“Dogwood & Pine” Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park is wondrous. It is an eleven course meal for the senses. I expected something incredible, as it has stolen the heart of my @meghangraves_1532, and incredible it is. From the massive El Cap to the powerful Yosemite and Bridal Veil Falls. From the equally peaceful and tumultuous Merced River to the world class hikes of Half Dome and the Mist Trail. The towering pines and cedars, the wildlife, the meadows and the history - all combine to make the Valley the pinnacle of nature. But along the quiet paths beside the Merced River under the canopies of trees and mountains bloom the mountain (or Pacific) dogwoods. Their beauty both softens and adds to the grandeur of the Valley, bringing a sense of comfort and familiarity, every spring. In the still of night, the valley is set aglow by prescribed burns, their warm light dancing through the trees and rippling across the tranquil waters of the Merced River. Sentinel Rock stands guard, a steadfast guardian of the landscape, while the celestial showcase of the Milky Way twinkles like diamonds in the velvet expanse above. APPROACHING STORM, YOSEMITE CLIFF Winter in Yosemite is an incredible time for photography. I find it a particularly creative process due to all the compositional possibilities. The light and conditions are constantly changing making for dynamic interpretations of the landscape. I made this photograph during an oncoming storm. The fast moving storm seemed to be enveloping the valley and turning it into a white blanket. It's a beautiful spring day today in the Sierra Foothills. It's hard to imagine that just a week ago, it was snowing in Yosemite Valley. I made this photograph, along with others in the series, on my way home, back from Charlotte Gibb's artist reception at the Ansel Adams Gallery. The exhibit was beautiful, by the way - as expected! When I arrived in Yosemite Valley just after noon, the weather was rather warm and partly cloudy. When I left around 5 pm, it was very cold with heavy snow falling. I wasn't really prepared for the cold weather - I only had a light down jacket that lost its water repellency. On my way out, I stopped at several places, primarily along Northside Drive. I didn't really plan to photograph that day, but I threw my photo backpack and the tripod in my car, just in case. It took me about 1.5 hours to exit Yosemite Valley! The snow was wet, and the flakes were heavy and large - perfect for photography! The snow barely began to stick to the trees and meadows, which enabled some vegetation color to show through. This season has been different from the past seasons, not in a bad way. We’ve been climbing quite a lot but focusing more on limit free climbing rather than walls as usual. We’ve still got some big volume linkup ideas I’m hoping we can get done next week, but it’s been nice to work on some routes that would have been unrealistic previously.
