Round 1 of peaches 🍑 😋 A cooler windy day to start the harvest of this 2 year old tree. I didn't thin them this year to see what became of things. I'll thin next year for sure. Each peach is just a bit smaller than last year. The birds are recognizing the color and began the harvest for us, so here we go. The smell is divine, and these will be perfect ripeness in the coming days. Food forests in the desert 🙌🤲 (Plus some mulberries since I didn't post the trees full abundance. Georgia peach growers are getting their 2024 harvest underway with expectations of a bumper crop after a dismal 2023. Last year, a warmer-than-normal winter and a late-spring freeze wiped out nearly all the state's overall production. University of Georgia Extension agent Jeff Cook said a normal season will produce about 2.5 million bushel boxes of peaches. But this year, it could be closer to 3 million bushel boxes. 🍑 The best way to start the morning in the garden as I harvested the first batch of peaches and a solitary fig! 🍈 Despite the unpredictable hard freezes that took a toll, killing several branches, nature’s resilience shined through with new offshoots that are carrying fruit 🌱 My ladies 🐝 have outperformed as usual and pollinated “too many” blooms. It looks like the tree is carrying more than it might handle. Next year, I’ll take the leap and thin out the blooms early. For now, I’m just grateful for the bounty. I wrapped the ripening peaches with agrofabric. The birds were starting to taste test for us, so I had to gently tell them no. 😂 Another way to protect your fruit is using mesh gift bags that have a drawstring, or if you have way too much fruit you can cover the whole tree. We have two mature peach trees in the @ourlostestate orchard, one white and one orange, and they produce many kilograms of fruit every year. Following a killer freeze in 2022, 80-90% of the Georgia and South Carolina peach harvest was lost in 2023 due to one of the warmest winters on record followed by snap freezes. State residents may have enjoyed less hours between 32-45 degrees Fahrenheit, but peaches need ~1100 hours in that temperature range to develop and stay resilient to late freezes. Due to another warm winter, Georgia and SC peaches only experienced 2/3 of those hours before getting hit by two snap freezes in March. Continuously warmer weather and volatile temperature swings may doom the future of the peach in the South. California led peach yield this year, even with a smaller-than-usual crop. Considering peaches sold for $40-$60/crate this summer, does it make sense for California farmers to think about peaches in the future? 🍑🍑🍑 Erinnert sich vielleicht jemand an unseren umgestürzten Pfirsichbaum?.. Er hat alles gegeben und uns dieses Jahr die schönsten Pfirsiche beschert! Anscheinend wird der abgebrochene Teil noch irgendwie versorgt (?). Our first peach harvest! 🍑 ☀️ Taking care of this peach tree for the past three years was a labor of love. It sustained heavy damage from the cicada invasion, a weird disease that caused all the leaves and fruit to fall and my goats chewing it almost to the ground. I nurtured it back to health and this year it has so many peaches on it.
