Interfaith Walk - May 16 @ 10:00 am - 3:00 pm Join us on this walk around Lozells and Handsworth, learning about the rich variety of religious communities who live alongside one another in this small, vibrant area. This is an opportunity to view beautiful religious buildings and explore the rituals and practices following death and bereavement within diverse faiths. We will stop at different places of worship hearing personal stories of what happens in the immediate aftermath of a death, what services are held, how do people mourn and what support is given by the faith community. The walk will be led by Cannon Dr Andrew Smith, the Director of Interfaith Relations for the Bishop of Birmingham. The trail involves a walk of approximately 2.5 miles. After thirteen years together, Sarah Tarlow’s husband Mark began to suffer from an undiagnosed illness, which all too rapidly left him incapable of caring for himself. Life – an intense juggling act of a demanding job, young children and looking after a depressed and frustrated partner – became hard. One day, five years after he first started showing symptoms, Mark waited for Sarah and their children to leave their home before ending his own life. Although Sarah had devoted her professional life as an archaeologist to the study of death and how we grieve, she found that nothing had prepared her for the reality of illness and the devastation of loss. Fiercely vulnerable, deeply intimate and yet unflinchingly direct, The Archaeology of Loss describes a universal experience with a singular gaze. With humour, intelligence and urgency, it is through its raw honesty that it offers profound consolation. Sarah Tarlow is a British archaeologist and academic. Death Café at Sun Rising - May 8 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm, The Sun Rising. Death can be a difficult subject to talk about but once we start to talk, it is often much easier than we think. A Death Café is a place for tea, cake and an open conversation about death and dying. It is a space to think about living well until we die. There is no theme, no agenda – the conversation goes where it leads us. The Sun Rising is a natural burial ground and nature reserve and they are hosting a Death Café in The Longhouse with support from BrumYODO as part of the programme A Matter of Life and Death for Dying Matters Week 2024. 'In Memory' at The New Photo Company - Tuesday 7th May - 10am - 12pm In our line of work, we interact with and serve many people who are in different stages of grief. As a print house, we work with images of lost loved ones on a daily basis. These experiences have highlighted just how many people are grieving all alone, without family or friends close by. For this reason we have teamed up with @brumyodo to host our first 'Death Cafe' - a safe space to come in with a photo of your loved one and share some memories. This way you won't be alone and will get the chance to speak openly about your grief. Having lost the Mother and Wife in our home (5 years ago to this very day), we completely understand the agony of losing a loved one, as well as the anxiety of speaking about the pain for fearing of being a 'burden' on those around us. We sincerely hope this will bring help and comfort to anybody who is suffering quietly. No matter how religious or spiritual you are, I’m sure we’ve all had thoughts about how our lives would be judged if there had been a higher power greeting us at Pearly Gates, Valhalla or Hades. Maybe we’ve even fantasized about whether we could try to cheat death, like Antonius Block’s famous game of chess against the grim reaper in The Seventh Seal. In A Matter of Life and Death, David Niven’s main character – a doomed British airman during World War II – is the subject of a heavenly clerical error resulting in him receiving more time on earth than what was originally intended. In that time, he falls in love with an American radio operator, played by Kim Hunter – and argues to the agents and courts of heaven that his life and death must be reevaluated in light of these new circumstances. Love, he argues, conquers death. The 1946 Powell and Pressburger movie is a classic, an important component in its very niche genre of supernatural courtroom drama. It fits perfectly in a canon otherwise inhabited by previously mentioned The Seventh Seal, as well as It’s a Wonderful Life and even current films like Beau is Afraid. What sets it apart is its focus on not just the hopelessness of death and the end of ones existence, but also on the potential for beauty in life illustrated by a distinct visual difference between life and the afterlife – heaven is in black and white, earth is in spectacular Technicolor. The story becomes less focused in the courtroom scenes toward the end of the movie, but in the entirety of its concise runtime, there is always visual wonder, snappy dialogue, and well-balanced pacing to enjoy.
