Last light on Half Dome. It was the end of a long day of travel and we were driving through Yosemite Valley with a bit of traffic. I looked out the window, saw Half Dome shining against the Merced River and immediately jumped out with camera in hand. The light was glorious. I met a man named Joel on Sentinel Bridge who was also grabbing a couple shots and we got to talking. Can’t remember about what, but I’m sure it was photography related. He had a beard that could rival Poseidon’s. Then it turned out, of the hundreds of campsites in the valley, he had the site directly next to ours that evening. Funny how the universe works sometimes.

El Cap Tree ~1524-2024 Earlier this month, we lost the El Cap Tree, an 80-foot-tall Ponderosa Pine living under a shady roof on the right side of El Capitan. This tree somehow managed to find purchase and sustain life 400 feet up the side of this sheer granite face. The first climb done on El Capitan in 1952 was made to determine the species of this tree. Dwarfed by the cliff on which it made its home, the El Cap tree stood as a reminder to climbers, adventurers, and all Yosemite enthusiasts that with perseverance and tenacity, it is possible to succeed, even in the face of such gargantuan obstacles. 📍Ancestral Ahwahneechee land

You don't take a photograph, you make it.” Ansel Adams Forty years ago today possibly the best photographer the world has ever seen passed away. Ansel Adams passion and zeal for photography and everything nature was instrumental in the continued preservation of many great places including the amazing Yosemite National Park. But did you know that photography wasn’t his first passion. At age 12 Adams’ fell in love with music and playing the piano and did so the rest of his life. An accomplished piano player, Ansel credited the study of music for providing the basis for his discipline in photography. What a gifted man that left behind a legacy of gifts to anyone visiting some of these places he had a part in the preservation of. Last spring in Yosemite there was an epic amount of flooding in the valley after receiving over 200% of the normal snowpack that winter. The results were stunning as you could see the massive granite walls and waterfalls reflected in the water everywhere you looked. It's a beautiful spring day today in the Sierra Foothills. It's hard to imagine that just a week ago, it was snowing in Yosemite Valley. I made this photograph, along with others in the series, on my way home, back from Charlotte Gibb's artist reception at the Ansel Adams Gallery. The exhibit was beautiful, by the way - as expected! When I arrived in Yosemite Valley just after noon, the weather was rather warm and partly cloudy. When I left around 5 pm, it was very cold with heavy snow falling. I wasn't really prepared for the cold weather - I only had a light down jacket that lost its water repellency. On my way out, I stopped at several places, primarily along Northside Drive. I didn't really plan to photograph that day, but I threw my photo backpack and the tripod in my car, just in case. It took me about 1.5 hours to exit Yosemite Valley! The snow was wet, and the flakes were heavy and large - perfect for photography! The snow barely began to stick to the trees and meadows, which enabled some vegetation color to show through.
