Lee's suggestions for tinnitus In a recent live video class, a student asked Lee, "What do you suggest for tinnitus?" If you're not familiar with tinnitus, it's commonly described as a ringing sound, but some people hear other types of sounds, such as roaring, buzzing, or the chirping of "crickets." The problem is tinnitus is a completely subjective experience. Meaning other people can't hear it. It can negatively impact someone's concentration, their ability to enjoy reading, or getting a good night's sleep. And according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, severe cases can lead to anxiety and depression. These are Lee's suggestions for tinnitus: How you address tinnitus depends on what's causing it. If you've been around loud music, construction, or other loud noises, it's different than if it's hormonal or internal energy. But there are a couple of simple things you can do to support your ears right now without having to pinpoint the exact cause. One thing you can do is tonify your kidney energy. Because the ears are governed by the kidneys and your kidneys control hearing. Another thing you can do is to send energy to your ears after your Qi Gong practice. You can do that by cupping your palms over your ears after each practice. Imagine energy flowing into your ears. You can also try massaging the acupressure points around the ears. There's one right behind your ear lobes. Try to massage them a little every day to help relax the muscles around your ears and jaw. Lee will teach some of these exercises in the upcoming Qi Gong for Healthy Hearing Workshop. He'll also introduce some ear-healing approaches he didn't mention above, such as Fire Element Qi Gong flows to target specific types of ear problems. When combined, these exercises form a TCM-based ear health "system" you can safely do every day. Scientific Study shows Qi Gong relieves "Ringing Ears" Did you know some researchers have studied the effects of Qi Gong on tinnitus? In a 2010 study published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research, researchers found that "the practice of Qi Gong over a short period of five weeks induces significant changes in tinnitus." They went on to share the results of the study "Qigong did not cause any side effects and was completed by 80% of the assigned patients. Compared with the control group, Qigong participants experienced improvement in tinnitus severity...In the subgroup of patients with somatosensoric tinnitus, Qigong effects were more pronounced, resulting in a highly significant improvement in both scales compared to the waiting-list group." The researchers came to the following conclusion: "These findings suggest that Qigong interventions could be a useful complement to the therapeutic management of patients with tinnitus and especially for those with somatosensoric components. Satisfaction with the intervention, a high degree of completion, and stability of the effects for at least 3 months after the intervention further underscore the potential of Qigong in the treatment of tinnitus." "How often should I practice Qi Gong?" (answered) Here's the answer to how often to practice Qi Gong: It depends. There are always variables that have to be considered, right? So, to answer this question to the level you deserve, here are several options: Option 1: Whatever You Can Some Qi Gong is better than no Qi Gong whatsoever. So, even if you can't fit in the recommended minimum below, do whatever you can, as often as you can. Even one minute of practice is 100% more than no minutes of practice. We recommend you shoot for about seven minutes. This is just enough time to start to relax your nervous system. A good place to start are the seven-minute routines in our 30-Day Challenge, visit our Facebook page for the link. Option 2: The Recommended Minimum That said, Lee recommends students practice Qi Gong for a minimum of 20 minutes a session, three times per week. That's 60 minutes of practice per week total. However, the more often you practice and the longer you practice in each session, the better chance you have of achieving desired results faster. Option 3: The Ideal For most people, the ideal schedule is 60 minutes a session, three times per week. That's three hours of practice per week. This is generally how often Lee teaches and how many classes we release each week. With three times a week at 60 minutes per session, you'll start to notice results faster. Why is it ideal to practice for 60 minutes three times a week? We've noticed that 60 minutes per session is the "sweet spot" for physical, emotional, and even spiritual growth. At 60 minutes, you accelerate healing and sustain higher levels of energy. And when you keep showing up on that schedule, your results compound. Energy vampires "Energy vampires" are all around us. (This is Max, one of the writers.) These are people or things that drain energy. They usually clamor for your attention. They can be friends, family members, neighbors, strangers at the grocery store, or the talking head on the news. Here are some simple ways to protect yourself from being drained by energy vampires: 1. Get some physical distance from them This one comes straight from the expert on the subject, Judith Orloff. Judith is a board-certified psychiatrist and author of the bestselling book The Empath's Survival Guide. Even if you don't identify as an empath, it's best to heed these words of wisdom when you find yourself too close to an energy vampire. 2. Put down the phone I recently realized that when I'm looking at my phone, scrolling through social media, or reading the news, I'm involuntarily opening my energy field to all sorts of energy vampires. Here's what he shared: The world around us can often be stressful. We get stressed from things like the news, politics, harm to the environment, and personal stresses from our family, relationships, jobs, and finances. These external stressors make us feel overwhelmed, activate our fight or flight mode, and sometimes even cause illness. Iron Shirt helps us deal with this stress. Originally, Iron Shirt was a martial practice that started in Shaolin temples in ancient China. These Shaolin monks, mainly Buddhists who practiced kindness and compassion, needed to protect themselves. Anytime a dynasty changed in China, the new powers would wipe out the previous culture and eliminate the current religious and spiritual practices. Oftentimes, the Shaolin temples would be on well-sought-after land, so the Shaolin monks and spiritual beings needed a practice to protect themselves. Iron Shirt training was one of those practices. Today, we're in a very different place than the Shaolin monks 2,000 years ago. We are in a completely different culture with a different set of energetic circumstances. "Stop crying" At some point in our lives, we've all been told to stop feeling something. We've been told to "Stop crying. Stop yelling. Stop feeling angry," usually by our parents. But it really doesn't work to tell someone to "stop feeling" something they're feeling. Feelings just don't work like that. Kids know. It's intuitive. Emotions and feelings need to be expressed. Once expressed, they are transformed. It's the words "stop crying" that can shut us down and create blocked energy, which can make us sick. We internalize what our parents, partners, teachers, friends, and co-workers say to us. We learn, "It's not okay to cry. It's not okay to EXPRESS myself." Usually, it's because society doesn't teach us how to work with our emotions… and support others as they navigate their emotions. In Qi Gong, we often nurture the yin energy within ourselves. Yin is the "feminine" energy. It's soft, watery, and yielding. The flowing movements you practice in a routine are generally yin movements. They help bring water to the joints so you can move without pain. But you need a healthy balance between yin and yang movements, or your body won't have the strength or integrity to move and not injure yourself. Yang provides the structure your body needs to withstand injuries, blows, and unexpected falls. The same goes for your internal state and emotions. You need a healthy balance of yin to flow with life, but you also need active yang energy to protect yourself from the emotional blows you encounter daily. Shaolin Monks first practiced Iron Shirt Qi Gong to protect their bodies from the trials of combat. Now it's practiced to protect the physical and emotional body from unexpected injury, disease, and the stress of modern life. Qi Gong in the Middle East (Lina's story) Lina Bajandooh worked in the advertising industry for years and it took a toll on her health. She said, "I developed chronic stress and anxiety symptoms along with chronic neck, shoulder and leg pain." She was looking for a way out of advertising, so she became a life coach. As she looked to add movement-based modalities to her life coaching practice, she discovered Lee's YouTube videos. She practiced the routines in the video and started experiencing results, so she joined one of his online courses. Is this the "perfect warm-up"? Most people do a warm-up before doing workouts like weightlifting, running, biking, etc. Warm-ups often involve some kind of stretching, but a lot of times they can lack flow. Take warm-ups for running, for example. Oftentimes a runner will do pulsing bends to stretch their hamstrings or shake out their legs and that's it. All of which is okay and is better than not stretching at all, but there are more optimal ways to energize the body before a workout. This is where Qi Gong comes in, specifically the Blue Dragon Qi Gong form. (We'll get to Blue Dragon in a moment…) Qi Gong is a wonderful practice to do before a workout because it gently awakens your body and puts you in a state of flow. This flow enhances your ability to stay present during your workout, which can help reduce the chance of injury. Now, any Qi Gong routine could be used as a good warmup, but one of the best sequences is the Blue Dragon Qi Gong form. The dance-like movements found in this form help energy flow into every part of your body, from your legs to your arms, to your head. Power What's the first thing you think of when you hear the word power? Maybe your mind pictures lightning or a big blast of raw electricity. Or you imagine hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornados. But there's another thing that people associate with power. Dragons. Dragons have often represented very powerful yang energy. They're depicted breathing fire and igniting fear in the hearts of those who face them. However, this is usually the Western view of Dragons. In the Eastern view, they're often depicted as powerful creatures of flow and balance. While yang power is direct and forceful, yin power is soft and subtle. Yin power is the vibrating electricity in the space where all that yang power stuff happens. It's the slow gentle force that creates life, heals wounds, and helps create Qi flow through your meridians. So while Dragons are extremely strong and powerful, they also have a subtle flow and grace that we can learn from, and mirror in our movements. When we do, we always do our best to consult with Lee and provide thoughtful answers. When a few students ask a question, it's usually safe to say that there are numerous others who are wondering the same thing. Doing vs playing Qi Gong: What's the difference? East and West view Qi Gong in different ways. Westerners usually say, "I do Qi Gong," whereas, according to Lee, the Chinese translation is "I play Qi Gong." Even if Westerners say, "I practice Qi Gong," it doesn't make much room for the idea of play. It's a small distinction, but seeing Qi Gong more like Eastern practitioners do can unlock a whole new level of enjoyment for your Qi Gong "play." No matter where you're from or what your culture is, kids play. They run, jump, skip, and swing to their heart's content. But when they get older, kids become adults and get these un-fun things called "responsibilities." We've all been there… Instead of prioritizing play, we get bogged down with stuff we feel we need to do: chores, errands, bills, etc. And while those things are necessary, they don't bring us a ton of joy. In fact, most times, our to-do list just stresses us out. You see? We call it a "to-do" list. Not a "to-play" list. The Western way is to constantly do, do, and do. But most of the time, doing doesn't leave room for play. Play is essential for living a fun and joyful life. Eastern Qi Gong practitioners, while they have their own adult responsibilities, haven't lost sight of this. They know play isn't just for kids. It's for adults, too! But the thing is, play doesn't just happen on its own. We need to cultivate playfulness. That's where the Five Animal Frolics comes in. Surprising ways we sabotage our Qi You'll often hear Lee say something like, "Transform stress into vitality." This transformation often happens naturally through the course of your Qi Gong practice. But how do you transform stress into vitality if you live with fatigue? Meaning, if you're constantly exhausted and simply the THOUGHT of any effort wears you out, where do you begin? To answer the question, it might be helpful to take a look at what NOT to do. Lee recently identified the three most common mistakes he sees people make when struggling with fatigue and getting their energy back. Let's start with the most obvious: 1. Trying to manage energy levels with coffee and other stimulants This one is everywhere in our society. A Starbucks coffee in hand is practically a symbol of alertness, productivity, quick energy, and getting things done. There's nothing wrong with coffee, green tea, or other stimulants. But too much coffee and caffeine can give you false energy, which can actually dig you deeper into fatigue. So what most people need is a gentle, non-stimulant-based energy replenishment strategy. 2. Not moving much Lack of movement may be the biggest stumbling block of all for people struggling with low energy. When you're tired it's extremely difficult to move. But if you sit or lay down all day, Qi becomes stagnant and it becomes even harder to get yourself in motion again. The key is to gently move your body in ways that are nourishing.
