Corn, also known as maize, is a staple of the Mexican diet, and is central to Mexican culture and agriculture, history and national identity, and is integral to Indigenous cultures and spiritual practices. We are calling upon Canada to respect the seed sovereignty of Indigenous and peasant farmers in Mexico and their pursuit of food sovereignty. The Organic Task Force is a new policy-research project of COG's that brings together researchers and farmers to identify the impacts of organic production and provide recommendations on how targeted government support for the organic sector can help achieve Canada’s economic, environmental, and climate goals. COG is grateful to have a whole host of insightful, dedicated and diverse voices contributing to the Organic Task Force, including our three Co-Chairs. Throughout the day we are introducing you to all three! Ian Cushon - with his wife Jo-Anne and their son Liam - operate Moose Creek Organic Farm on over 5,000 cultivated acres in Saskatchewan. Certified organic since 1989, @moosecreekorganicfarm grows wheat, oats, flax, hemp and alfalfa seed. Ian is a past president of the Saskatchewan Organic Development Council and a former advisory board member of the Organic Agriculture Centre of Canada. In 2011, Country Guide magazine named Ian as one of the 12 most influential farmers in Canada. In 2024, Ian and Jo-Anne received an outstanding organic farmer award from Sask Organics. Why is Ian involved with the Organic Task Force? "I am hopeful that Task Force will develop a strong evidence based and realistic case for supporting the adoption of more organic farming in sectors and regions, where organic ag. can deliver significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the negative environmental impacts of conventional farming systems. I am also hopeful that the Task Force will be able to show the positive economic impact of organics at the farm level. And this economic advantage will continue to drive growth in the number of farmers and area of organic production with or without government financial assistance and incentives. I am also hopeful that the Task Force proposed policy and programs will cover a significant amount of the costs associated with the transition of new organic farms and the adoption of best management practices on existing organic farms, that will increase productivity and provide further environmental and economic benefits." At the rural Schomberg farm plot Sundance Harvest operates- we grow a lot of cool crops such as broccoli, collards, kale, lettuce, arugula, spinach, radicchio, chard, radish, carrots, beets, cauliflower, garlic, kolhrabi, bok choy, celery etc. and some warmer crops such as melons, squash and sweet corn too. - In a very cool partnership with @sundancecommons we get to operate a demonstration sized market garden to supplement the learning experience of the New Farmer Training Program and other Sundance Commons programming events. At this market garden Chelsea is managing production. We have lots of hot crops here come the late May planting. Some are beans, snap peas, cut flowers, tomatoes, eggplant, okra, peppers, zucchini, cucumbers, tomatillos and a few others. - Planting starts for this site the end of May. For the rural and primarily cool crop Schomberg location, our seedlings go in tomorrow.

Piles of Things: one of our favorite easy lunches. We’re looking into being able to sell the kimchi and pickled jalapeños and other “value added “ stuff we make from our produce. Pictured here (in addition) are feta that we make from our goat milk, dried beans we grew last summer, an heirloom saved and handed down to our friend Faith @midnightsfarm by her grandmother, eggs from our pasture raised free range (for real) chickens fed organic grain, and kale and garlic we grew. Thankful for this bounty in this lovely place. We’ll be at the Lopez Farmers market selling our veggies and eggs in a month. #marketgardener

THE 8️⃣ VERY LABORIOUS STEPS FOR BED PREPARATION 1️⃣ cover area with the worlds largest tarp for [insert long amount of ⏱️] - this helps suffocate weeds without the use of ☠️ pesticides. FYI if it collects rain, it will be the heaviest thing you have ever moved 🏋🏻 2️⃣ lightly till the beds to soften any compacted soil and remove stubborn 🌾 weeds/grass 3️⃣ mulch 18” walkways + 30” compost beds. this really utilizes the small spaces for intensive planting while being able to cultivate using small tools or by 👋🏼. 18” is also the exact space caitlin needs to sit cross legged when she’s tired 🧘🏻♀️ 4️⃣ rake the compost into perfect pillowy 30” rows. don’t you dare touch these 🔪 caitlin is very protective about them being perfect 🔪🔪 5️⃣ irrigation - one of our favorite parts about the farm is the ☀️ #solarpowered well! 6️⃣ wonder why the backhalf of the plot only got 8 beds instead of 10? 7️⃣ learn the hard way what a TENTHS OF FEET 📏 tape measure is, which explains the 2 missing beds from step 6, and makes you wonder how something even more ridiculous than the imperial system exists. 8️⃣ pest control - row cover for 🐞🐛🪲and fence for 🐇🦌 Voila!
