Picked up some lovely objet d’art today from @hoof.antiques_brocante As soon as I saw it I knew I had to have it 🫣 ‘But what is it for?’ Asked the OH! My quick response was to hastily put a board over it and make it a potting bench. This serves a purpose for now but feel it could be more than a lowly potting bench! Bonjour 😘 I’m back from an idillic week in rural France. This was our view for the week. Not bad, right?!! We spent some well earned time off with great friends and our families. We ate, drank and laughed so hard!! We also found some time for a spot of gardening in a forgotten piece of land that our friends have acquired! I say gardening, it was more like archeology. Uncovering things long lost to nature was addictive. To find an old stone pathway gave me a sense that this place was once loved by someone but not for a long time. I’ve wanted one of these for a while. A pin holder (I call them flower hedgehogs 🤣) so you can position cut flowers better in your chosen vessel. Just need to find time to play around with it but a busy few weeks ahead for me. ‘Faciation’ - a random genetic mutation of the growing tip! I found this here today on Veronicastrum virginicum ‘Facination’. Apparently it’s common in this variety in particular but can also be found in Euphorbia and Digitalis. I think I’ve also seen this in Sunflowers 🤔 It’s beautiful in its own right but I think overall ruins the plants display! I’ll cut this stem out as it’s only this one that’s mutated. It doesn’t effect the plant year on year so may not happen again. Free plants?? Here’s how! 🙌 It’s that time of year when your Bearded Iris’s (Iris germanica) will thank you for a bit of division. See my stories for a how too. I’ll add them to my highlights for reference. I have a lovely new garden I’m working in and it has some huge clumps of lovely Iris’s. The flowering this year was minimal which is a sure sign that it’s time to divide and conquer 😉 The perfect time to do this is straight after flowering. Division breaths new life into these must have cottage garden favourites. They are great for a sunny border and can tolerate drought. From a really big clump, probably around 1m in diameter I got 39 new plants. Some were tiny and need to be grown on before going out to the borders as star performers. The 6 best contenders for this years Elephant Garlic harvest. Last year my biggest garlic, measuring around the widest point, came in at a whopping 33cm 🤯 Yes, my biggest garlic was 1ft circumference. It doesn’t sound right does it?? Today I found one of my worst nightmares!! Let me introduce you to the Box Moth Caterpillar 😳 I found this infestation on only one section of box hedging but in a garden with over 360 box balls and 100’s of meters of box hedging this honestly fills me with fear! The Caterpillars decimate foliage, almost making lace out of the leafs. They produce a kind of web in amongst the foliage so this is a tell tell sign if you can’t see the Caterpillars….they’re sneaky little buggers!! After I pulled myself together I went on the hunt I hand picked as many as I could find. Next step is to get some pheromone traps to try and break the cycle. I’ll keep checking the affected area and monitor closely. 🕵️♀️ You can see how many I collected, this was on about an 80cm portion of hedge so you can see how, if left untreated, this could get so out of hand! Keeping my 👀 peeled as I now have to survey all the other box. Lots of lovely Runner Bean and French Bean plants available. I have two different Runner Beans, Scarlet Emperor has a lovely red flower and long almost stringless beans. Celebration produces a very similar bean but has a lively coral flower. Grown together they make a truly beautiful display. The French beans I have are climbing, Cobra (long green) & Sunshine (a beautiful pale yellow long bean). Dwarf varieties of Faraday (Green) & Amethyst which produce a lovely purple bean, the flowers are also quite striking on this variety. All packs are £2 and minimum of 4 plants per pack. I forgot to post this before Christmas. After a day cutting back in one of my large gardens I decided to use as much as possible@to make my own wreath. It turned out so well! I made the wreath by twisting dogwood stems together. It’s always a bit messy on the side you add the stems in but this creates lots of little gaps for you to slot in your decorative stems. Just a few tulips planted. These will be used for stems next Spring to produce some lovely bouquets. 💐 It was very satisfying laying them all out like Tulip soldiers. It was quick and easy as I took the top 3 inches of soil off completely, laid the tulips in rows (each variety has 4 rows) and then covered back over with labels to corresponding varieties. Just a few Daff’s going in today 😅 This beauty is Tamara, a large flower in classic yellow with the same colour trumpet. Great for pots or borders and adds a real splash of colour early in the season. This is how my brain feels this year! I thought I’d do a quick post so you don’t totally forget about me! 😘 Woodchurch Market Garden has been on holiday for the last few months for so many reasons….. I took the decision to slow things down this year, after starting my lovely business through lockdown and as life returned to normal I was stretched to my limit. I’m a full time landscape gardener with a passion for growing but also design and build. After the schools reopened properly I found myself inundated with work. Gardens that needed to be brought back to perfection and quite a few enquiries for garden design. In the few short months between the end of April to now, my regular gardens and estates are back to their full glory and two out of 3 full design and builds have been completed with one left to break ground in the coming weeks. This year I have BIG birthday coming up and our little family decided it was time to move up the property ladder. We are looking forward to moving in the coming weeks and although it has taken SO MUCH longer than we anticipated, the end is in sight. The whole process has been completely overwhelming BUT I am looking forward to the new adventure! Woodchurch Market Garden has had to take a back seat to allow me to complete previous commitments and allow us to make this huge change in our lives. Lots has still been happening behind the scenes to make sure that I will will have lots of lovely veg and flowering plants for you next year. It won’t be long now until I have a full range of lovely Spring flowering bulbs, onion and garlic sets and lots more to fill your Winter beds. I can’t wait to get my new propagation houses up and running at the new place and then it’s all systems go. All my precious equipment is all packed and ready to go (and has been for weeks 🙄) and I can’t wait to get growing again. Perfect little plugs 🤩🤩 these were desperate for potting on and getting harder to keep them hydrated. Time for graduation to a bigger pot. These are my cornflower ‘Black Ball’ plants. I just love how they pop out of the trays like this.... I was trying to save space by keeping them in their plug trays but the time has come. From Monday/Tuesday the nighttime temps are looking better. This has certainly been an extreme April!! If you are on heavy soils these can always be started in modules or pots and planted out at a later date when the ground is less waterlogged. Best to get them planted now as both onions and garlic need a period of cold to trigger growth. Red Karmen is a red onion that is perfect for Spring planting. The onions themselves have red skins, great taste and store really well. 40 sets per bag. The second variety is a brown onion called ‘Sturon’ 🧅 Again this is one of the best varieties for Spring planting. It produces nice shaped, mild flavoured onion bulbs and is one of the best varieties for storage. 40 sets per bag. Elephant garlic is back in stock. As we’ve entered tier 4 lockdown just before Christmas I thought I’d get some garden pressies made up. This lovely little kit includes: ✨30 of my black, 15cm plant labels ✨1 fineliner chalk pen All packaged in a reusable hessian tie string bag. 🌱£10 each. These would make a lovely gift for that gardener in your life! I pondered for a long time on how to label my plants in the most sustainable way 🧐 I tried wooden labels but they just rotted and the writing became illegible so I made the choice that plastic was the right way to go. All I needed to do was to make sure it was as easy as possible to reuse them without spending hours scrubbing all the old writing off! These labels were my solution. The black labels allow you to write on them with chalk pen which makes them really stand out. The marker is 100% waterproof so it won’t wash off when watering or if it’s raining. To remove the writing you can just wipe over with a scourer and water and they look just as good as the day you bought them! This has not only made my pots looks super smart it has also meant that I can reuse all of my labels really easily. I’m already stressing about the work load for next year 😳 so I thought I’d get as much prep done now! Today I started building my tomato frames for next year. I have put 6 eucalyptus posts a long way in to the ground so It definitely won’t collapse! Then put some top braces in and wires to run the length of the framework. To these I have already hung my reusable string so I’m ready!! I just need to put some additional bracing in to keep the 3 ‘hoops’ apart to keep the wire nice and tight but for now they’re held with some canes 🤷♀️ hopefully it will hold until I can find a permanent solution and the best part is it didn’t cost a penny! Winter planting in this bed complete! I’ve got a mixture of Lettuce ‘Arctic King’ Mizuna, Mibuna, Mustard ‘Red Frills’, Pak Choi, Yu Choi Sum, Savoy Cabbage ‘Endeavor’, Cabbage ‘Caraflex’ and Chinese Cabbage ‘Hilton’. I’ve planted the oriental leaves and lettuce around the edges, the rest is taking up the middle of the beds! It just shows you how much you can squeeze into a 3m x 1.2m bed. Sweet Peas as far as the eye can see ❣️ I sowed my sweet peas at the beginning of September and they’ve already sprouted. I can wait to use these in my schemes next year and I’ve chosen some new varieties that I can’t wait to try! These will be available for sale next Spring as who can resist a Sweet Pea. They’re a great annual climber with beautiful blooms that are full of scent. Even though they don’t last long as a cut flower I can never resist picking bunches to bring in the house as the scent is so heavenly!
