This is my youngest son Callum and his beautiful partner Iuliia, who will be 35 weeks pregnant tomorrow. They live in Dubai. They have had to cope with a lot lately. Strife from the Home Office around visas for Iuliia, obstetric complications, prolonged hospitalisation, US sized medical bills. Through it all, pragmatic, grounded, strong. Iv got to say Isabella has certainly grown with her condition. She has learnt how to breath the best way for her, sos he can cope with her condition. She also deals with the hospital staff really well, she got used to going into an hospital environment and treated the staff more like friends playing a game of check ups. In our case it has got easier slowly but the worry is still there. My final and #14 tip for #copingwell this year: defence v offence. I think often people think that to be happy you have to sit and wait for a happy day to fall from the sky into their lap but oh no, you got to fight for it most times. “Guard your heart”. To be happy, you have to be on the defence and not just play offence, it’s a bit like watching the World Cup. It is a little secret of mine to actually want people to know my struggles too because I want them to know that I bleed 🩸 just like them and that I have to fight for my joy just like they should do! I like to observe my family and friends to make sure that I don’t trip up on what people say or do to me or the things that go wrong in a day, but decided for myself, that if I want to have a good day then I will make sure that l’ll enjoy myself regardless. Happy days don’t just fall from the sky but can be birthed from a place of protection and wisdom. My tip #13 for #copingwell is that you will never please everyone and so learn to be ok with that. That day will never come so you can't force yourself to be different just to please others. You may please them now but 5 years later you must think, was it worth it. I always see it as an equation: + please family = - not pleasing friends. My #tip 12 for #copingwell ; the critical eye 👁️🫣 We all have it, I believe ever since the garden of #eden. But the important thing is to reduce the time we look out through them. Things in our lives that should be good turn to be so bad because we look with critical eyes. A glass of water goes from being good for us, to being, water that has been taken from land that was used to cut down trees, that has been polluted by the government, that I s too warm to be drunk… and on and on. Do you see, sometimes we have just got to learn to enjoy things and enjoy what we have because with the critical eyes, you will never ever be happy. Disappointments, loss, grief, rejection – whatever source of stress you may have is something you will have to deal with at some point in your life. To quote Havelock Ellis, an English essayist and physician, “Pain and death are part of life. To reject them is to reject life itself.” As a means to deal with stress, most people form habits. Coping mechanisms are tools that people use to assist them to get through challenging situations. Unfortunately, many of these habits are harmful ones, not only to you but also to the people around you.​​​​​​​​ ​​​​​​​​ Humans enter a condition of "fight or flight" when confronted with an external threat. And when confronted with an internal threat, they enter a state of "accept or suppress," frequently going to great measures to avoid what most people fear the most: an unpleasant feeling. And when “flight” and suppress” becomes the constant theme of how you deal with your battles then it becomes unhealthy. ​​​​​​​​ ​​​​​​​​ Unhealthy coping mechanisms can have a negative impact on your mental health, emotional state, physical well-being, and overall outlook, which also affects your relationship with others. My #tip 10 for #copingwell : get off the treadmill of comparison because you will tire yourself out. It is a simple one but it can be quite hard right. We get pulled so much into competing and being the bigger "dog" but have you ever realised that you will just keep chasing and running. It is great some days but others it is not. Life is ultimately about balance I think. As a Christian, it's always interesting how almost half of the time, after Jesus would perform miracles or something, he would always choose to find quiet spots and not be in the competition hamster wheel! #seethingsdifferently #competition #peace #thisistheyear

My #tip 9 for #copingwell : reaction time. Don’t always react to things straight away but take the time to think. I think this is just a simple law of life ☺️. I think we can often just respond in the heat of the moment but that may not be the best. My #tip 8 for #copingwell - petty (little) things. I think try to not get caught up in (or worry about) all the (petty, little) things or politics because you will just run yourself out. I try to have an ultimate focus or an over arching problem that takes all my focus away from the little things. You start to see problems as insignificant over time. If you take the hunter-gather context, we were only meant to worry about where to eat and where to sleep, that was all, not ‘oh I wonder if sharen will open the door for me today’! For my example; I lost my passport a few months back and so all these other problems I had just faded away because my focus was on that. It actually provided to be a welcomed distraction and help me cruise through the final busy term. ‘I ain’t got time to worry about things’ #worry #littlethings #focus #mentalhealth #free 😅🤗

#tip 7 for #copingwell - rumours and gossip. It will always follow you so you do have to learn how to deal with it right. I think true #freedom is when you can walk into a room and not care at all about the rumours and gossip about you, you are free to go and do what you want, providing it’s good 😊 . It takes time to get there of course but you I think the first step is to let go, let go of your reputation and just be ok with yourself, as human as you are. I have two tips here; first I try and predict what people will say about me and then when they actually say it, it provides me with reassurance that I’m already two steps ahead of them. The other is that I know whatever is a lie will simply fade away and what is true will remain. For example, there was a lot of rumours, even within myself, that I could not last here for more than month, but here I am… one year and counting, PTL🙌🤗. I actually just can’t bother with it sometimes 😅. Sometimes it will bother you but your recovery is what matters, it matters to your future employers and your little sphere. 😇🙌 #rumours #gossip #fake #bullying #befree #seeds #delicate #thisistheyear

My #tip 6 for #copingwell : ¿Are we alone? - no you are not! It’s quite remarkable how most of us will fall in a season where you feel alone but yet we have all come from different backgrounds, upbringings, families and friends. If you just only start speaking to #people will you notice that you are not alone and your life certainly does matter. It takes time to get through this period of course and it’s ok to be where you are but don’t stay there. I heard a quote saying that it was “the human condition to feel all emotions but the danger is when we start to camp there”. You are never alone, you just got to look up, look around you and see the #people right next to you. #tip 4 for my #advice for #copingwell: Self control. It is the difference between being banned from the Academy for ten years or being celebrated for recieving your first Oscar after waiting 30 years *ahem*. To have control of yourself is precious and must be guarded at all cost. Inspiration is key too when you make decisions and mine would come from the fact that I saw my family and parents be controlled by others and not themselves and I thought I. Won't. Live. Like. That! It's sad to not go and travel to a place because of what a certain person may have said or done. You must #takebackcontrol of your own self and emotions and not let no again rip it away from you. #tip 3: empathy - we’ve all been through hell with covid so why do we need more of it! My perspective has completely shifted after covid and now I see people as people with weights and baggages and all. Seeing people that way definitely helps you to manage them in a good way even if they don’t love you back. This, I think, is vital if you want to live and stay happy. In the last few days I’ve spoken with several people struggling to cope with the uncertainties in our world. We’ve had 2 years of a pandemic, serious concerns about climate change and now fears of escalating conflict. Whatever is going on in your life, it’s embedded in this wider context, so it’s normal to feel uncertain and uncomfortable and for some it becomes overwhelming. Often taking action can help, so think about what you can do, rather than feeling helpless. Perhaps donating to charities, supporting aid organisations, recycling and reducing carbon footprints and adopting personal coping strategies that alleviate anxiety. #copingwell #alleviateanxiety #pandemicfatigue #takeactiontofeelbetter

I’m not coping well today. I’ve tried several times to write something meaningful that makes sense of this wrestling inside me, but the truth is— I’m not coping well today, after watching my child seize again over the weekend. And I know— I know it could have been worse. I know this time it was shorter than normal. I know my baby girl is running around like a wild woman today—- and that— that is amazing! All of that is true— But it doesn’t undo the rest of the truth. . . It doesn’t undo the trauma. It doesn’t undo the 10 minutes of watching her seize, and monitoring her breathing, and hoping this one isn’t THE one. It doesn’t undo the reality of hard decisions, and difficult question, and calls with physicians that wait for me around the corner. The good does not make the bad go away. The good is nice— yes. But it does not negate the bad or delete it. I still own that reality. . . So as I reach the end of the day, I realize I’m not coping well. And I want to talk about that more— coping well and what that looks likes— but not now. Now I’m gonna let myself cry— Have my family eat leftovers— Go to bed early— Lean deeply into my faith— And try again to cope well tomorrow. . . Sometimes as we adventure through life we hit a chapter that just isn’t what we bargained for … the last couple of weeks have been that for me. I was tired - tired of the PNW weather (rain), tire of living in a small space and tired of working in a profession where things just aren’t working these days. Our latest adventure shifted my perspective - suddenly I was reminded of all the things I have to be thankful for. Sometimes, we forget just how many good things we have and I was reminded today that having the ability to work in a profession where you can make people’s darkest days a little less dark is a privilege worth appreciating. One of my most favorite definitions for mental wellness is from Dr. Daniel Siegel’s book “The Whole-Brain Child.”📚 He emphasizes that mental wellness is being in the flow of our own RIVER OF WELL-BEING.🛶 This does not mean that you are necessarily super laid-back at all times, but it does mean that there is a deep sense of being AT PEACE with yourself and the world around you.✨ We all hit the banks often and find ourselves feeling stuck, yet being self-aware means that you recognize this and can act to take care of yourself, so that you get back in the flow. One coping strategy for anxiety is that of WIDENING YOUR GAZE.👀 If you find yourself zoning in on one thing, fixating, and having looping thoughts, it can be helpful in both a literal and a metaphorical sense to TAKE IN THE BIG PICTURE.✨ This may look differently for each person, but may be as simple as tangibly grounding yourself through your senses as you notice what is around you.❤️ This can also be applied in a more cognitive, cerebral way by paying attention to the singular thought that keeps going through your mind and then working to provide more context to the narrative. What we think has tremendous impact on the way we feel.
