🌱For a Good Cause - Cut Flowers in Support of the Dementia Society of Ottawa🌱 I love garden blooms, and like so many, we either have a loved one - or know of someone close to us with a family member - that has battled Dementia, a long term brain disorder. My Mom’s diagnosis was what they called “Reluctant Alzheimer’s” following a stroke. She’s been gone now 15 years, but I well remember the personality changes she suffered and how her everyday activities were detrimentally impacted on a progressive basis. All to say, this cause resonates with me on so many levels, and I need to give a special shout out to Amy @amyin613. She recently shared a stunning bouquet she received on Instagram stories, along with information on Burbs in Bloom. Burbs in Bloom was founded by Katrina @burbsinbloom, a local health care provider working with older adults here in Ottawa. In 2023, to honour her daily work with older adults and to serve this population directly, she’s aiming to fundraise exclusively in support of the Dementia Society. She’s doing so by making beautiful cut flower bouquets available to those making a donation to the Dementia Society of Ottawa. All flowers are grown locally in her suburban garden. The funds she’s raising will help offset the cost of services for clients and families living with cognitive changes and Dementia in our city. Katrina’s fundraising goal is $10,000 over the course of the 2023 cut flower season. 🌸African Daisies & Statice🌸 My Mum’s garden is loving the rain and all the hard work she has put into improving her soil. This gorgeous purple/pink African daisy (Osteospermum) and the many colours of these annual statice. Statice: They are super easy to care for, they have really long lasting and showy flower bracts which makes them perfect for cut flower arrangements and dried flower bouquets. Statice prefers full sun; so provide a bright, sunny location for the best possible blooms. Once mature, your statice plant will be quite drought tolerant, so plan on watering only once or twice a week when it is full grown. Statice will behave like a perennial and return year after year. African Daisies (Osteospermum): Hailing from sandy and rocky areas in South Africa, African daisies need well-drained soils in order to perform their best. This, however, doesn't mean that they like to stay too hot and dry. In fact, their climate is typically very mild. When grown in areas with hot summers, African daisies take a break from blooming and focus on surviving the stressful heat of the summer. Once things start to cool back down, the show picks up where it left off and continues until frost. If you are planning on using African daisies in your garden, treat them as a cool season bloom The blooms all consist of a ring of showy outer petals in bright colors and a compact "eye" in the center. The eye of the African Daisy bloom can be several different colors, typically brown, gold, pink, or green.
