The thing about adventure dogs is they live life on the edge, and sometimes the edge cuts both ways. Skadi is healing up from a neck wound incurred while sprinting on snow crust two weeks ago and getting stabbed by a tree stob. Initially, the wound was about 1/4 inch in diameter, but then she attended to it with a back foot and turned it into an infected laceration of more than an inch long by 1/2 inch wide. Another vet visit, a good clean-out with chlorhexidine and a two week stretch of antibiotics, and she’s never really missed a beat. It’s always a balancing act between risk and reward, and sometimes the risks add up and it makes our hearts (and wallets) hurt. Even with Trupanion health insurance on both dogs, these things add up quickly. On our walk this morning, I was jumpy. Worried. We do leash walks in urban areas for safety reasons, but in the wild- all the joy in our lives is running free. We chose a safe spot and Skadi did what she does best: roll around in it and love every moment. The thing about love and life is that there’s no guarantee you won’t lose. Or get hurt. Badly. But armoring up, shellacking your heart, refusing to let anything or anyone get close will not stop pain from occurring. Neither will hiding out and refusing to do hard/scary things. It just means that you miss out on a thousand beautiful adventures. “Let life happen to you. Io mi trovavo spesso in viaggio per lavoro, gli aeroporti, così come le stazioni dei treni, erano un po’ la mia seconda casa. Forse per anni non ho mai percepito la frenesia dei miei ritmi come un limite ma come un’opportunità. Un giovedì mattina, però, tra un pranzo di lavoro e un meeting, ho fatto un salto nella farmacia accanto. Un sospetto di gravidanza mi assillava da giorni. Ho eseguito il test e in pochi secondi, sebbene fossi in ufficio, mi sono sentita come in aeroporto, davanti al display con i tanti voli. Questa volta, però, le possibilità non erano infinite: accettare o meno la gravidanza “questo era il dilemma”. Il mio compagno avrebbe capito? Si sarebbe assunto la responsabilità, oppure spaventato mi avrebbe lasciato? E la mia carriera? Ero davvero pronta a lasciarmi sconvolgere la vita da un bambino?
