Work in progress update: I set up 3 separate free pours on Sunday and let them cure for about 4.5 hours, then draped 2 of them upside down. I tried to drape the third one but dropped it during the process; my right hand sunk right into the goopy mess and my glove got stuck. Oh well. Pretty happy with how this is turning out so far. I'm keeping my goal of writing a weekly #meandmyweek post only because I want to actually keep the goal...not because I really want to remember this week. This was a really awful week. Several things happened that were frustrating and discouraging and a few zapped my confidence and made me question...well, what everyone I interact with actually thinks of me. One experience especially was painful & degrading; it should have never happened & it left me with some baggage. So I'm just going to share a few glimmers. I had to take a (ridiculously unnecessary) trip to SLC so I made a little afternoon out of it. By which I mean I stopped at a fabric store and picked up a few things. The clerk who helped me was so friendly and cheerful, and it's always just a happy thing to interact with another fabric lover. Another glimmer that day. As I was driving home I realized I'd heard 3 songs in a row with female singers. (I am old fashioned. I still listen to music from playlists/random shuffles of songs on my cell phone. I also actually BUY CDs!) So I started paying attention and I ended up hearing 11 songs in a row by women artists. Siouxie & Tori & Billie & Olivia & Florence & Alannis & Taylor & Debbie (Harry if you're curious). Even Cyndi & Tanya. Take your hate off boy when you're talking to me...All those women's voices & creativity made me feel a bit buoyed & supported & just the tiniest bit less frustrated. I got some relieving medical news. I still don't have answers but I do know what ISN'T happening. I loved learning which children's books received awards this week. I had already read and loved Big by @VashtiHarrison but after it won I decided I needed my own copy. Especially because it brought me a bit of courage this week. I got a new cell phone. REALLY hoping I love the photos from this one. And I got some crafty time in! The real glimmers, though, were the people who knew the things that happened and were supportive & kind. The lighting on this is not the best—it’s a screenshot from a video (the moment where I was caught in the act using a Tupperware as a tripod😆😜), but I like it anyway and it’s the only thing I kept from the video. Still love making these tapestries even if I can’t imagine actually selling any and I have no idea what I will do with all the unsold products. Gifts? Donations? Hang them all over our house and pretend we live on the set of a Wes Anderson film? I do get a lot of thinking done while weaving, so not all is lost. Working on some stories for potential novels, thinking through Christmas present ideas, wondering which holiday our annual greeting card will be ready for (possibly new year’s at this rate), and how much it’s a total morale booster when some friends and family say “same same same” after I admit to loving Aldi, or to experiencing anxiety and burnout, or to any other of a myriad of ways a person can bravely put a little glimpse of themselves out there (after a lifetime of relishing being unique or interesting, there is also so much comfort in sameness)…these are all things I’m mulling over as I weave today🩵🪡

Hello lovelies! 🧶 For those following my adventures for #knitvember you’ll know I’m ripping out one of my mums cardies and reusing the wool to make a blanket for my daughter. 🧶 I love reusing wool from old clothes and for those interested, here are the stages I go through…. 1. Take awkward photo of me wearing said jumper or cardie 2. Carefully rip along the seams using small scissors or seam ripper. Take care as holes can mean shorter strands of yarn 3. Once it’s all taken apart, assess what you’ve got. With this cardie there was a lovely long panel which is perfect for a scarf so we’ve kept that aside. Then take a panel and using your scissors/seam ripper work along the top until you get a decent strand then gently start pulling. 4. After a LOT of pulling you’ll end up with three piles - one of bits of cotton or small strands and fluff (this cardie was mixed fibres so lots of fluff!). This goes into the ‘stuffing’ bag to fill amigurumi toys with. Then there’s the short strands (generally made while you’re starting off) which are set aside to help sew up projects. And finally assorted sized balls of lovely yarn ready to turn into something new! 🧶 And that’s it. What a fab way to remember a loved one or just reuse your old clothes. How I get covers for my #catchpennybooks upcycled blank coloring books. 1) Find picture book with sweet illos at thrift store. 2) Make sure it is saddle stitched for best image placement. 3) Cut the endpapers at the covers to remove the text block. 4) Find the center of each signature in the book and cut the stitches. 5) Pull the folios out of the book for use as covers. 6) Review the folios to see which pages will make the best covers. #ammaking #bookbinding #upcycle #bookarts
