“Mother Love” by Rita Dove Read 5/6/24 As Mother’s Day approaches, I decided to crack open my copy of “Mother Love” by U.S. Poet Laureate (1993-1995) Rita Dove. This collection of poems explores the dynamic between Mother and Daughter through the myth of Demeter and Persephone. Though I am definitely not a professional reviewer I thought I would share my thoughts on this collection for any who come across it. I thoroughly enjoyed my read of “Mother Love” as it bounced between myth and reality, weaving together the different threads to portray the chaotic and loving dynamic often found between mother and daughter. The most poignant part to me was the portrayal of Demeter’s grief at her separation from Persephone and how Dove related that to her own relationships. It was an incredibly well written collection (of course) and the message stayed with me even after I was done reading. If you come across this collection, I would highly recommend it. I am going to try avoiding giving a number review as I feel that each poem had a different effect on me so grouping them all under one number feels unfair. My favorite poem from this collection was personally “Demeter’s Prayer to Hades” (seen above). Now lets talk about the elephant (or should I say kangaroo) in the room. To add to the fun of my reviews I’ve decided to pair each book with a beanie baby from my collection that I feel fits the overall themes or aesthetics of the book (if it’s appropriate, some books are too serious for such beanies). For today’s book, we have Pouch the kangaroo with her baby! Obviously, I had to pick my mama beanie baby to go with this title. One of my purchases during independent bookstore day a couple of weekends ago was Rita Dove's Selected Poems. I had read her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Thomas and Beulah a long time ago, and although this collection contained selections from T&B, I bought it anyway. I can't quite describe the effect that Dove's poetry has on me (hey, that's why it's poetry!), but it's akin to making me believe that dreams are within reach. Rita Dove is an African-American poet. Her poetry collection ‘Mother Love’, published in 1952, is based on the Greek mythological story of Demeter and Persephone. As per the story Persephone is abducted by Hades by successfully tempting her. Demeter the mother goddess is so stricken with grief that she allows the earth to fall to ruins. As she is the goddess of agriculture, her grief causes agriculture to fail and living being to suffer. Ultimately all the other Olympian gods together request Hades to return Persephone which he complies to in the end. But as Persephone has already eaten pomegranate seeds in hell she cannot return permanently as per the divine law, hence she lives in 6- months cycle on earth and in hell. Dove uses the Persephone character to show the plight of African women in particular and all women in general fighting gender hegemony and colonial oppression. Women’s History Month’s Feature: Rita Dove, Poet, Playwright, and Essayist Hello book lovers! In celebration of Women’s History Month, I would like to present to you, poet and essayist, Rita Dove. In 1987, she received the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for Thomas and Beulah, a collection of poems loosely based on the lives of her maternal grandparents. In 1993, she was named United States Poet Laureate by the Library of Congress, a position she held until 1995. She has won several awards and collaborated on many creative projects including a live reading at the Lincoln Memorial, accompanied by John Williams’ music – a poem to Steven Spielberg’s documentary The Unfinished Journey. Some of her other notable works include her play The Darker Face of the Earth that premiered at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon in 1996 and premiered at the Royal National Theatre in London in 1999; her poetry collections - Sonata Mulattica published in 2009 and Playlist for the Apocalypse published in 2021; and various short stories and essays. Poem of the Day: “Teach Us to Number Our Days” by Pulitzer Prize-Winning Poet Rita Dove In the old neighborhood, each funeral parlor is more elaborate than the last. The alleys smell of cops, pistols bumping their thighs, each chamber steeled with a slim blue bullet. Low-rent balconies stacked to the sky. A boy plays tic-tac-toe on a moon crossed by TV antennae, dreams he has swallowed a blue bean. It takes root in his gut, sprouts and twines upward, the vines curling around the sockets and locking them shut. And this sky, knotting like a dark tie? We've been celebrating #BlackHistoryMonth by sharing just a few of the stories of African-American leaders in downtown Akron. Today we celebrate poet, author, teacher, former U.S. Poet Laureate, Pulitzer Prize winner, and 2023 recipient of the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters by the National Book Foundation—AND Akronite—Rita Dove. Examples of Rita Dove's work abound in Akron, including in several physical spaces, like the NIHF STEM Middle School plaza public art space by @boamistura, who worked with @nihfstemakron learners to create the artwork, "The Roots of Rubber," which incorporates 2 lines from her poem, "Dawn Revisited." And, her words adorn the bench located near the Akron Rubber Worker statue, to name just 2 instances.
