The McKim, Meade, and White Vanderbilt mansion in Hyde Park, overlooking the Hudson River, is one of the greatest Beaux Arts buildings in America. The design is a masterpiece of axial symmetry, four grand Corinthian porticoes on axis with one another, proudly monumental, redolent of ancient Rome. The grounds are an important arboretum, containing the oldest ginkgo tree in north America. It was the trees, actually, that led neighbor Franklin Delano Roosevelt to acquire the estate for the National Park Service, as much as the importance of the house. This watercolor was a wedding present for one of my college roommates that got married in the ‘90s, hence the terrible photo resolution. The design was cribbed from Harbor Hill, the unreal mansion for the Mackay family. I thought this was an appropriate provenance as a gift to my friend since the property for the mansion was a wedding gift from the parents. The fortune came from the Comstock Lode of silver in Nevada. Clarence Mackay married Katherine Duer, a debutante, swipe to see her portrait. She worked closely with Stanford White and the house was modeled after Francois Mansart’s Chateau de Maisons, in the 17th C. The gardens were done by Guy Lowell, and the seriously over the top stables by Warren and Wetmore in the 30s. This masterpiece was lost in the late 40s. A truly magnificent piece of American art.

The 57-room Romanesque revival Tiffany Mansion sat on the corner of 72nd Street and Madison Avenue until it was demolished in 1936. Completed in 1885, the Tiffany home was still one of the earlier grandiose mansions to grace the Upper East Side, its scale almost dwarfing the other (not inconsiderably sized) homes around it. One of the particularly fascinating aspects of the composition of Julius Wilcox’s 1892 photograph is that he chose to leave the empty plots of land to the west and across 72nd Street visible, capturing this transitional moment in the build-up of the Upper East Side. Offices in a Masterpiece....I took this from the elevated train stop in Chicago approx 5 years ago when I worked in this building on left - The Monadnock Building...( the “planes trains and automobiles” end scene was also shot on this platform too) When it was completed in 1893, the Monadnock was the world's largest office building. People are still startled by the power and simplicity of its design; some say that modern architecture began with its sweeping curves. The restoration of the Monadnock is a nationally acclaimed melding of historic character and modern technology. The building’s 300 suites are ideal for independent professional firms and entrepreneurs. Thursday, October 29, 2020 THROWBACK THURSDAY Helmsley Palace Hotel in 1989 455 Madison Avenue, Manhattan Throwback to winter 1989, Standing at the gate in the courtyard of the magnificent Villard Houses, designed in 1884 by architect, Joseph M. Wells of McKim Meade and White, in the Renaissance Revival style, basically as an Italian palazzo for the family in the middle of Manhattan. St. Patrick’s Cathedral, in the Neo-Gothic style, can be seen in the background. The property was repurposed by Harry and Leona Helmsley as the fabulous Helmsley Palace Hotel in 1981. The Hemsleys built a modern tower behind the Landmark mansion and operated the opulent hotel until 1982. Their hotel empire they created in the 80s, was operated by the “beloved”, Leona Helmsley, with a reputation as, “Queen of Mean”! WOW, New York in the decadent 80s! My favorite part of the Princeton reunion this weekend was seeing the Cottage Eating club. The club was founded in 1884, but as it’s membership grew, it required new accommodation. Charles Follen McKim of McKim Meade and White designed the Georgian structure in 1903 on a lot purchased by the club. Completed in 1906, the UCC has housed many notable members notably including Woodrow Wilson and F. The Century Association was established in 1847 when two private clubs merged with the purpose of promoting interest in the fine arts and literature. Sitting on the NE corner of Fifth Avenue and 37th Street, No. 411 is a unique structure compared to other commercial buildings of the era. Designed by Warren & Wetmore and completed in 1915 the stucco covered building features a strong baroque influence with terra cotta ornamentation prominently featured on the third and top floors. . Did you know, McKim, Mead & White designed the waiting room inspired by the ancient Roman Baths of Caracalla? New York’s Penn Station was so huge, even Grand Station could fit inside it (swipe to see cross section rendering). Con Edison purchased the building in 1959 as a steam plant and although they removed the six original (and enormous) smokestacks before the building was landmarked, much of the exterior remains intact.
