Lightningbug Larva looking for food on a collard green. The lightning beetle larvae are predators and gardeners best friend. The adult females lay their eggs in mid–summer. Eggs hatch by late summer and the larvae are present until the following spring. In the Climate G. to protect the larva aka also known as Glowworms. I help create their habitat planting native groundcover plants. A log. And fall leaves are tucked under perennials, shrubs, and trees. This provides a warm moist haven protected from the cold. They produce light and live in the soil and hunt at night. They feed on insects, snails and slugs. When it captures prey, the larva will inject its meal with digestive enzymes to immobilize it and liquefy its remains. There's very little pest to deal with since their presence. Their habitat protects the soil from evaporation and keeps the soil warm, damp, and roots blanketed. It offers places for birds and mammals to find their snacks. In late spring larva constructs a mud chamber in the soil and lives inside it to begin pupation. So it looks like previous introductions of Ladybugs in and around my grow space have finally paid off with a functioning Colony. Over the last couple days of harvesting ive seen a few larvae and small adult ladybugs in the grow despite not having added any indoors for 4+ months now. Aphids are a common pest in my perennial flower gardens, and realistically theres no real way to keep them out of the house so I regularly add Ladybugs to my flower beds that surround the house. #beneficialbugs #ladybug #ladybeetle #predatorbugs

I've been dealing with some pest pressure, specifically aphids and flea beetles. But I've got tons of beneficial bugs and animals taking care of them for me. Here we have a ladybug larvae working it's way through the Zinnias taking care of the aphid pressure. I've also noticed a fair amount of frogs/toads around the farm that are taking care of the flea beetles. I let nature take its course around the farm, but I also help out nature with planting many different types of flowers, succession planting, and planting trap crops, like Calendulas throughout the farm. Found some Onion Maggots in our purple bunching onions while scouting for pests in the garden 🧐 Damage from the first generation attack usually can be seen in mid-to-late June as wilted onion seedlings (3rd PIc) If you try to pull the wilted plant, it is likely to break just below the rotting stem of the seedling. Quite often the seedling dies before the maggot is full-grown. When this occurs the maggot will move down the row to the next seedling. Onion Maggots can have 3-4 generations per season if left unchecked. Good sanitation is extremely important in controlling the onion maggot, when the pest is detected, the infected crop should be removed from the garden and disposed of off-site. Since we just planted 1000 onions we decided to follow up removal with an application of Entomopathogenic Nematodes Steinernema Feltiae. Nematodes enter the pest and release symbiotic bacteria into the body cavity. These bacteria convert the larval tissue into a food source, on which nematodes feed, develop, and reproduce. The host pest dies within a few hours to days after infection. These predators can be effective control of Onion and Corn Seed maggots, as well as larvae of fungus gnats, shore flies, leafminer, vine weevil, thrips, tomato leafminer, armyworms, corn earworms, tomato looper & cutworms.
