(Amiable Child Memorial - NYC’s Smallest Cemetery- Riverside Park, Manhattan). Grant’s Tomb on Riverside Dr. and W. 122nd St. is a huge mausoleum for a well-known general and U.S. President and his wife. Just 100 yards northwest of Grant’s Tomb is a monument devoted to one little-known person. This small monument is called the Amiable Child Monument and it was here 100 years before Grant’s Tomb and it’s the city’s only single-person private cemetery on city land. The “Amiable Child” was St. Claire Pollock, a child who died at the age of 4 on July 15, 1797. The inscription on the grave reads “in the 5th year of his age”. The inscription is on the base of a pedestal below a modest white marble urn. The story has puzzled people for 200 years because not much is known about the grave. It is thought that the boy died from a fall off the cliffs overlooking the Hudson River below. Different accounts of the story have persisted, but most agree that the land belonged to George Pollock, a linen merchant, who put up the grave. Whether he was an uncle or the father is unsure. He sold the land soon after the boy’s death and asked that the marble monument grave and iron fence around it be kept as is. As NYC grew around it, the urn remained undisturbed (it has been changed twice due to deterioration). The land eventually became Riverside Park in 1873. When Grant’s Tomb was built in 1897, people visiting the tomb became drawn to the small “Amiable Child” grave nearby. People still visit the tiny grave and you can even see flowers left by the monument around the date of the little boy’s death.
Every year on All Saints Day I sell funeral flower arrangements at the local city cemetery. And all arrangements that remain unsold are being layed by me on abandoned children's graves..I light candles, pick up garbage,leave some candies for these little souls as well.. This funeral wreath on the photo was layed last november..Almost year ago. Recently I saw it still hanging on this battered wooden cross.. No-one stole it. No-one blew it. The first one made me think of a dragon devouring the sun. The tombstones that simply say our darling or our precious baby are very moving. And I’m a gal who never had children. George and Julia Basham lost their oldest daughter in November 1886 at 6 years of age. Less than a year later in August 1887, they lost their youngest daughter Martha at only 4. I finally dusted off my old camera to take pictures of some graves in the cemetery nearby. I still remember how some people were upset that smartphones were going to take over photography, and in a way it definitely did. But pointing, tapping, then using filters on photos doesn't compare to actually having the time and patience of using a real camera. I'm also starting to notice there are a ton of childrens graves in this cemetery. It makes me wonder what was going on around here in the 19th century.
