer spa sessions. 🌊 Shortfin devil rays are currently unprotected in South Africa, despite being listed as an Endangered species by the IUCN. A pair of gray foxes came across one of my cameras! As of recent, there had been what seemed to be 2 separate gray foxes crossing my camera, but never in the same frame, so seeing both in the same frame is exciting! I also enjoy seeing other wildlife use this area, like eastern cottontails and groundhogs. Wilderness Wednesday arrives, and with it, a trail camera surprise! Yesterday morning was an example of another occasion in which the wilderness came to my backyard, as opposed to the other way around. This photo was sent to me by my future mother in law and friendly wilderness neighbor @boobusey For three weeks I watched as the sun met the black sky over the treetops just a few yards away from this spot. Twilight had not yet begun its daily fade into first light when this adult Black Bear strolled through this (hopefully) unfamiliar territory. Plenty of desirable habitat lies between Blue Mountain and where this bear stands, so it's hard to say where their den would be. Bears are known to cruise long ways this time of year to forage, right alongside the peak of many wildflowers in the area. Berries, bugs, and the occasional trash receptacle will draw their attention. Now as for the location, all I can say is that the residents of Middleburg proper may not be as far as they think from a potential black bear sighting…and I mean not far at ALL! This sighting is a testament to the effort and care that many private landowners of Western Loudoun County put into the health and management of their lands. Without their enthusiasm for a healthy landscape, and guidance from Virginia's hard working Department of Wildlife and Natural Resources, I am not sure we would ever have such opportunities for wildlife observation. I finally captured a Colorado mountain lion on camera! This one was tracking down a late night rabbit snack, but they usually eat deer and elk. Their homes are Florida to Alaska and everywhere in between. There’s probably one in your town right now that you’ll never see. Colorado lions are thriving. But in November there might be a ballot measure to vote on whether or not they can still be hunted in Colorado. I don’t do politics but I know something about this one. Don’t make the mistake of voting to remove mountain lion hunting. It may seem illogical but hunting actually helps the species and habitat by providing more funding and enthusiasm for research and protection than anything else provides. A big male ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) strolling through the Las piedras jungle. 🐆🍂 Even though it’s not the sharpest photo ever, it’s still special to me because it’s one of my first pictures of a fully wild jungle cat. We know from camera traps that jaguars, pumas, ocelots, etc. are all around us in the jungle, even in close proximity to our camp. However, these cats aren’t easy to see, especially in an area as remote as this, where they have not been habituated to people as much, like in other places (wildlife watching hotspots). The photo was taken using a motion sensor, where the ocelot itself triggered the camera. “These images show framed moments of a cougar, a lesser spear-nosed bat, and a Southern American tapir deep in the Amazon Rainforest. You may recognise the site that the cougar is located as this is where I captured my winning #WPY59 image ‘Silence for the Snake Show’. To capture the image of the lesser spear-nosed bat, I built a simple infrared barrier. To do this I set up a simple LED that made infrared light on one side and on the other side I set up a receptor. At the other side, there is a receptor. The Turkestan lynx, despite showing a wide range of expansion, is frequently found at very low densities in Mongolia. By placing camera-traps in narrow passages or on small streams, we aim to collect data about the presence of the species.
