May 1, 1931: The 102 story New York City’s Empire State Building was dedicated. It had risen in just over a year to become the tallest building in the world at that time with a height of 1,250 feet. It is an Art Deco skyscraper in the Midtown South neighborhood of Manhattan. The building was designed by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon. Its name is derived from “Empire State”, the nickname of the state of New York. The Empire State Building was the world’s tallest building until the first tower of the World Trade Center was topped out in 1970; following the September 11 attacks in 2001, the Empire State Building was New York City’s tallest building until it was surpassed in 2012 by One World Trade Center. As of 2022, the building is the seventh-tallest building in New York City, the ninth-tallest completed skyscraper in the United States, and the 54th-tallest in the world. May 1, 1915: As WWI engulfed Europe, the International Congress of Women met in the Hague, Netherlands, and adopted resolutions on peace and women’s suffrage. They said international disputes should be resolved peacefully and that women should be given the right to vote. The ideals promoted at the Hague influenced the creation of the League of Nations and the United Nations. Cannot believe it’s been a month since my apprenticeship @fabricworkshop ended. It was truly a great experience that I will forever be grateful for. During the apprenticeship I continued exploring memory by creating this three-color screen-print, reminiscent of sundowning, which reveals its images only under specific lighting conditions, symbolizing the fluctuating clarity experienced by those with dementia. Just as individuals afflicted with this condition start their day forgetful and agitated, gain clarity as the day progresses, and then become confused again as evening approaches, the print mirrors this circadian rhythm. The appearance of the images coincides with sunlight touching its surface, revealing only certain elements at any given time. In the absence of natural light, a UV flashlight enables the observer to activate the print, mirroring the caregiver's quest for fleeting moments of clarity in their loved ones grappling with dementia. The emerging images come from the archives of my Italian American family, which regrettably carries a legacy of dementia among the women in our familial lineage. This land is heavily veiled. You'd be foolish to think you can take a trip to a space and unlock its deepest wisdom in a couple of days—not just here, but in any country. I was explaining to a friend the other day, that people often believe they know the land I stand upon today, but in reality, they don't truly understand it. Permission to fully connect with any land requires dedication, consistency, and loyalty. The land itself often chooses who moves there, through love and other sacred connections. We hear stories of this process frequently. Yet, the connection is often a slow burn because it demands trust. I often say that here you must sit with it through its cold, wet, grey days and endure its 65mph winds to truly demonstrate your devotion. 😉🤣 It's a wild ride that's for sure. Every year, we welcome guests in Cornwall—possibly more than in many other places. And every year, I hear them say they adore it here and would move in a heartbeat! I smile and respond, 'Come spend a winter here, my friend. Huddle through a very wet and wild spring, and then see how you feel.' As we celebrate Beltane today, consider this your reminder: Your feet made deliberate steps towards the land you live upon for a reason. Tune into it and adore it as you do the places you travel to. Our Lineage Exhibition really is a family affair ! With the entrance wall of the exhibition the perfect example of female creative lineage. Did you know that the baby in this photograph is Kate Dorrough in front of her mother's early tapestry works? Born in London and attending both the Eastbourne School of Art and the Royal College of Art, Heather Dorrough was possibly the first university-accredited Interior Designer working in Sydney in the 1960s. After the birth of her daughter Kate, she began making fabric artworks, which incorporated her design background and were influenced by her adoption of the craft movement and her presidency of the Craft Council of NSW. Heather states: "My desire was to create a crossover between the traditional tapestry and the contemporary painting". A crossover and evident influence in Kate Dorrough's early post-graduate works which are displayed in contrast to her mother's tapestry as you enter the Lineage Exhibition. #lineage #abstract

On April 30, 1939, the New York World’s Fair opens in New York City. The opening ceremony, which featured speeches by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and New York Governor Herbert Lehman, ushered in the first day of television broadcasting in New York. Spanning 1,200 acres at Flushing Meadow Park in Queens, the fairground was marked by two imposing structures—the “Perisphere” and the “Trylon”—and exhibited such new technology as FM radio, robotics, fluorescent lighting and a crude fax machine. Norman Bel Geddes designed a Futurama ride for General Motors, and users were transported through an idealized city of the future. In honor of Arbor Day, celebrating some famous trees: General Sherman Tree (Sequoia National Park, California) Believed to be between 2,300 and 2,700 years old, the giant sequoia named for Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman is the world’s largest tree by volume. According to the National Park Service, the tree is 274.9 feet tall with a 102.6-foot circumference at its base—big enough to supply wood to build 120 average-sized houses. Up until 1931, a tree named for General Ulysses S. The theme of this gathering will be looking at our female lineage. 💫 Our female lineage forms the foundation of our identity as women, weaving together the threads of our being. Existing not only in our mother’s wombs but also in that of our grandmothers, the motherline encompasses much of our experiences as women. Every joy, every trauma, every triumph—they are all etched into the very fabric of who we are, passed down through generations for better or worse. Eileen Cullen and Briana Waqa of @womens.circle will create space for a chance to unpack the experiences of our grandmothers and mothers, and how that might affect ourselves. This container will include mindfulness, meditation, journaling, reflection, sharing, and connection with other women. Anyone that identifies with the female experience is welcome! Before going to Malta for the Constellators International retreat, I posted about becoming a good ancestor regardless of whether we have children. In Malta I ran a one day workshop on becoming a good ancestor and the first question asked by a participant even before we did the introductions was precisely this - how can I be an ancestor if I don’t have children? Systemically, our lineages are much larger than just blood ancestors. The usual example is if you save somebody’s life you become part of their family system as you’ve allowed the life flow to continue in it. Or if you took somebody’s life you also become part of their family system. Also, we often see in constellations the triangles with the ex partners who, if they stayed, would have prevented the children of the new system from being born. So, even by ending your previous relationships, you might have been instrumental in somebody else having their life. And this is the ultimate wide definition of the ancestor - the one who made life possible to flow forward, the one who facilitates the flow of life. So in the latter example, if you left your ex and held a grudge against them for the rest of your life you are impacting the fate of the children in their new family, even if you had no contact with any of them. They would not be free to live their life fully and freely as it came at a cost of somebody’s suffering - yours. Healing your own pain, liberates many others to just be themselves. In the workshop, the first ritual we did was to explore the places of the ancestors, current living generations and the future generations still to come. After this piece the participant who asked the question beamed with pleasure and shared that they experienced their role and impact in the future. Our life really matters.
