Deadly Animals by Marie Tierney. 1981, South Birmingham. In a sleepy little town, lives Ava Bonelly. Ava has a little secret. For a thirteen year old, she actually loves to observe roadkills and is utterly fascinated with complexities of animal decomposition. One morning, in the wee hours, as she was making her way out to her little 'body farm', she found the Mickey Grant. Fourteen year old Mickey had been missing for two weeks and the discovery of his dead body kickstarted a gruesome murder spree of little boys. Attacked viciously by what looks like a canine. Though these killings were definitely not done by dogs. I picked this e-copy on a whim after browsing through NLB's new ebooks list. And boy, was I glad I did! Firstly, let me just say this was one long-ass story. But was it a good long-ass story that got me gripped, biting on my cuticles and wincing at the grisly details? Yes, it most certainly was! There were five parts to this, stretching out the murders and investigations that spanned about a year. This was not an in your face fast paced thriller. Clues were not as straightforward, suspects were a plenty, complications and questions arise more than them getting answered. With Ava secretly also sleuthing to help solve catch this serial killer, along with her best friend. I loved Ava so so much. What a character! Young female protagonist that kicks ass with their beautiful smart brains! Eventhough she was brought up in a difficulty family environment, nothing stopped Ava from being street and book smart. Well learned, even the detectives tipped their hats to her! Especially at a time where kids are usually brushed off and ignored, i loved how the detectives really took notice and paid attention to Ava. She was such a marvellously presented character in an otherwise very morose and morbid story. TBC 👇🏽 ...

Book Review: “The Bump” by Sidney Karger ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 Sometimes you find the right book to fit your mood. For me, the most recent example of this is Sidney Karger’s upcoming new book, “The Bump.” It hit me square in the feels and left me smiling, too. Wyatt and Biz have been together for a number of years now. Wyatt is a director of commercials; Biz, a former child actor, is now a food writer. Wyatt is the high-strung planner; Biz is the more spontaneous, fun-loving one. The couple lives in Brooklyn with their dog, Matilda. But everything is about to change for them. They’re having a baby (through a surrogate) in a few weeks, and both are getting pretty tense. Biz decides that instead of flying to California for the baby’s birth, they’ll drive, making a few stops on the way so it’s kind of a “baby-moon.” (Biz is starting to panic, so he hopes the road trip will calm him down.) In their old VW convertible, they start their journey in Provincetown, the scene of many great memories for them. But Wyatt feels like Biz is trying to avoid becoming a father, while Biz wishes Wyatt would just mellow out a bit. The tension makes it hard to enjoy, and then their plans go awry when an emergency with Wyatt’s family necessitates a detour. Each time they try to get back on course, something else happens which causes another detour. And at the same time, secrets are revealed and discoveries are made which ratchet up both of their emotions, not to mention the tension between them. Can their family survive before it even starts? While much of the drama in the book would be solved if Wyatt and Biz would just TALK to each other, the miscommunication didn’t bother me as much as it usually does. They make an adorable couple, and I really was rooting for them, plus I enjoyed the supporting characters as well. The book was a good mix of serious and silly, romantic and fun. Long Time Gone by Charlie Donlea ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 Thank you @kensingtonbooks and @netgalley for this eARC. I have mixed feelings about Long Time Gone. On one hand, it certainly had you turning the pages and it was well paced. On the other hand, however, there were too many times when things were conveniently in place, whether it be the character/s or location. But by main disappointment, was when the killer's motive was revealed. I will try not to give spoilers here... considering what the actual motive was - which was very short (couple sentences only), you would have expected there to have been clues and hints throughout the book. Hello friends, welcome back! Book 15 of 2024 Have you read the 7 1/2 deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle? No? Well, it's a book written on an interesting concept. How can I explain this book? It's like Groundhogs Day meets CLUE. Don't think those things go together, I assure you, they do. There are things that surprised me about the book, like the fact that it was written in 2018, but definitely feels like a novel that had been written in the mid-20th century (at the LATEST). This author was new to me but I will definitely be reaching for more of his novels in the near future. I have read a lot of books there time frame can confuse the readers, this book does a fantastic job with keeping the readers interest but also keep them on track so that time frames aren’t confusing. So many twist in this book, and they all made perfect sense and kept the plot flowing perfectly. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I had to sit with this one for a few days after finishing because Divine Rivals is a very tough act to follow. I found the pacing in this a little slow and I couldn’t quite understand why Dacre was so obsessed with Iris and Roman. That said, I did enjoy the duology and loved the concept of the magically linked typewriters. I wish we had learned a little more about Enva and that the meeting with Dacre had a little more to it. It felt like looking through a keyhole. The prose is achingly beautiful in parts. However, the constant change in perspective without warning was hard to keep up with. I also felt like it was so heavily contextualised that a lot of the original meaning may have been lost in the almost 100 years since this has been written. ✏️ . . "Such are the visions which proffer great cornucopias full of fruit to the solitary traveller, or murmur in his ear like sirens lolloping away on the green sea waves, or are sashes in his face like bunches of roses, or rise to the surface like pale faces which fishermen flounder through floods to embrace." 💬 . . Mrs Dalloway felt as much a stranger at the end as she did at the start, with the surrounding characters getting a lot more time. However, is this because it's Mrs Dalloway's perspective? However, the excellent introduction and notes from @penguinclassics always helps me understand and contextualise these titles. They certainly helped me understand how Woolf was trying to deconstruct the entire concept of the "novel" as it was known, and rebuild it the way she wanted to. . . "... I’ve never considered myself much of a romance reader but after this I may have to broaden my horizons. This book was so much fun! It reads like a 1920’s noir but takes place in a future where we’ve successfully colonized the galaxy. Imagine flapper girls in zero gravity and tell me you’re not intrigued. The writing was honestly what hooked me. Ruth’s voice comes thru so clearly with language that is so colorful and candid you can’t help but feel like your with bestie giggling over cocktails. The author does an amazing job of world building through out the narrative in a way I like to describe storytelling versus explaining. It just flows naturally. The romance aspect was enemies to lovers, filled with witty banter, and leaves you on the edge of your seat waiting for the moment they realize how their relationship has evolved. I loved every minute of it. If you enjoy fun, light hearted, sapphic romance with a noir feel, I highly recommend you adding this read to your TBR. Einen wirklich roten Faden gibt es nicht, aber vielleicht soll es genau so sein (?). Es sind kurze Kapitel mit den unterschiedlichsten Themen: Rückblicke in sein eigenes Leben, Notizen oder auch allgemeine Erkenntnisse, sowie Geschichten aus seiner Zeit als Strafverteidiger. Diese Geschichten/ Ereignisse bringen einen zum Nachdenken, zeigen auch eine andere Sicht auf das Leben und können einen auch schockieren (hat es mich zumindest). Manche Leser*innen meinten sogar, dass einige Geschichten sie zum schmunzeln oder lachen gebracht hatten, das kann ich nicht sagen. Ich fand die meisten Geschichten ziemlich dunkel. 🙈 An sich ist das Buch okay; 😊 es ist nicht schlecht, aber auch kein Lesehighlight für mich.
