Die Gertelbach-Wasserfälle in Bühlertal waren fotografisch ein schwieriger Fall für mich. Ich wollte sowohl die besondere Stimmung mit dem Zwielicht im dichten Wald einfangen, als auch das fließende Wasser in Szene setzen. Der Automatik-Modus der Fotokamera ist mit wenig Licht und viel Bewegung total überfordert. Das geht nur mit manuellen Einstellungen. Guten Morgen liebe Graftenfreunde! Ein alter Bekannter tauchte gestern wieder einmal an der Prinzengraft auf: Reiher Hermann! Er war an der Uferkante unterwegs und hatte anscheinend Hunger. Der Graureiher ernährt sich hauptsächlich von Fischen, aber gelegentlich auch von Fröschen, Wühlmäusen und kleinen Vögeln. Ein Reiher fischt bevorzugt in flachen Gewässern mit einer Tiefe von 10 bis 30 cm oder vom Ufer aus, da er dann einfach beweglicher ist und schneller zuschlagen kann. Ganz langsam schreitet Hermann auf der Suche nach Futter durch die Uferzonen und bleibt immer wieder bewegungslos stehen. Lässt sich ein Fisch blicken, schnappt er dann aber blitzschnell zu. Ohne Mühe könnte Hermann Fische von bis zu 30 cm Länge fressen. Guten Morgen liebe Graftenfreunde! Große Aufregung an der Prinzengraft! Mama Teichhuhn war verschwunden! 😮 Mehrere Tage konnte man nur Papa Teichhuhn sehen, wie er - fleißig wie immer, aber eben auch alleine - seinen quirligen Nachwuchs vom April versorgte. Normalerweise bewältigen Herr und Frau Teichhuhn dieses Futter- und Beschützungs-Pensum gemeinsam oder sie teilen die Küken auf, so dass jeder nur einen Teil verpflegen muss. Am Samstag und Sonntag Abend allerdings mussten die Kleinen allerdings ganz alleine " ins Bett gehen". Alle sechs traten wie immer gegen 19 Uhr den Weg zur Insel an, um im künstlichen Nest die Nacht zu verbringen. Ganz brav kuschelten sie sich dort hinein und zeigten, dass sie doch schon ganz schön selbständig sind. Papa Teichhuhn wurde dann am Sonntag Abend beim schwimmenden Entenhäuschen gesichtet. Doch warum kümmerte er sich nicht mehr um den Nachwuchs? Und warum schleppte er eigentlich kleine Ästchen in das Häuschen? Die Auflösung gab es dann auch kurze Zeit später, als der Wind das Entenhäuschen in eine geeignete Position drehte: Mama Teichhuhn thronte im Häuschen ganz versteckt in einer Ecke auf dem nächsten Nest! Na klar, wenn im Juni - wie jedes Jahr - wieder Nachwuchs kommen soll, liegen die Teichhühner gut in der Zeit. Für uns heißt das jetzt allerdings auch, dass wir das schmuddelige Häuschen nicht - wie eigentlich geplant - saubermachen können... 🤷🏼♀️ Mit einigen Fotos dieser Beobachtungen wünschen wir Euch einen schönen Dienstag. 😘 Dabei sticht besonders der Schnappschuss der sechs entzückenden Teichhühnchen ins Auge, wie sie sich Sonntag Abend alle im Nest versammelt hatten. ❗️The helmeted guineafowl is native to sub-Saharan Africa (population from Morocco probably extinct). Introduced into many parts of the world, including the south-western Arabian Peninsula, Madagascar, 🌍 the Caribbean 🌎 and Australasia 🌏 It leads a terrestrial lifestyle, escaping on foot rather than flying when threatened. It is an endurance runner 🏃🏼♀️➡️ and can cover up to 5km a day. Outside the breeding season it forms groups of about 25 individuals. 🫣I saw it up close almost every day I was in Africa, but it was only on the penultimate morning of the safari that I managed to take a picture 📸 And why was that? As you know, I really like kingfishers 😍 On safaris in Kenya and Tanzania I have seen a few, but always from a great distance and only for a few seconds 😒 This time, as we were leaving the Ngorongoro Crater in the evening, something blue 💙 flashed in front of my eyes 🤩 I never dreamed it could be him! In the excitement of seeing a caracal a few minutes earlier, and knowing we were running out of time, I asked the driver to drive backwards. 🫶🏻 To my surprise and delight, this Woodland Kingfisher was sitting relatively close to the road. He was very calm and decided to give me about two minutes of his precious time by staying put. The plan was to go to the lake to photograph the flamingos 🦩 at sunrise 🌅 But on the way, we came across some male lions 🦁 It was a golden hour and I couldn’t pass up this opportunity. 🤔 Do you know what the golden hour is? 🔥 It is the magic hour for photography. The last hour before sunset and the first hour after sunrise are coveted moments for professional photographers. This is known as the ‘golden hour’ or ‘magic hour’. This is when the lighting conditions are perfect for taking exceptional photographs. Knowing how to harness the power of the golden hour is a tool that any photographer can use. 🔥 Unlike other times of the day, the sun does not shine directly down during the golden hour - its rays arrive at an angle, causing the light to be diffused. This softer type of light tends to make subjects look their best. 🔥 During the golden hour, the sun is low in the sky, creating longer shadows and favourable lighting conditions for creative epics. Light fringes, backlighting, sidelighting, silhouettes, sun flares and lens flares are often available during golden hour. In the Kelvin colour temperature spectrum, the light of the golden hour is warmer. It contains more yellow, orange and red. The atmosphere filters out the blue light as the sun gets closer to the horizon. After a pregnancy period which lasts about 110 days, the female gives birth to between 2 and 6 cubs. The female will leave the herd before birth to protect the young from other members of the herd. If the male decides that the cubs are not his offspring, he will not hesitate to kill them. The little lionesses spend most of the day playing and resting. Through these cute and innocent games, the little lionesses begin to learn how to hunt and strengthen their bonds within the group. For the first three months, lionesses are dependent on their mother’s milk. Only later does meat become part of their diet. When they are a little older and stronger, they can return to the herd with their mother. Their real hunting training begins before they are a year old. During this time they hunt with their mother or with other members of the pack. They develop the skills and techniques that will determine their survival in the future. The Augur Buzzard is a fairly large African bird of prey. There is a high variability of pigmentation among individuals of this species, but the tail is always rufous. It is found in eastern and south-western Africa. The Augur Buzzard prefers the hunting in upland savannah grasslands, high moorland, farmland and sometimes open forest or desert margins. The main diet of augur buzzards appears to be either small terrestrial mammals or reptiles, mainly snakes and lizards. Other prey may include small ground birds, insects and roadkill. Must the background always be blurry? Many photographers strive for images with a blurred background. Of course, a blurred background is highly desirable in nature photography. This can be achieved, for example, by setting the aperture as low as possible, when the background is far behind the subject, or by editing in graphics software. But is it always necessary to blur the background? Opinions are divided on this. It depends on the effect you want to achieve. The purpose of a blurred background is to draw attention away from distracting elements and focus it on the photographed subject. However, not all species will come out of hiding willingly, or at times when photography is not possible. I use my Instagram to share images of species that I have had the opportunity to observe and photograph in their natural habitat. I realise that not everyone has the opportunity to see these animals in person, so I am happy that everyone can see species that they may not have even known existed. Before my trip to Costa Rica, I was not even aware that the crested owl pictured here existed. This species of owl hides in the jungle thickets during the day. Of course, I could have blurred the background with a graphics program, but I wanted to show you the habitat in which this species lives, the dense jungle. Perhaps another photographer would have chosen to smooth out the distracting elements to enhance the beauty and uniqueness of this owl, and that is fine. Eurasian goshawk As late as the 1960s, Eurasian goshawks were very common birds in central Europe, but they were exterminated en masse by the rural population because of occasional attacks on domestic poultry. In some cases, people would climb trees containing hawk nests and destroy them, along with the eggs or chicks inside. It was not uncommon for adults who rose to defend the nest to be killed as well. Hawks are predators. They prefer to hunt other birds, usually pigeons, jays, crows, jackdaws or partridges. Sometimes a hawk’s prey will also be domestic fowl.
