Last night's bed time movie and I may have cheated with this one but there was no way I was waiting any longer to cover it, it was the trailer that gave me the idea for this themed week too. Released in 1980 and better known as Zombie Holocaust this is about an anthropologist and a scientist who, while investigating a series of ritualistic mutilations in hospitals find themselves travelling to a small island in Indonesia but once there they'll have more than just cannibals to worry about. This one is just pure Italian gore and I've lost track of how many times I've seen it now. It was also filmed simultaneously with Zombie Flesh Eaters and uses all the same sets, it just a shame they didn't use the same zombies. They're not exactly brilliant looking. As for the movie itself it really does feel like two movies just spliced together and it does take a long time to see the first zombie and even longer to see the titular doctor. That whole sub plot barely even has much screen time. The acting isn't bad in this one which with every viewing still surprises me, dubbing is a wee bit naff but that's not the reason I watch this one. This one is all about the gore and it's just glorious. Well minus one kill which is damn right hysterical but that's all down to the prop. Even though it takes ages for any zombies or mad doctors to arrive it is still paced rather well and gets stuck in almost immediately. As the movie progresses and our party goes to the island this is when the gore gets in your face and up your bum as we're treated to all many of visceral effects. We also have a bit more plot here too with why the doctor is doing his experiments and why the cannibals are a bit more agitated. But again this isn't a movie your watching for plot. My only real gripe is it doesn't have a really impactful finale like the aforementioned ZFE and that's this movies only real draw back. A much needed 4K upgrade for both cuts of the film and I’m glad it includes both because they are both really good. Some of the gnarliest zombie gore you could imagine. Boat prop engine to the face is always a killer one lol. Loads of gnarly stuff here. A pretty great Cannibal flick all in all too and it delivers throughout. Zombie Holocaust aka Doctor Butcher M.D.(Medical Deviant) (1980), directed by Marino Girolami. It was meant as a rip-off of both Zombi and Cannibal Holocaust, but it's unique in that it pits cannibals vs. zombies. What fascinates me most about this movie is that there were purported riots at the 42nd Street grindhouse theatre it played at. All the promotional materials for this Blu-Ray from Severin say as such. Yet I can find no information about what sparked the riot? Was it the movie? Were people upset by the gore or the content? Was it the theatre? The U.S. distributor hyped the hell out of the movie with all sorts of gimmicks. One shtick was the "Butcher Mobile," a flat bed truck that drove around NYC at high speeds, almost running people down. There was a guy in a blood splattered doctor's costume with a hatchet and two bound and gagged women on the back of the truck. Did this cause the riot?! Dammit! I need to know.
