I continued with #slipcasting during my final semester at #NSCADU but switched from porcelain to #earthenware slip. I also moved away from the cubist inspired aesthetic toward a more gestural approach to making. Ideas related to the treatment of animals continued to be a source of inspiration. For this work, I looked to #Bruegel’s painting #theblindleadingtheblind as a way to comment on the treatment of rabbits as test subjects for human cosmetics. For most, the figures invoked an immediate association with #donniedarko. Black and white #terrasigillata was used as surface treatment. These were essentially 3 dimensional sketches. With some exceptions, it is the way I prefer to work - figuring things out directly in the material. The base was also experimental and pieced together rapidly for purposes of exhibition. It was not ideal. This piece met with an unfortunate end. At the time, my personal life imploded. I was going through a separation, which eventually led to divorce. Once the semester was over, I had to rapidly pack and move across country, from Halifax to Alberta, with my 6 year old daughter in tow. Il gebruik het schilderij van Bruegel vaak in mijn taallessen als we het over spreekwoorden hebben. Deel van de verwachtingen kwamen uit: ik weet nu alle spreekwoorden te vinden, te benoemen en uit te leggen. Dus missie geslaagd. Ook een hoop achtergrond informatie gekregen. Leerzaam en interessant. Echter, ik vind de opmaak van het boek erg rommelig en dat stoort me. De verschillende kleuren tekst vind ik afleidend. Het lettertype ook eigenlijk net te groot. Alsof het voor beginnende lezers is, maar daar is de tekst veel te ingewikkeld voor. Dus gemengd gevoel overgehouden aan dit boek. From Bruegel to Rubens: Great Flemish Drawings @ashmoleanmuseum until 23rd June. A curator’s tour by A Van Camp gave us a wonderful introduction to this fascinating exhibition that explores the function of drawings in Flanders during the C16th and C17th. From the practice of copying, to sketches as part of the design process for works of art, to works in their own right and those that were given to forge friendships.The low level lighting to preserve the works is seductive, watch the visitors step closer to each image to scrutinise and admire the draughtsmanship. Thank you @banburymuseum for organising such a wonderful evening. Retour à Bruxelles (en fait je n'en suis pas encore revenue 😃 !) avec le démesuré Palais de Justice... Il est visible de partout, c'est d'ailleurs le premier bâtiment de la ville que j'ai repéré, en arrivant à Bruxelles par le train. On ne peut pas le louper il est... monstrueusement grand. Il surplombe le quartier des Marolles. Immense, impressionnant et en travaux depuis les années 80 parait-il ! Seule la coupole, toute neuve, émerge des échafaudages, qu'on prend de loin pour une architecture un peu particulière.... Mais non, on se rapproche, et on ne voit que ça. Des échafaudages si vieux que les travaux actuels consistent en leur consolidation 😱 Une histoire belge assez pathétique qu'on n'aurait même pas osé inventer. Puis au fil des pérégrinations, La Maison de Bruegel datant du 16e siècle , puis à côté de l'église Notre-Dame de la Chapelle dont j'ai déjà parlé (c'est l'église de la communauté catholique polonaise de Bruxelles), une oeuvre représentant Brueghel au travail. Puis, derrière la spectaculaire chaire baroque en bois massif datant de 1720, le tombeau de Brueghel (à gauche sur la photo). Et quelques autres célébrités bruxelloises... I love this painting so much. Netherlandish Proverbs by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1559) is a Flemish masterpiece, rich with colour and cultural/linguistic insight. In ‘Fed to Red Birds’ my painter character Remy has this particular scene from it tattooed down his arm. I loved detailing the red velvet dress, the demon with head in hands, the dog with napkin tied around his neck, waiting patiently for food. When I lived in Brussels, it was 100 metres from Bruegel’s house. The daydreaming every time I walked past! A very different needlework picture to that posted yesterday, but again English, and of a similar date, circa 1700-1730. The dancing woman in the four photographs here recalls the earlier rustics shown in the engravings of Sebald Beham and the paintings of Pieter Bruegel, in both her attitude of careless abandon as she skips between strawberries and a flower over rolling knolls, and her pose, which particularly echoes women in Bruegel’s ‘The Peasant Wedding Dance’ and ‘The Wedding Dance in the Open Air’. A captivating film still from the exceptional and loosely autobiographical 1975 Soviet drama masterpiece ‘Зеркало’ (‘Mirror’), directed and written by the renowned Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky (4 April 1932 – 29 December 1986). This particular shot pays visual homage to the painting ‘Jagers in de sneeuw’ (‘The Hunters in the Snow’) by the Dutch Renaissance artist Pieter Bruegel de Oude (Pieter Bruegel the Elder, c. 1525–1530 – 9 September 1569), as depicted in the second image. Bruegel's work left a profound impact on Tarkovsky, influencing his artistic vision significantly. One of the many treats in Vienna was seeing the collection of Bruegel paintings at the Kunsthistorisches Museum. All of the paintings in the collection were created within a nine year period and were hung together in one room. Seeing the actual paintings of so many familiar images was quite overwhelming. 15th – 16th century Mary Rose style Leather Bottle A water bottle styled from the water bottle found in the Mary Rose wreck of 1545. These style of water bottles have been found in archaeological digs as far back as the Roman period till the early 19th century. The bottle was produced from 3mm veg tan, using uncooked peas to form the bottle. Double stitched and coated in natural beeswax. One of my first attempts at the bottle. Will produce next a Costrel and another Water bottle.
