Meet the book stack(s) under my work-desk, and or, the one of many book piles that (artfully) enhance the quiet academia of our home(?). Frankly, it is vital to me, a busy working parent-and-home educator to have the things I love most easily accessible, so, here we are: books, books, and my binoculars. Not quite pictured: sketchbook, paint palette, various writing tools. Excited to dig into Castillo’s book this weekend, as I plan to dedicate this time to some ‘reading about reading.’ Pretty sure only you friendly fellow book folks would grasp this concept (reading…about how to read?), and I am grateful for you. #bookstack

Just finished my second read through of this gem of a book about writing. If you fancy yourself a dabbler in the art of stringing words together to tell stories, I’d definitely put this at the top of your list. It’s one that I can see myself going back to over and over again. #SaveTheCat #SaveTheCatWritesANovel #JessicaBrody #WhyDunIt #ReRead #AmReading #CurrentRead #ReadingRecommendations #BookRecs #BooksAboutWriting #ReadingAboutWriting #NonFiction #WritingAdvice #ShouldBeWriting #Shelfie #WriterGram #WritersOfInstagram #Writer #FutureBestSellingAuthor #ReadReadRead #WriteWriteWrite #Bookstagram #BookstgramPhilly #Bibliophile #ReaderLife #WritingCommunity #WritingInspiration #Reader #ReadersOfInstagram #WellReadGinger

Happy Easter from me, and my not so Eastery post!! I don’t have anything that can represent Easter so here we are. It’s Easter Sunday, the very epitome of ‘the day of rest’, so that’s what we’re gonna do. As usual I have about 50 books on the go at the same time, but today I’m focusing on these 2. On Writing is a non-fiction about how Stephen King came to be an author and tips on how to do it yourself. The Secrets of Strangers is yet another re-read for me. I gave this 5 stars the first time round. This evening, I’ll be hopping 🐰 over to my parents for a Sunday roast, but other than that, I have no plans today at all, and I’m very happy about it. #happyeaster #eastersunday #sundayvibes #sunday #reading #readingandrelaxing #readingaboutwriting #booktography #itsmehiimtheproblemitsme #bookandabrew #wantedtopostsomething #books #bookstagram #fiction #nonfiction #multiplebooks #stephenking #onwriting #thesecretsofstrangers #charitynorman Side note: how cute is this song I added to the post 🐰🐰🐰 xXx

“Your mind is a machine for rendering reality, but it’s full of bugs and glitches that tend to jank everything up.” I may not necessarily be much of a writer, but I still love reading essays about writing. Charlie Jane Anders did a series during the height of the pandemic about writing, and while the whole series is still available for free online from reactormag (then tor.com) I was quite happy to get my hands on a hardcopy version. These essays cover things from small practical tips on motivation, character, and content to ethical dilemmas on what you are writing. If you’ve ever wanted to talk about the writing process with someone, then I would definitely say these essays are for you. Books that are tangentially about books for the win! For the Trans Rights Readathon I’m fundraising for a local trans organization in Pittsburgh called Sisters - check out the link in my bio to donate. If you send me a screenshot of your donation I will match it up to the first $100. #transrightsreadathon #neversayyoucantsurvive #charliejaneanders #essaybooks #writingadvice #booksbooksbooks #bookstagram #nonfiction #transbooks #tordotcom #readingaboutwriting #bookworm #bookreview

Work has hit me like a landslide, slowing me down on other things. I’m still only at the start of this but enjoying it so far. I’ve honestly never read much of Stephen King’s work but I like his voice and his direct style. So far, this reads as an autobiography with little tid bits like this one poking up every now and then. #currentread #readingaboutwriting #bookish #reading #2024reads #onwriting #writingjourney #booksta #bookstagram #reader #books #read #currentreads #quotesonwriting

a little non-fiction reading wrap-up 📚 In an attempt to reduce the books on my owned-tbr by the end of the year I've made some good progress with some of the few non-fiction I own. 🌟ATOMIC HABITS. Possibly my favorite of the four. There were a lot of tips I had heard reiterated elsewhere, but I still walked away with a lot of tips I could apply. It felt like a life changing book packaged to small, manageable tidbits. I added tabs and post-its at the end of every chapter with a little summary of what I learned. I plan to review before the end of the year and maybe set some goals of initiating at few at the start of the new year. Highly recommend. ✍️SAVE THE CAT. I've read the beat sheet (and made a few of my own). I expected for this book to be a bit repetitive, but I was delightfully surprised by how much I learned and how many ideas it inspired for my writing. I'm off to update my own beat sheets and fill them out for a few of my favorite books. 📓BIRD BY BIRD. Another book on writing with advice interwoven with an almost memoir style. Lamott introduces the book as a written account of a writing class she teaches and by the end I did feel like she was one of my favorite teachers. 🎧THE WAGER. The tagline promises shipwreck, mutiny, and murder and has a gorgeous cover. I was very excited to read it. I struggle with audiobooks and I tried to only listen to this one when I could give it most of my attention (i.e. walks with Whinnie and driving) but ... this never grabbed my attention. I got to 65% before my audio loan was returned to the library but I don't think I will pick it back up. If you think this sounds good can I suggest IN THE HEART OF THE SEA instead? I listened to that one on audio years ago and would love to listen to it again. Highly recommend. 👉🏼My goal is <50 books on my owned-tbr by the end of the year. Do you think this is a high or low number? #nataliebookreview #nonfictionreads #readingmytbr #readingaboutwriting #audiobooks

If you're in the Charlotte area, join @joneswilson_cpa and me at the Silent Book Club on October 5 from 6-8pm. It's hosted by @thatsnovelbooks in Camp North End. I visited for the first time a few weeks ago and enjoyed it so much that I plan to make it a regular part of my schedule. It's super chill and no pressure: it actually is *silent* so you don't have to talk unless you choose to chat/network with people at the end. You also get the @campnorthend vibe in the background, so that's always a plus. I used Silent Book Club as a reason to catch up on my professional TBR list, and I hate that I waited so long to finally start The Subversive Copy Editor. Carol Fisher Saller's book has been on my shelf for ages, and she had me chuckling and making notes. I'm excited to put Saller's suggestions into practice for my next project so that the writer— and ultimately the reader— can benefit. . . . . #whatimreading #amreading #silentbookclub #thesubversivecopyeditor #carolfishersaller #cmos #chicagostyle #book #books #bookstagram #bookworm #booknerd #read #reading #readingaboutwriting #editor #editors #amediting #editing #editorlife #copyedit #copyeditor #proofreader #booksaboutwriting #writer #writing #editorforhire

✨The Wrong Calamity - Book Review✨ • An intimate and compellingly honest memoir of a woman coming into her own after profound pain and grief. • Marsha Jacobson agreed to marry a secretive and controlling man because she saw no way out. He compelled her to move to Japan with him, where a chance meeting led to a job at the Tokyo headquarters of Mattel Toys. As she became successful, her husband became more abusive. When they were back in America, she grabbed their two toddlers and escaped from him chased by police. Years later, she had a successful career and a joyful second marriage-until terrible memories her husband buried in childhood came to get him. His PTSD and flashbacks shattered her marriage, her career, and many friendships. With penetrating insight and writing that moves from gritty to glorious, Marsha gives voice to the often-misunderstood lived experience of loss and grief and explores how trauma spreads from generation to generation and person to person but need not last a lifetime. • Review -> Exploring super difficult topics, the Author has courageously penned her life story while throwing light on how her traumas shaped her and her relationships. With a difficult and neglected upbringing, Marsha has done her best to not pass on her traumas to her kids. She pauses several times in the book to share her reflections and how everything that happened to her both helped and hurt her. • She talks about her struggle with body image, self confidence, finding her place and rediscovering herself. The effect all this had on her body and her journey to pulling herself out of her medical complications are nothing short of inspiring. It takes bravery to share such a story & immense skill to make the reader feel the story - to the Brave skilled Author who wrote this book👏👏 • “Love had come neither quickly nor smoothly, but once we had it, there was glory in it, and that was the abundant generosity of spirit between us.” • Thank you Marsha Jacobson & RedCloverDigital for sending this my way! The book comes out on October 18th & you can find the link to pre-order in my bio. • Do you enjoy reading memoirs?

I often do a lot of reading for work. While many of these types of books can be kind of a slog, I do occasionally run into some accessible ones. The Glamour of Grammar is composed of 50 bite-sized lessons on the effective usage of language. They are grouped into various categories, from simpler to more complex: words, points (punctuation), standards, meaning, and purpose. Each lesson ends with a keepsakes section— bulleted lists of points to remember. These are also compiled into a short appendix at the back of the book. Is this a standout read? Not exactly, but writing professionally can quickly turn into a forest through the trees— or a word count through creative thinking— situation. Sometimes it's good to have a reminder of why language and how we use it to make sense of the world is so magical. 📚 #theglamourofgrammar #businessdevelopmentbooks #nonfictionrecommendations #creativenonfiction #readingaboutwriting #marketingbooks #digitalmarketingbooks #businessbookclub #roypeterclark

THE WRITER LAID BARE by Lee Kofman. As if this memoir wasn't impressive enough - honest, open and engaging - it is also a love note to books and literature and an amazing resource for writers. Speaking of impressive, Lee has been published in three languages in three different countries, I found it fascinating reading about all the knowledge and wisdom she had gained about writing and also being in a writing community. This book helped me clear up the question of whether I was ever going to be a writer - it is a no - I am an enthusiastic reader and happy with that. But I would recommend this as a fantastic guide for anyone who is a writer or wants to be. I also loved the way the book is an ode to books and literature. Any author who obviously has such a passion for reading great books is a joy for me to read. I have only read 12 of the 100 books recommended by Lee so there is plenty of reading ahead of me! Lastly, I thoroughly enjoyed the windows into Lee's interesting life through its various stages, from childhood to immigration to long term relationships to motherhood. Thank you so much to @leekofman for this gifted copy which I read very slowly and savoured!

Well, happy new year! I hope 2023 brings you everything you need, many of the things you want, and a few adventures to keep things interesting. Here at Maskill Towers we’ve had a shocker of a holiday season; covid kicked us in the nuts, we’re only just starting to come out of it. Celebrations were therefore rather muted, but we enjoyed each other’s company in our plague house. I haven’t shared much recently, but in the spirit of goals for 2023 (reading more about writing - do you have any goals for the year?) here’s my first read. I got this for Christmas, a gentle and idiosyncratic meditation on being a novelist by the legendary Haruki Murakami. First book for #nonfictionnovember Never Say You Can’t Survive by @charliejaneanders What I loved about this book was that it wasn’t a book that set out to teach you how to write in a “my way or the highway” or “you’ll never be successful unless you do this” sort of way. This book is like going out with a writer friend for coffee when you’re in a writing slump and getting a pep talk. It’s comforting but also says “well, have you thought about it from this angle? Because maybe you’ve been going about writing in a way that isn’t best for you”. I took lots of notes while reading this book that I will definitely be taking to my current work in progress. 4 Stars • • • #readingaboutwriting #shouldbewriting #amreading #booksaboutwriting

When surprise book mail turns a meh-day into a Fri-yay! Goodreads synopsis: “The beloved New York Times bestselling author reflects on home, family, friendships and writing in this deeply personal collection of essays. "Any story that starts will also end." As a writer, Ann Patchett knows what the outcome of her fiction will be. Life, however, often takes turns we do not see coming. Patchett ponders this truth in these wise essays that afford a fresh and intimate look into her mind and heart. At the center of These Precious Days is the title essay, a suprising and moving meditation on an unexpected friendship that explores "what it means to be seen, to find someone with whom you can be your best and most complete self." When Patchett chose an early galley of actor and producer Tom Hanks' short story collection to read one night before bed, she had no idea that this single choice would be life changing. It would introduce her to a remarkable woman-Tom's brilliant assistant Sooki-with whom she would form a profound bond that held monumental consequences for them both. A literary alchemist, Patchett plumbs the depths of her experiences to create gold: engaging and moving pieces that are both self-portrait and landscape, each vibrant with emotion and rich in insight. Turning her writer's eye on her own experiences, she transforms the private into the universal, providing us all a way to look at our own worlds anew, and reminds how fleeting and enigmatic life can be. From the enchantments of Kate di Camilo's children's books to youthful memories of Paris; the cherished life gifts given by her three fathers to the unexpected influence of Charles Schultz's Snoopy; the expansive vision of Eudora Welty to the importance of knitting, Patchett connects life and art as she illuminates what matters most. Infused with the author's grace, wit, and warmth, the pieces in These Precious Days resonate deep in the soul, leaving an indelible mark-and demonstrate why Ann Patchett is one of the most celebrated writers of our time.” Thank you @harperperennial for this gifted copy! #ThesePreciousDays #AnnPachett #HarperPerennial #OliveInfluencer #HarperCollins #WellReadGinger

I can only hope that one day someone enjoys my work enough to spend five pages picking apart One. Single. Sentence. It’s fascinating how much meaning one person can garner from a finite set of words situated between a set of punctuation marks. As interesting as I found this book, I should say that it may have been more appropriately titled “25 Sentences and Why I Think They’re Great”. It was more of an in depth examination of how authors use not just words but also the structure of a sentence to create meaning, rather than an exposé of the editorial process (which is what I was expecting based on the title). Nonetheless, definitely worth the read for any writer friends out there or anyone that has an interest in craft books. It’s a true testament to ‘it’s not just what you say, but how you say it’. #25GreatSentencesAndHowTheyGotThatWay #25GreatSentences #GeraldineWoods #ReadingAboutWriting #BooksAboutWriting #WritingCraftBooks #Writing #AmWriting #Writer #WritersOfIG #WritersOfInstagram #IGWriters #PhillyWriters #WritingCommunity #BooksForWriters #WordsMatter #FallReads #Booktography #NotJustAPrettyBook #ReviewsMatter #BookReview #RecommendedReading #BookRecs #Bookstagram #BookstagramPhilly #BookishLove #Bookish #Bookworm #Bibliophile #WellReadGinger

Fellow writers: do you read books about writing? I can’t do it all the time — most of all because I truly think the only advice that works is to get your butt in the seat and do the work. But this one, this beautiful memoir of a writing life, has really touched me. #BretLott led the @wedgwoodcircle #goodlit writing workshop I attended this year — he blessed us by telling many of the stories in these pages. Like, what happened when he approached James Baldwin at a party, and what it was like when Oprah (“the Force”) picked his out-of-print novel, Jewel, for her all-powerful book club at the height of her influence. He shares his strategy for getting published (more of a strategy to “build the house of rejection”) and his frustration with irony in modern storytelling and the courage it takes to be — cheesy? Sentimental? — heartfelt and earnest. “The radical move right now,” he writes, “is to infuse our post-ironic age with hope, and with love, risking, as if always and ever should be, your own heart.” This is high in my list of recommended reading now, for people who want to be writers. What about you? What are your favorite books about writing? Happy Sunday before the holiday where you can actually rest because you’re not anxious about having to go to work tomorrow. This one has been on my shelf for a while. Hoping it’ll put some fresh energy into my writing because I’m not sure that I like what I’ve put on the page the last few times I sat down with it. #25GreatSentencesAndHowTheyGotThatWay #25GreatSentences #GeraldineWoods #BooksAboutWriting #ReadingAboutWriting #WritersRead #AmWriting #AmReading #WritersOfInstagram #ReadersOfInstagram #WakeUpAndBeAwesome #ShelfieSunday #Shelfie #PhillyWriters #KrispyKreme #SundayFunday #CoffeeAndBooks #SelfCareSunday #IAmAWriter #FutureBestSellingAuthor #WhenImNotWriting #Bookstagram #BookstagramPhilly #Bookish #Bibliophile #Reading #BooksBooksBooks #ReadMoreBooks #BookWorm #WellReadGinger

#WhatAreYouReading With two book projects underway, and another kicking off in a couple of months, I figured it was long past time to read a book about writing a book. Thanks for the recommendation, Pete Havel! This is a fun, easy read on something that could have been a pretty dry topic. #authorwannabe #readingaboutwriting

#circleofbookishfriends day 15: coffee and book. Confession - this is actually tea and book. While I do like coffee - I usually just have a shot of espresso in the morning - and I actually prefer tea just a little more. Today I’m having an iced soy & sugar free London Fog because I was craving some indulgent. Oftentimes - like my coffee - I prefer it without any sugar or milk. But today I was feeling like treating myself. Also really excited to dig back into this book. I read the first chapter and then went away on vacation (and I admittedly don’t tend to read a lot while away so I didn’t pack it with me). So I’m diving back in! • • • #bookstagram #teadrinker #tealatte #treatyourself #amreadingnonfiction #readingaboutwriting

We’ll see how much of this #circleofbookishfriends challenge I can do since I’ll be out of town for a while this month- but at least today I can share what I am #currentlyreading I just started this book by @charliejaneanders Things have been hard (for all of us) the last few years and even as a #horrorwriter - living in a scary sad world isn’t good for creativity. So I’m hoping this book will help. • • • #bookstagram #neversayyoucantsurvive #writinginspiration #writerswhoread #readingaboutwriting #ishouldbewriting

Reading outside is my happy place. But I’m a bit of a Sensitive Sally when it comes to reading while music (or the TV) is playing. My brain will not let me process two sets of words at the same time. (Shout out to the people that can do this because it’s a superpower I wish I had). Hence why I find it exceptionally annoying when someone disrupts the silence that I was previously enjoying by playing their music out loud in a communal space. It takes me completely out of the world that I was sucked into. I lose focus, and end up reading the same passage seven times because I have no idea what I just read. AirPods Pro (along with the dulcet tones provided by the Calm App) have been my saving grace this pool season. Their noise cancelling is beyond anything I’ve ever experienced to the point that it’s a little disorienting when you take them out. You can actually feel the noises of the world fade away as soon as you put them in your ears. It’s beautiful. #HowToTellAStory #TheMoth #PoolReading #ReadingOutside #SummerReading #ReadingAboutWriting #AirpodsPro #CalmApp #SummerSundays #WritersOfInstagram #StoryTelling #WritersOfPhiladelphia #PhillyWriters #ReadABook #WriteABook #CatLady #ReadingWithCats #MyCatsAreMyBestFriends #SensitiveSally #ReadingIsMagic #BookishThoughts #BooksConnectUs #Bookstagram #BookstagramPhilly #Bookstagrammer #BooksOfInstagram #InstaBooks #InstaReads #PhillyReads #WellReadGinger

Current read Why did I wait so long to read this book? It's great! Maybe I was meant to read it now at a point in life when I'm in need of extra motivation and something that helps me get back into the right mindset for writing. It's been a struggle for some time now. I know I should be prepping for Camp NaNo, but reading is calling my name! Back to the book. 📖 #readinginsteadofwriting #readingaboutwriting #campnano

I’m learning how to write white paper in case you haven’t noticed. White paper is a high-in demand writing skill and can bring a lot of dough for me. I already know some of the basics, but I need some hand-on experience. Anybody have any ideas besides just writing samples? #writer #whitepaperwriting #whitepaperwriter #writing #learninganewskill #readingaboutwriting #highindemandskills #highindemand #writingbooks #beingawriter #entrepreneur #entrepreneurlife

Pretty excited that my summer reading is here: three books that came highly recommended to me by my writing mentor. I am anxious to dig in! Unfortunately, I have report cards to finish, and that has to take priority for the next couple of weeks.
