Director: Dev Patel Run Time: 2h 3min Genre: Action Monkey Man is a straight-up revenge actioner, a thorough Indian film masquerading as a Hollywood film. It is partly written and produced by Dev Patel. He also makes his directorial debut with this film. The action scenes are genuinely impressive and cool to watch on the big screen. The Indian mythology and the story combined work well but to some extent. It also felt forced into the story and messed up the pacing in the second half. The choice of music works in parts. It's good to see uncensored frames throughout the movie. it's raw and appealing to the story. This may not boast of any repeat value, but for what it's worth, it does make for a decent one-time watch. Allí luchará por buscar venganza por la muerte de su madre y defender a las clases más desfavorecidas.” 🎥 “Monkey Man” ha sido para mi una de las pequeñas decepciones de este 2024. No es que no me haya gustado, es que alomejor le pedía mas al debut de Dev Patel. La película es correcta, tiene muy buenas secuencias de acción y Dev Patel como protagonista funciona. La ambientación está muy bien y los escenarios que presenta son interesantes. Incluso los secundarios están bien. 👊🏽 Mi problema es que narrativamente no me parece una buena película. Para empezar tiene un exceso de flashbacks importante. Y sobretodo el momento “flashback del tercer acto” como diría Deadpool me acabó de hundir. Mas que nada porque es la película que ya has visto mil veces y no me hace falta que me cuentes las cosas tantas veces ni tanto rato. Luego, la escena de persecución con el Tuk Tuk es peor que la Indiana Jones 5 y finalmente si la película se llama Monkey Man y me quieres presentar este especie de héroe vengador urbano indio con un concepto que parecía una mierda pero que en la película mola, no le quites la máscara antes de la traca de acción final. Sé que Dev Patel lo ha hecho para enseñar la carita y que veamos que es él el que está haciendo todas esas escenas de acción, pero la película se llama Monkey Man; y yo quiero ver al mono. AH si, y me trago cualquier cosa menos que un señor con heridas de bala se caiga al p*** Ganges y salga de allí entero. 🤮 “Monkey Man” cumple con la acción pero defrauda en lo más importante, el drama humano que es el que tiene que hacerte empatizar y meterte con el protagonista hasta las trancas. I am a massive action fan and grew up watching the classic action movies and this was a really good one. It has a good revenge story that revolves around a young man who witnesses her mother's murder in such a brutal fashion, so he grows up with that determination to get justice and make those responsible pay. Honestly i got a John Wick vibe, with some 80s action movie vibes thrown in there too and the return of the classic training montage!. They are such a great part of action movies and i love that Dev put it in, it was such a badass scene too!. Also i loved that it blended action and drama in such a brilliant way. It never falls into the over the top action or not enough action categories and is just the perfect amount. With the scenes between the action building the reasoning for it so well. I really liked the journey that we go on with the main character too, as you expect a John Wick style going in that he's just going to be able to take on everyone, but the movie goes a different route with it. Where it emphasises the training aspect to get him ready to take them all on, so when it comes you know you are going to see all out action and it was glorious!. I also have to give a mention to the cinematography and soundtrack, it blended together so well and really pulls you into the movie getting you hyped for the action sequences. Standouts - Dev Patel, he was brilliant in this role and portrayed the character so well, not just the action moments but the genuine emotional moments too!. Also the fact he directed this!, If you never knew going in it was his first time, you'd never be able to tell, it was directed really well!. Bottom line, a really good action film, with lots of heart too, meaning the action sequences hit harder because of the emotion behind them. Watch in Cinema. What did you think?

Dev Patel's MONKEY MAN is one of the coolest grounded action films I've seen in a while. With the rated R rating Dev Patel makes sure to make the movie as brutal and gory as he can. The striking colors and stark angles elevate the incredible choreography. The sound design makes each punch and stab be felt. There were so many great editing and camerawork choices that elevated this film above the standard, visually. The first hour of this movie was phenomenal but then it comes to a pretty gruelling halt in the 2nd act which made it lose a lot of its momentum. So what can’t #devpatel do? A great actor and now a very promising director. I had so much fun watching #monkeyman, and it went in a direction I really wasn’t expecting it to. Showing off the beauty of India but also very real and deep rooted issues the country is going through. And to take the risk of putting a spotlight on India’s queer community, specifically the Trans issues they’ve been having really shocked me. I’m so happy with where this movie went and how it unfolded. The action was pretty solid, just wish there had been more of it. I also wish the final fight was longer with a bit more of a satisfying ending. Of course Patel is great here, turning himself into the next hot action star. #pitobash is one of those great side characters that doesn’t get as much screen time as they deserve. #sikanderkher and #makranddeshpande are underdeveloped but solid villains, just so evil it’s easy to hate them. This looked really great on an IMAX screen and as great as the theater experience was for it, I don’t think a trip to the theater is necessary. It’s worth a trip but I think it’ll be just as good at home. “Monkey Man” is a lot of fun that I can’t see anyone genuinely disliking. Monkey Man Well, that was some directorial debut! I think Dev Patel has a future in running a film and kicking ass in a film. It starts off quite well and then kinda slows down in the middle to end of a pretty good note. I did loose some interest, but it does not take away from his talent as a director. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare This has to be the most handsome cast ever brought together for a film based on a true story. BASED is the strong word because, well, it’s a Guy Ritchie film and he always has a way of making it overblown and yet pretty entertaining. Monkey Man. Well tbh I was excited for this movie. I was waiting for its theatrical release in India but the release is delayed or maybe it might not be released in India. From today onwards it's available for US prime video users. I know everyone has their sources to watch it for free 😉. Disclaimer : Before talking about the movie, I will not highlight the reason for which the release in India was delayed (ig everyone knows :) ). This movie is all about the revenge story. I was excited for the action scenes but only 2 action sequences are there in the movie which were good. The movie was slow in between but the action blocks were brutal and high on intensity. Dev Patel's dedication is outstanding. As a director, producer, writer and the lead actor he was quite good tbh. I would love to watch more of his works in the future. I won't believe it if you would tell me that this film is made by a Debutant Director. A Spectacular feat on Dev Patel's part. What an Amazing Film this guy has made, he went all in. Monkey Man is Bonkers man, the fights, the shots, the visuals, all are a treat to the eyes. Dev Patel beautifully captured the essence of India showing just what it is, he didn't held his hand back at all in showing both the ugly and beautiful sides of the country, the same which applies for all the places in the world. He didn't exaggerate a bit excluding few of the fictional parts of the plot. This film comes nowhere near to the speculations and rumours i heard online about it, rather it uplifts and celebrates the traditions, the idols, the people and showcases the culture of our country through such an honest and beautiful lens. It saddens me when good films like this don't get the appreciation and recognition from the box office that they deserve. More than the great performance he gave, i was immensely taken aback by the fascinating sense of storytelling this man inculcates. I would love to see him direct more films in the future. The Editing, Sound and the incredible Stunt Choreography complimented each other so well along with the brilliantly way it was shot. The camera work was so fine and detailed. The lighting is chef's kiss. Hats Off to Jordan Peele for backing such a film like this, when a name like that gets attached to your film, it must give you so much pride and confidence and gratitude. And it was also such a nice surprise to see all those hidden or small references to our pop culture, and to see such a staggering cast full of such amazing actors of our country. Monkey Man (2024) I find it really cool that “Monkey Man” is a passion project that was starring, directed, written, and produced by Dev Patel. He certainly poured the full scale of his efforts into making this a respectable piece of action cinema. “Monkey Man” is the newest thrilling action movie to grace the big screen with some sprawling sets and extreme choreography. A lot of Patel’s creative decisions with this movie are centered on how the protagonist is constructed. His journey through the underbelly of this city, dismantling a deep rooted criminal empire, is paired brilliantly with the mythic tales of Hanuman. This is a strong approach to world-building, but the development of Patel’s protagonist is the core of this film’s appeal. Patel gives a remarkable performance, especially seen with his action stunt-work. The incorporated shaky handheld is used to a mostly effective degree, but the successes of these scenes display the impacts of each hit and, in their own way, portray this spiritual journey that the Monkey Man goes through. There’s a conveyed sense of anger, vengeance, and pent-up adrenaline within Monkey Man that explodes through the stunt work and cinematography. Between this and other major action movies, I appreciated how attentive “Monkey Man” is to cultivating a meaningful story with meaningful characters. For Dev Patel’s major directorial debut, he nails the aesthetic for this film. The guerrilla style of cinematography meshes with the motions of the actors and extras fluidly. Looking into it, I like how Patel could incorporate a diverse set of cameras and filmmaking techniques to accomplish this. There is some effective use of lighting in certain scenes and an impressive display of production design. I did think the pacing took time to find traction in the earlier moments of the movie. I am also unsure of my feelings towards how “Monkey Man” ends, and, without spoilers, it takes an approach that didn’t land within the context of this story. “Monkey Man” is a totally bananas movie, and I appreciate Dev Patel’s efforts to make such an exhilarating movie. 8.7/10
Hanuman, like Prometheus, challenged the gods & was punished for it. He is the #MonkeyMan & he swallowed the sun, only to be struck down. Whether Kid #DevPatel is in fact Hanuman or merely using the legend is unclear. What we do know is that he’s on a mission. As a child, his mom was killed by the chief of police Rana #SikanderKher. It was part of a raid on orders from Baba Shakti #MakrandDeshpande. The latter is positioning himself for leadership in India. So, the revenge of the now grown boy is a thorn no 1 wants. By day, he fights in underground brawls, wearing a monkey mask. He is the designated loser, but it shows the amount of punishment he’s capable of taking. At night, he’s scammed his way into working at a club that caters to the elite, aka his targets. Unlike the #JohnWick #movies, this is not a wall to wall action set piece. It builds to 1 action set piece, that doesn’t go as planned. Kid has to rebuild himself & try again in the finale. When we get them, the fight scenes are kinetic & raw. Where the #film struggles is in explanation of the Indian political system, which is key to the plot, especially the final boss level. As an outsider, I got a sense of it, but clearly there’s more trying to be said than I understood. As an #actionmovie, it’s satisfying though. I’ve been watching Dev’s work since #Skins & he keeps getting better. He’s behind the camera here too, as director & he does a good job of it. Patel opts for a somewhat dirty visual style with a lot of plot, which adds its own personality to the story. The flashbacks are the negative element of the film as they are rather repetitive and take away from the rhythm of the final montage with a somewhat perplexing conclusion. Some parts of it, which included the flashback scenes, dragged on and felt a little repetitive, but overall this is a very good movie which felt original and set in an Indian city. So, the new location and different scenery, plus the very good soundtrack as well as the fight scenes, made for an exciting movie experience. Until now, I had not seen Dev Patel as an action hero, but he really was excellent in it. Also, I liked that it had a bit of story rather than just mindless fight scenes. It is a violent movie so if that bothers you then this may not be your cup of tea. I look forward to watching what Dev Patel does next. Kudos to him for coming up with an original story. Whether you like Dev Patel’s work on not, there’s really no denying that he’s always drawn himself more towards films with strong artistic integrity. His ambitions in that are evident here more than ever in his directorial debut. For starters, this is arguably the most physically demanding role he’s ever taken & he absolutely flourishes in it. While the structure for revealing information is not always perfect, the motivations for the character’s goals & growth are felt & help build to a thrilling third act. The action sequences are highly engaging, although not always fully legible from a visual standpoint. There are some really great shots throughout this movie, but they also come with the overuse of shaky cam, close ups, dark lighting, & quick cut editing. From a construct, this is a movie that takes a lot of risks. It doesn’t always pan out perfectly, but there’s no denying that there’s a litter of creative ambition behind the camera. It’s those moments that do pay off in spectacular fashion that supersede any prior shortcomings. There are parts of the second act that do drag on a bit, but generally this movie is consistently engaging. This is a movie that clearly takes inspiration from some of the better action flicks of recent years. It doesn’t quite hit it out of the park, but it still swings big & makes enough contact to raise some eyebrows. An impressive feat of a directorial debut from Dev Patel on a technical level, certainly, though Monkey Man’s second half is far superior to its first. 7/10 ⚠️ SPOILERS BEGIN BELOW ⚠️ The choreography is rather impressive throughout the film. It’s a shame the camerawork during the first half of the movie nearly disguises it, though. Honestly, at points, it comes off as visually messy. That said, the action is well paced and manages to still be fairly exciting, and there’s an argument to be made that the change in cinematography is emblematic of the state of Bobby’s character (I know that’s not his real name, by the way, but I need something to refer to him by). Additionally, the soundtrack can be quite random. It has a cohesive sound, for the most part, but the songs they chose to use rarely feel like they fit lyrically speaking. It felt, at times, like Patel wanted to rush the audience into the action as quickly as he could, because he kind of skips the setup in the first act. In some sense, the full setup not coming until the midpoint works to create intrigue, but I think this is also to the film’s detriment, as it can be a bit difficult to connect with Bobby’s character during the first act. There are some interesting smaller beats, like him saving a few children during action sequences, but that gets dropped later on anyway. This is part of why I think the film shines so much more in its second half. Patel, for some reason, really stepped up his game for the final act in nearly all departments. It’s also interesting to see the film go from a typical revenge flick to leaning more into rebellion against a tyrannical government. All of this is to say that Monkey Man has the makings of something special, but I found the final product less cohesive than it should have been. There’s clearly passion here, and I respect that to no end, but Patel needs to focus it.

Dev Patel does a decent job in front & behind the camera for "Monkey Man" & it's perfectly fine, but it does nothing to set itself apart from other titles in the action genre after all the talking. Take away the good supporting cast, there's no memorable standout moments as the action is a mixture of good bloody mayhem & mostly being held back by nauseating camera work. The first act is the strongest, it mixes up the action by giving a great sense of the city which looks great when capturing the difference between social class & life on the streets with the communication & community between the people. It all slows down in the middle where it becomes a spiritual journey of healing & self recovery, but my big issue at the point comes with the storytelling relying too much on flashbacks hammering home the point of revenge. Monkey Man is the directorial of actor Dev Patel, and I have to say that this film absolutely won me over. I am usually not a fan of action films but Monkey Man not only has great action, but it is also surprisingly contemplative and deeply cultural. Additionally, this is some of the best action I have seen. It is brutal and gruesome to the point of evoking audible responses from my audience. Also, the way that the camera movements and editing of the action scenes evolves with the protagonist is genuinely unique. The protagonist is played by Dev Patel who excels as both the leading man and director of Monkey Man. The cinematography, editing, production design, and sound design are all mesmerizing and beautiful. However, this film’s script does get a little bit messy and even though it comes together very well on a thematic level in many regards, it also comes up short in other ways. For every action film with even a silver of juice in its veins and energy to burn, we get one so passionate in its craft, ambitious with the chaos it provides and so overstuffed with messy, tasty quality, that you just can’t help but cheer it along despite all its shortcomings. 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐤𝐞𝐲 𝐌𝐚𝐧 is one of those movies. I know this sounds cliche to say but man oh man, did Dev Patel LITERALLY pour everything, his entire self into directing this. How each scene maneuvers from one set-piece to the next manifests this unruly, agitated undertone of annoyance; actively showcasing his love for the action genre through beauty through pain. And from the way he captures that understanding of pulsing and kinetic to quietly moving impulse with pride, this does not feel like his first time. World-building does just enough to vaguely incorporate the backdrop of Mumbai as a character in its own right, meaning a healthy enough blend of modern Western and Indian aesthetics in the production design, even if the Westernized style can often win out much to my annoyance. There’s something generally beautiful about cultural juxtaposition when different cultures can come together and the fact that it continues to remain spiritually and visually experimental the longer the film goes on captures the spirit of each its locales. No amount of harsh overhead lighting can shake the shadowy atmosphere of the venues or the interspersed whisper-laden rawness of its own presentation and its stylized approach with keeping the camera loose and fluid to match the razor-sharp intensity of the extended action sequences does wonders for both the editing and Sharone Mier’s cinematography…..despite the dreaded shaky-cam reappearing and mucking up the otherwise solid fight choreography. There’s a restlessness to the manner of pacing the story moves at and not in a bad way; it matches the physical or mental exhaustion of both the hero’s plight and the more-than-acceptable runtime. Costumes are deftly designed and appropriate, it’s reputable R-rating is both satisfying and brutish to boot, you got robust sound design up the wahzoo and an eclectically poppy OST. “Monkey Man” is a massive mixed bag. The story is oddly structured and the action in the first half was shot in a way that gave me a minor headache, but the second half sees that action get stronger. Dev Patel is a good lead, but the people he’s after weirdly weren’t hateable enough for their deaths to be as cathartic as intended. Ashwini Kalsekar is also fun as a secondary villain. I liked it well enough for the good stuff. 3/5
