So much beauty on my evening walk! I had to cut it a bit short, though, because I left Oliver at home and when I checked on him via the ring camera, he was shimmying his way through the newly installed cat door (which is a tiiiiiight squeeze)! 🤣 When I got home, he was already heading back in. He’s too smart for his own good and I should know better than to go out without him. (The yard is fenced, but I don’t trust that he won’t find a way out. To je moje najljubše drevo in skoraj vedno, ko se napotim k njemu pričakujem, da bom zagledala kakšno magično bitje ob ali na njem, morda sovo, veverico, kako kuka izza debla. Par srnic je tam zelo pogosto. In naše mačke😊 Del posesti, ki meji na gozd smo pustili takšnega kot je bil. Vanj nismo veliko posegali. Vse kar sem sadila sem premišljeno izbrala, da se smiselno vklaplja v gozdni rob in da je užitno, tako za nas, kot za živali. Vsak dan znova se bojim zmrzali, ki bi trenutnemu stanju naših rastlin povzročila ogromno škodo. Svojemu notranjemi jazu govorim, da bo vse dobro + narava že ve kaj počne. This week I read two great books of gothic horror in graphic form. Emily Carroll's short story collection Through The Woods actually creeped me out a lot and I'm really glad I read it with lunch and not before bed, because it had my heart racing! The five stories are beautifully illustrated in red, black and white and are takes on familiar fairytale and folk horror tropes (wolves, dead former wives, the woods, seances) but they weren't predictable and felt fresh. I really loved these stories and think fans of writers like Angela Carter, Kirsty Logan, and Carmen Maria Marchado would too. Talia Dutton's M is for Monster is a take on Frankenstein in which a scientist resurrects her sister after an accident in their laboratory, but it's not her sister that comes back with her body. This one has a gothic feel but it's not scary so much as a look at grief, identity, acceptance and responsibility, with nice retro art, and some queer old ladies who I wish would teach me sewing too. I can endlessly read takes on Frankenstein - I recently loved Our Hideous Progeny and have got A Botanical Daughter to read next. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Through the Woods” is a graphic novel anthology of 5 stories by Emily Carroll in a haunting fairytale style that all end enigmatically, leaving you wondering and worrying about the fate of the characters, and more than a little creeped out. After reading “A Guest in the House” I was hooked on Emily Carroll and had to read another by her! My partner and I read this together again and we really enjoyed it, I wish each story had been its own separate and longer graphic novel because they were very intriguing. The graphics were amazing and definitely scary, you never knew what you were going to turn the page to which I loved. It’s a great quick read, and as an adult who doesn’t get to read books with pictures to anyone but my students in school, I enjoy getting into more graphic novels aimed for adults. The visuals really heightened my experience of these stories and I have found another great author! It’s making me want to reread one of my favorite graphic novels, Fun Home by Alison Bechdel.
