Today is our three year Benniversary! 🎉 Getting more beautiful and grumpy every year? (The photos are 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.) She didn't even want her peanuts this morning lol We caught Benni three years ago after seeing her struggle and ask for help for weeks. The intention was to give her to a rescue after a few hours. That never happened, and after trying to find a placement for three weeks, we found a vet instead and that's the beginning of our story. Benni is the bird who needs the most attention and care of the flock. She needs very frequent beak trims and a modified diet to keep her weight and nutrient intake up. She's extremely angry at us when on the nest and extra friendly off it. And she's so important. It’s National Specially Abled Pets Day! A day for animals just like Wren! Wren may have some physical limitations, but I try not to limit her in any other way. She goes to puppy classes and plays with “normal” puppies, she works on training and basic commands (she’s REALLY good at no jumping and down 😂) and she’s as smart as a whip! Some people stare at us, as she is certainly different than most dogs (but also so so pretty), and some people say how wonderful I am that I took her on, and others think of how hard it must be. Sunshine is in quarantine due to some health challenges. Her friend Bernardo often sits next to her at the fence, and once in a while they have visits together. 💚Sunshine turned four years old on February 11. She was born paralyzed in the back legs and has a hip deformity. With physical therapy as a baby, she learned to move around by manipulating other parts of her body. We are very aware of her quality of life. There has never been a reason to consider her leaving us. One of our clients has graciously donated this pet freedom ramp used by their beloved pet who has recently passed. In Baron’s honor, they would like to rehome this piece of equipment to a family that could use it to benefit their pet. This ramp has been waterproofed by being painted, and caulked at every seam, joint, and screw hole. It's 18 feet long, has sides that are 16 inches high, and is 2 feet wide. The ramp also comes with plastic mats and artificial turf. This ramp will work effectively for up to a 22-inch high step. This ramp is heavy and requires four people to move it, as well as a trailer for transportation. Pooping is a team effort for Ellie!!💩 Ellie has spina bifida, a condition of her spine that impacts her nervous system. Aside from not having a tail, she is missing her L7 vertebrae and her spinal cord is not closed. For Ellie, this means she has trouble with her bladder and bowels due to lack of control of her muscles and nervous system. Her disability has also come with a few underlying conditions, including megacolon. Today was full bath and spa day for Regen! Why does Regen get baths? Regen has severe mobility issues after a life saving surgery. These mobility issues are degenerative, but she has a great quality of life because we are here to do things she can’t. We take her to the potty, we bathe her regularly, and in between baths we use veterinarian recommended waterless bath. Keeping her butt clean is the only “big” thing she can’t do, so we do it for her! If you follow Cappy, another cat with mobility and bladder issues, he gets the same treatments from his mama too :) Disabled pets can be a lot of work but also incredibly fulfilling. While many people would chose to euthanize a pet with these issues, we believe that as long as she is happy and otherwise healthy, we will be her feet and her bath! In a situation where you’re unsure what choice to make? Always talk to your vet, and get a second (or third) opinion!
