We explored expressive movement meditation. Folks came away with something in their mind, body or soul shaken up. With a special use permit from the National Park Service, we hosted 10 Indigenous ancestral skills keepers at our cove. We embarked on a cultural journey, learning the ancestral uses of local plants for sustenance and healing. As we sat by the beach, making cordage from dogbane, our teacher Edward Redbird Willie reminded us of our interconnectedness with our plant and animal relatives. They miss us - they've been waiting for us to renew our contract with them. In a serendipitous farewell, a redtail hawk swooped down and flew between us, sending us off in a good way as we said our goodbyes. If I could tell myself a few things when I was just starting out on this journey, it would be the following: This isn’t “Art advice” but some Life Advice that has worked for me. 🔹Think for yourself and be selective on who you take advice from. 🔹 Just because someone is an “Expert” doesn’t mean they actually know what the F*ck they are talking about. You see, some people rise to social and professional heights by any means necessary— not necessarily by merit. Please REMEMBER THAT. Next: 🔹 Trust your intuition. If it doesn’t feel right— Don’t do it. Even if you are in a crowded room and they are all watching and waiting— walk away with confidence. 🔹Stay focused. It’s ok to screw up. Out of the darkness of my biggest mistakes came by biggest successes. You will screw up more by thinking about that time you screwed up! Think about those times you succeeded! 🔹Keep your people close. Don’t neglect your family or loved ones. 🔹Help others even if it is inconvenient. But do not overextend yourself by helping others or you will no longer be able to help others or yourself. 🔹Don’t tell everyone all that you know. Listen instead of talk sometimes. You don’t have to let them know how smart you are. That time we almost bought a plantation 😳 (we actually considered 3 antebellum homes that were on the market a few years back! ) Why would I want to own a plantation? Well, it wasn’t to throw weddings, parties or create a warped southern Disneyland-type attraction. No sugary hi-fructose corn syrup mint juleps. I had other aspirations— And sure, some of it was ego and a flex (Let’s be real) … However, the true reason was that I once believed that THE ONLY WAY of effectively being involved in changing the historical narrative was by ownership. This may have even been true at some point in time. However, things have changed. I don’t know why or how or if this change is only in my mind. Perhaps it has come about with having more gray hairs accompanied by a few more rounds around the sun? All I know is that I now see that a “movement” or “revolution” comes from the inside. I feel that all of us can lead and facilitate change from within. We can share these ideas and perspectives with the tips of our fingertips by using these sharp pieces of science called phones. Yes, objects and places are important as they serve as reminders. However more important is the belief and knowledge of corrective histories. One has to accept, understand and share to inspire others to believe. We live in a strange but exciting time. Ok. Let me step off my soap box. I’m afraid of heights 😉 And yes, the antebellum home above was elegant and spectacular etc etc but I am very glad that we decided on another route ! She led me to hold the strength to share her stories to honor her and her family’s fight for home. I honor the women who’ve stepped forward to join this effort." Theresa Harlan (adopted at birth) is the daughter of Elizabeth Campigli Harlan. She was one of Bertha Felix Campigli's (1882-1949) seven children, the last of the Felix family to live at Felix Cove. After Bertha’s death her husband Arnold Campigli and son Victor were served eviction papers in 1952 by ranchers Turney and Lundgren. Victor fought the eviction in court. He lost the case and appeal.
