All the movies I've been posting over the past week have been from this DVD set. It's a great box set if you wanna check out the cinematic works of Val Lewton. Some of the films you can find streaming, but I'm not sure about many of them. If I had to rank them in order of the ones I enjoyed most, it would probably look something like this.... 9. Curse of the Cat People 8. The 7th Victim 7. The Ghost Ship 6. Isle of the Dead 5. Bedlam 4. I Walked with a Zombie 3. The Leopard Man 2. Cat People 1. The Body Snatcher But honestly, you can't go wrong with any of them. I'd highly recommend this boxset if you come across one at a decent price.

Poison for the Fairies/Veneno para las hadas (dir. Carlos Enrique Taboada, 1984) Poison for the Fairies is a gothic fantasy seen through the eyes of two pre-teen girls, the dominating Verónica (Ana Patricia Rojo) and the naive Flavia (Elsa María Gutiérrez). Hearing the tales of witches told to her by her grandmother, Verónica convinces Flavia that she is an old witch inside a child's body. Flavia, lonely and seeing a friend in Verónica, believes her, and Verónica manipulates the situation into getting whatever she wants. Writer-director Carlos Enrique Taboada (on the back of this, a director I'm going to be exploring further) keeps the point of view firmly through the eyes of the two girls. Adults are shot from either the shoulders down or the feet up. At other points in the film, their faces are obscured by shadows or by positioning them with their backs to the camera. Flavia's nightmares and imagination conjure a witch's silhouette and give an owl a malignant presence, the latter feeling brought on by Verónica's claim that the owl is her familiar. There aren't many true moments of horror in this film until the very end. Everything is suggested by Verónica, and Rojo, an enchanting actress, plays her so convincingly that we, too, are seduced by the idea that witches do, in fact, exist. This is billed as a horror film, after all, and so we want to believe it. The opening credit sequence leads us to believe it also. Yet, this is far from being a horror film. It reminded me of that other non-horror Curse of the Cat People (1944), and like the genius behind it, Val Lewton, Taboada has a handle on the power of suggestion that lies at this film's core. Ann Carter (born June 16, 1936) had a brief career in Hollywood during the 1940s, becoming something of a sensation when producers – captivate by her likeness to that of Veronica Lake – cast her as the actress’s daughter, Jennifer Wooley in the comedy fantasy adventure "I Married a Witch" (1942), directed by René Clair (sadly, many of Ann’s scenes ended up on the cutting room floor). • In 1944, she acted in another box-office hit, the mystery drama "The Curse of the Cat People", as Amy Reed, with Simone Simon and Kent Smith, produced by Val Lewton. • Born in Syracuse, New York, to Bert and Nancy Carter, she moved with her mother to Palm Springs aged three, when Nancy fell sick (she was told the dry air would help her). An aspiring actress herself, Mrs. Carter had ambitions for her daughter. • Whilst riding a bus together in Los Angeles, the pair were stopped by a talent scout who encouraged them to meet with the producer Herbert Brenon. The upshot was a minor bit in "Last of the Duanes" (1941), for 20th-Century-Fox. • Ann played Olga Pavlov in "The North Star" (1943); had a small bit in "And Now Tomorrow" (1944); joined Sharyn Moffett, Regis Toomey, and Madge Meredith for "Child of Divorce" (1946); and played Humphrey Bogart’s daughter in the 1947 thriller "The Two Mrs. Carrolls" (pictured here). • “Bogart was a really nice man,” she remembered in 2010. “He nicknamed me Tonsils, because on set I yawned in his face during a rehearsal, and "he peered into my mouth, down my throat, and... it was "Tonsils" after that”. • By the end of the decade, Ann’s film career was over. She worked on radio for a time, then, in 1948, contracted polio and took years to recover. She married Crosby Newton in 1952 and together had three children. She’s a haunting, luminous presence in French films like La Bete Humaine (1938) opposite Jean Gabin. After the couple gets married, Oliver becomes concerned about Irena's notion that she is cursed and may transform into a large cat in the heat of passion. Confiding in his beautiful assistant, Alice Moore (Jane Randolph), about his marital issues, Oliver unwittingly triggers Irena's curse, with tragic results. There was just something about this movie that drew me to the story and the suspense. I honestly didn’t know how it was going to end. It spent little time explaining the supernatural elements and just assumed it’s validity in this world. Great film and one that I can see coming back to in the future. 🐈 CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE (1944) - In this sequel to "Cat People," Oliver Reed (Kent Smith) is married to the lovely Alice Moore (Jane Randolph). The couple has a daughter, Amy (Ann Carter), a withdrawn young girl with a vivid imagination who soon begins talking to visions of her father's deceased former wife, the cursed Irena (Simone Simon). When Amy unintentionally incurs the wrath of a mentally unstable woman (Elizabeth Russell), the girl's relationship with Irena's apparition comes into play. Not nearly as intriguing as the first one. Honestly, as a parent this movie creeped me out on a next level. Can’t say this was my favorite. Odd choices here and there limited to thrills and suspense for the sake of more unsettling child-focused story beats. After being cinema's biggest jerk off husband, Kent Smith returns as 'Oliver Reed' (yes I know) cinema's biggest jerk off dad in #CurseOfTheCatPeople. I think this is a vastly superior film to an already classic film - subtler, with a brilliant theme of imagination and make believe vs reality and harsh truth. Scary Saturday Christmas edition with Curse of the Cat People,1944, starring Simone Simon, Ann Carter, Kent Smith and Jane Randolph. In this sequel to Cat People, the couple from the first film now have a daughter who's often left alone and is withdrawn and uses her imagination to ward off loneliness. She wishes for a friend and suddenly the spirit of Irena, the heroine of the first film, comes to her in the garden. The two bond but the child is hurt and confused when her parents don't believe in her new friend or support her playing with her. The parents become increasingly upset about their daughter's mental state. Meanwhile the little girl makes friends with an old lady down the street which upsets the woman's adult daughter whom her mother has rejected due to dementia. Things soon reach conflict and confrontation. I love this movie! It does have a Christmas scene and a very sweet scene of the little girl giving Irena a Christmas present in the snowy garden in the moonlight. This movie isn't as foreboding as the first and not as dark, but the strange,aloof little girl trying to navigate her lonely world and the people and spirits she meets does make for an eerie and ethereal story. I never liked the couple in the first movie, I can't forgive them for cheating behind Irena's back and now in this sequel we see what bad parents they are and once again,we see how sweet Irena was and how she didn't deserve her fate,she would have been a wonderful mother. There's plenty of emotions and sadness for the new cat girl, the daughter of the old woman, and how she resents this child waltzing in and her mother thinking that the child is her, still as a little girl,whilst she is rejected as some 'wicked lady pretending to be my daughter'. Remembering Val Lewton, the brilliant Russian-American film producer and screenwriter and novelist, born Vladimir Ivanovich Leventon in Yalta on this day in 1904. He wrote several novels, the ailurophobic short story 'The Bagheeta' and worked on major David O. Selznick productions including A Tale of Two Cities (1935), A Star is Born (1937) and Gone with the Wind (1939). His legacy, however, is as head of RKO's wartime horror unit, producing nine intelligent, atmospheric, often brilliantly understated noir-inflected horror films between 1942 and 1946. Directed by Jacques Tourneur, Robert Wise and Mark Robson, Cat People (1942), I Walked with a Zombie (1943) and the Karloff trio of The Body Snatcher, Isle of the Dead (1945) and Bedlam (1946) became classics, though the eerie The Ghost Ship, The Leopard Man and the remarkably bleak Psycho / Rosemary's Baby precursor The Seventh Victim (all 1943) feature some of the great genre moments of the era, while Curse of the Cat People (1944) has a magic and eloquence all of its own. Lewton was dead, at just 51, before the release of his final film Apache Drums (1951) but his reputation only grew over the decades. Something I edited out from my essay for Devapriya Roy’s anthology Cat People: a section about the beautiful 1944 film Curse of the Cat People, which was marketed as a sequel to the 1942 Cat People but was really a sensitive story about a lonely little girl named Amy, and her parents who worry that she spends too much time in a fantasy world. It was the first “horror film” to be shown in child-psychology classes in the US, and you’ll know why if you watch it. The Curse of the Cat People (that sensationalist title, and the posters of the time, were studio-imposed and not representative of the film itself) was one of my favourite discoveries a few years ago when I was exploring the work of producer Val Lewton. Pert, pretty, pouty, and fiery-tempered Simone Simon (born April 23, 1910) the daughter of a French mine operator and an Italian mother, was educated in several countries, before she finally settled in Paris where she studied Fine Arts, before switching to study dress-designing and modelling instead. Her natural beauty and charm quickly caught the attention of talent scouts, and she was put to work, initially in operettas and light comedies. • She became famous in Marc Allégret’s "Lac aux dames" and eventually after a handful of film, went off to Hollywood in 1936, making her debut there in "Seventh Heaven" (1937), with James Stewart (a less than successful redundant remake of the Janet Gaynor-Charles Farrell silent melodrama), the musical comedy "Love and Hisses" (1937), before playing the in title role in "Josette" (1938), in which she was fought over by Don Ameche and Robert Young. • Within 18 months, she was back in Europe, tempted by director Jean Renoir to play the temptress in "La Béte Humaine" (1938). During WWII, she returned, playing most memorably in director Val Lewton’s "Cat People" (1942) and the equally ghoulish "Curse of the Cat People", which reunited her with Kent Smith and Jane Randolph, and "Mademoiselle Fifi" (both 1944). • By the close of the decade, dissatisfied with the offers given to her, she quit and turned to the stage instead, with measurable results. She then returned to France, featuring well in a couple of Max Ophuls’ films, "La Ronde" (1950) and "Le Plaisir" (1952), however, by the end of the mid-1950s, her career was over. Her last appearance was in Michel Deville's "Femme en Bleu" (1973). • A decade before her death in February 2005, aged 94, she was asked to appear on a TV documentary about Jean Renoir, but turned the producers down citing that she didn’t want to appear on camera as ‘a very old woman’. • Despite her reluctance to appear on camera, she was a great correspondent. When Austin and I turned 21, she sent us a bottle of champagne, “My gift to you dear boys.
