All 162 sunflowers have been “squared off”. The next step is to sew in all the ends: 2 for each flower, 364 total. I have 43 all white squares made with ends sewn in, another 23 made, and another 95 that I still have to make. Then, after that, I have to block them, sew them together, and then put a border around them to make a blanket. I could’ve finished this book in one sitting, but managed to stretch it out over three days because I knew that as soon as I finished it, I’d be left feeling like I just said goodbye to an old friend…you know, the kind that blows into town every couple of years like a tornado of chaos and leaves a path of destruction in their wake. And I’m happy to clean up the mess, to be left sitting in stunned silence staring up at the ceiling with a goofy smile on my face trying to figure it all out. I’m thinking I might have to go back to the very beginning to piece it all together but I don’t mind one bit because Alex Michaelides is one of those authors that makes me grateful to be a reader.
Ahhhhhh it happened! I can’t say what it is, or even where in the book it is because I don’t want to spoil it, but ahhh!!! I could finish this book today, but I also just want to luxuriate in this moment, savor it for as long as possible. The hat and scarf were gifts I made for my work Galentine’s day gift exchange using the @seastarcrochet Sea Star Bay beanie pattern. Though I’ve been crocheting for years, I still consider myself a beginner, especially when it comes to reading patterns. I found this pattern easy to follow, and more than pleased with the results. Last year’s Christmas books (both gifted and purchased). I’ve read all but one (Mad Woman in the Attic) which I’m quite proud of myself for. This year’s haul is a little bigger so we’ll see how it goes. My favorites were John Green’s The Anthropocene Reviewed and Brandon Sanderson’s Words of Radiance. Dave Grohl’s Storyteller is also at the top of the list. My least favorite was Verity by Colleen Hoover. My Barnes and Noble post-Christmas book haul. I shall admit that I was (and still am) a bit upset that the sale wasn’t the same this year as it was last year. The sale was previously 50% off all hard covers and board games (I am a board game lover so I was really looking forward to this and sad when it wasn’t part of the sale). This year the sale is 33% off all hard covers, plus 10% more if you’re a rewards member, $20 in rewards for every $50 spent (on hardcovers), plus you still earn stamps like you normally would towards rewards. They also price match their online prices. So if the book was listed as 50% off online, they adjusted the price in store (upon request). Here’s my breakdown: $272 original cost. I spent $150. If they were all 50% off (like last year’s sale), it would’ve cost $136. So out of pocket cost was about $14 more. Now, if I understand the “rules” of this sale correctly, I will earn $60 in rewards (which will appear on my account after this sale is over), and I’ve already earned $10 for the stamps generated from the purchase. So yes maybe it worked out better for me in the end. I’ll have a fair bit of rewards money to make future purchases with, but I still prefer the previous sale. The extra benefits that make the sale ‘worth it’ are only offered to members and somehow that just doesn’t seem fair, idk. I feel like everyone deserves access to bookish joy. There were less than half the amount of people in the store this year than there were last year. Reader Math: I paid $21 for these six books between the Friends of the Library Sale and the bookstore proper. That averages out to $3.50 per book which is basically free. On top of that, proceeds from the sale go towards saving the library. So I made a donation to the library, and was gifted these books as a symbol of their gratitude. Therefore I spent zero dollars on books yesterday, and helped save a local business. Have y’all ever been reading a book that was about something big, bad and terrible, but couldn’t keep the smile off your face because the writing was just so good? That was me after listening to the audiobook of Ring Shout by P. Djèlí Clark. It’s been three days, and I still can’t wipe the grin off my face any time I think about it. It just blows my mind that we all have access to the same letters, the same words and some people build mountains with them while others paint the Sistine Chapel. Now the writing aside (and maybe this should’ve been a separate post, but I only took one picture), the audiobook narrator, Channie Waites deserves her flowers too. She didn’t just narrate this book, she read it like her life depended on it. I listened with my hand over my mouth half the time, just in awe of how incredible she is. She is now on my list of dream narrators if I ever finish writing my book. Do yourself a favor and listen to something that she’s narrated. The first step of reading my own writing was of course putting the pages in a binder with a cat face on it, and then marking each chapter with a kitty cat stickie note. There are about fifty altogether. Somehow I feel as though this was an essential task without which I would not have been able to proceed. It took a lot longer than you might think, but I feel like it was time well spent. I’ve started and stopped writing so many times that I feel like I’ve lost some of the details, especially the smaller ones. So I decided to print it all out and read what I’ve written so far. I plan to take a few notes about where the characters are and what they’re doing, create a small outline I guess, but I’m promising myself that will not edit not one single tiny little word. I know what the end is and I feel like I’m approaching it, but I also feel like I’m no where close to being finished. At this point the characters have a mind of their own, and are running around getting themselves involved in all kinds of shenanigans. I love reading stories set in Philly, but this one missed the mark for me. It was interesting enough, but I didn’t feel like the narrator herself was connected to the story which made it difficult for me to feel connected to her. It felt more like she was telling the story as if she was hovering outside of it instead of right in the middle of it. I was also hoping for more of a resolution with a couple of the subplots. On a positive note, I loved the O’Brien family. Some of the writing was really beautiful, but I didn’t much care for how the book was structured. There were lot of different points of view, and the way that they were thrown in there felt a bit haphazard at times. They felt like more of a distraction than they did an additional layer of mystery. Edwin and Go-Go were by far the most interesting characters out of all of them. By the end I didn’t care much about the victim or her sister at all (both of whom were situated as the main characters). Just goes to show that there can be people that don’t like your book, or think that it was just okay, and it still gets put up on the big screen. A fairytale mash-up presented King style. I enjoyed it except for a few things that I found a little irksome. Half the time when presented with a new fairytale (i.e. Little Red Riding Hood’s story would start to emerge), he’d say, “You know, like Little Red Riding Hood”. As if he didn’t trust the reader to make the connection this world he had created. Also, he made a lot of references to real life things in our actual world outside of books, and every time he did I felt like I got pulled out of the ‘fairytale’. It was a little disorienting. Otherwise, a good read. Alright, so, the thing that I thought was going to happen did not happen…but it could have and we just weren’t told about it. It almost felt to me like the author left the window open for it to happen, but removed it as a point of editing down to the core of the story. It would’ve shifted the focus away from the marriage which is, after all, what this book is about. I can only hope that one day someone enjoys my work enough to spend five pages picking apart One. Single. Sentence. It’s fascinating how much meaning one person can garner from a finite set of words situated between a set of punctuation marks. As interesting as I found this book, I should say that it may have been more appropriately titled “25 Sentences and Why I Think They’re Great”. It was more of an in depth examination of how authors use not just words but also the structure of a sentence to create meaning, rather than an exposé of the editorial process (which is what I was expecting based on the title). Nonetheless, definitely worth the read for any writer friends out there or anyone that has an interest in craft books. I have never heard someone use so many adverbs, one after the other, consecutively, in a row. The reverence for this book is questionable at best. None of the characters had even the smallest degree of likability. While some of the passages were poetic, whatever redemption they may have offered is washed out by the combination of overt racism and meandering purple prose. #Broken by #JennyLawson is a deep, often hilarious, insider’s look at what it’s like to live with anxiety and depression. Going down her thought spirals with her had be begging her to stop, and just get on with the story because it was triggering my own anxiety. Then I remembered all the times I’ve been down those roads myself, and how hard it is to stop the thoughts from spinning out of control. And that’s really the whole point of the book, to let you see what it looks like from the inside. I felt like it was an authentic perspective of some very common mental health issues that can sometimes be difficult to explain to people that have never experienced them. Reading outside is my happy place. But I’m a bit of a Sensitive Sally when it comes to reading while music (or the TV) is playing. My brain will not let me process two sets of words at the same time. (Shout out to the people that can do this because it’s a superpower I wish I had). Hence why I find it exceptionally annoying when someone disrupts the silence that I was previously enjoying by playing their music out loud in a communal space. It takes me completely out of the world that I was sucked into. I lose focus, and end up reading the same passage seven times because I have no idea what I just read. AirPods Pro (along with the dulcet tones provided by the Calm App) have been my saving grace this pool season. Their noise cancelling is beyond anything I’ve ever experienced to the point that it’s a little disorienting when you take them out. You can actually feel the noises of the world fade away as soon as you put them in your ears.
