I finished reading this glorious book last night and I am disappointed that it is over! It’s one of those books that sticks with you and even though it was an emotional read at times, I always looked forward to getting back into it. It jumps between different characters and years, but it is done so well and I loved how the narrative intertwined and came together. 🤍 Lovers at the Museum by Isabel Allende. *Swipe for Synopsis* 💙 Review - I found this short story for free on Amazon recently and recognising the author, thought I’d give it a try. In general, I think short stories are really difficult to write, because you hardly have any time to build your characters and get the reader to become emotionally involved in the story. This one was super short, but the story had me intrigued. I really enjoyed the writing style and the story had elements of fantasy which made the writing at times feel poetic. For such a short story, I don’t have a lot to critique, but I can easily say that I enjoyed reading it and if it was longer I feel like I would have enjoyed that too. The characters were all a bit whimsical, the two lovers were interesting and I was yearning to know more about them. The detective also made himself a mystery to me and I would love to see him in a longer story. 💜 Recommendation - If you need a break from your current read or don’t know what to read next, you can read this one super quick - more like an hour, than a day - and get a bit of whimsical love in your life. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

After a storm hits and they wake up on a (not so) deserted island, they find themselves facing a far more sinister enemy. (It's dinosaurs!) The story is fun and action-packed - there are a lot of epic battle scenes and many sword swinging shenanigans. I found my attention often wavering as the novel bounces between characters like a rapid fire pistol. I appreciated the narrator's "pirate accent" throughout, but some of the characters dialogue was incredibly hard to parse. I had to stop quite a few times to decipher what they were saying, which took me right out of the action. I think this book tried to take on too much, honestly. There were too many side plots and a lot of jumping around that made things hard to keep straight. Too many convenient solutions to problems. If you're looking for some bloody, cannon firing fighting, this will definitely be your cup of tea. . It’s up to Chelsey to get to the bottom of things; not only for Ellie, but for the next girl who may not be able to escape. I was immediately drawn into this story, as it seemed eerily similar to something that could happen in real life. No monsters, nothing supernatural, just real human beings doing terrible things - especially as a mother, that always hits me right in the gut. But I appreciate the author taking time to show how this happens so often, with little to no media coverage, leaving families to try to get answers on their own. Emiko Jean was not afraid to bring to light the fact that if you are a wealthy person of a certain background, then the searching you receive is quite different than a low income minority. It’s heartbreaking, and needs to change. This case was personal for Chelsey and the way it mirrored her own life clearly made her more invested in the outcome. It was at times painful to read, as she recounted what happened to her sister and simultaneously tried to figure out what happened to Ellie too. Emiko Jean did a fantastic job at showcasing just what can happen when you are in captivity, the bonds that form between victims. I was nearly in tears by the end, and I’m grateful I had the audio so I could continue listening to the story when I didn’t have the chance to sit down and read from the book. ❓how was your weekend? Told in three different narratives, we learn how the crimes from 2000 affects present day events. My sleep schedule already struggles, but reading this made it non-existent. Definitely a book for the “one more chapter” club. The novel is incredibly atmospheric and weaves three narratives—almost separate mysteries—together perfectly. Each POV had its own vibe—the 2000s storyline was very In Cold Blood; the child’s story reminded me of Room; and the present-day perspective reads as your typical high stakes thriller. If you read a lot of thrillers, it might be easy for you to figure out what’s going on, but it is still very satisfying to watch the events unfold. My minor complaint is that there are a lot of characters thrown in at the beginning and for the first 75 pages I had to flip back to confirm who I was reading about, but I caught on quickly. 🔪How to Solve Your Own Murder by Kristen Perrin. *Swipe for Synopsis* 💙 Review - I found this one when I recently visited @hillofcontent in Melbourne and couldn’t walk past it. I love a good mystery novel, especially one that’s a bit different. The premise of this one caught me and the storyline and characters kept me hooked. I really enjoyed following this story and trying to put the pieces of the puzzle together. I thought the writing was great and the twists and turns in the story were well done. While we read about the current timeline, we also read bits of a diary which took us back in time which I always love and meant we could get a better idea of all the characters and their history. It gave me similar vibes to Benjamin Stevenson’s Ernest Hemingway books - it doesn’t have the breaking of the fourth wall, but it gave the vibes. 💜 Recommendation - A fun mystery novel if you’re looking for something to hook you in. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

The Lovely Bones - Alice Sebold ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 The Lovely Bones opens with the brutal murder of 14yr old Susie Salmon. What follows is a novel from Susie’s perspective in heaven watching as her family come to terms with her death. This was book surprisingly uplifting: full of hope and love for Susie’s family moving on after such a devastating life change. We follow Susie as she watches her family come to terms with the her loss and find different ways to grieve and accept a new way of living without her. The writing is so beautiful in this novel and deals with the theme of grief in a uniquely positive way. I loved that the mystery of the unsolved crime was weaved throughout the novel but wasn’t central to the storyline and that the reader is drawn more towards the family and how their lives have been impacted by their loss. Alex Rider was the 14 year old reluctant spy who was always getting into danger. My young distracted self love that these books were full of action excitement and danger. The part of me that was growing up love that they were also filled with cute boys doing impossible things, which I thought was really hot. This book was taken adult me on a wild ride from making me feel like a kid again to feeling for this kid as his best friend is kidnapped and he is pulled back into the dangerous world he wants no part of, but he has to help his friend. Book 10 of 2024 Needful Things by Stephen King ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️4/5 I finished this massive chunk of a book around last month but got too preoccupied and couldn't make a post. I read the first 500 or so pages in physical form and then continued with Audible. There's a new store in Castle Rock called Needful Things. Its proprietor, Leland Gaund, has just about everything you're looking for. There's something hypnotizing about the place, but little do the customers know, they have to pay a big price for whatever they are buying. I loved the book, but it was draggy in places. Then again, what can you expect from such a big book? This was bound to happen. My biggest issue is that the ending seemed too confusing, with so many characters thrown in all at once. Apart from that, it's an excellent book. I loved the entire process of each customer getting something they desired.. and falling prey to Leland Gaunt's tactics. I fell in love with the narrator as I listened to the audiobook, and in the end, I noticed it was Stephen King himself 😍. Well, looks like writing is only one of his talents.

Currently reading a bunch of books. I obviously knew that Kafka will not be disappointing but I won’t be lying when I say that The Details has my full attention. Each chapter is a revelation, I am loving the narrator’s voice. I finished a the Hatmakers last night and had so much fun with this children’s book. I've heard lots of good things about the Neapolitan novels, and after picking this off the shelf a stranger came up to me to sing its praises. I struggled with this one as I felt like the characters were behaving differently to how their did in the other books. But it could also be because I watched the TV series and was getting mixed up. ‘Everyday I say to myself, “Today will be full of life & energy. I first shared the book back in 2017, when I was 52, & thinking about the future (my youngest son was in Year 12 & my eldest at university then). 👩 👩👦👦 As a single Mum, I was looking to add a joyful side hustle to my lovely day job & wanted something that covered the 4 elements of the ikigai Venn diagram: 1) what you love 2) what the world needs 3) what you can get paid for 4) what you are good at I’d already been told the year before I was too old to paddleboard coast to coast & it would be too complex & boring. I was building my confidence with new projects. 🩷 (I finally did SUP Liverpool to Goole in 2019). After doing the exercise & thinking A LOT, I qualified as a Lifeguard (Pool Lifeguard) & Aqua Fit Instructor in 2018. 💦 I loved teaching Aqua Fit so much - music, water, my clients, the dancing! 📚 My Melbourne Book Purchases! 📚 I absolutely LOVED searching through lots of Melbourne book shops while I was there on holiday recently and ended up coming away with some great books! I bought How to Solve your own Murder from the glorious @hillofcontent (which was my fave bookshop) and have already finished this one! ❤️ I bought Jaded from Readings in Carlton and the others I found at the second hand book stalls at the Queen Victoria Market! All fantastic finds and I can’t wait to get stuck in to them all!
Book 16: #sidesplitter by #philwang. So this is one of my #shelterboxbookclub reads. I didn't vote for it initially, but I'm really glad that it got picked! This is a sort-of autobiography slash observational essay about being Phil Wang - a comedian from both #malaysia and #britain. It's honestly really funny. I mainly read it on my lunch breaks at work and was probably snorting into my minestrone in a very distracting fashion. Wang riffs on a number of topics, some more serious than others, and manages to pose some thought-provoking questions. I didn't fully agree on his take on cultural misappropriation (his take was just don't be rude, but I'm more of the get an explicit ok first), but it still made me think. And laugh. Also there were some really lovely insights into Malaysia, which is a country I've (rudely) not thought much about. Perhaps if you're not British you'd also learn a bit about the UK. You'd certainly learn about British breakfast and desserts, which I definitely agree with his take on! Anyway, a good laugh, interesting topics, a whole chapter on food - what more could you want? Hello happy Indie Bookstore Day friends! 🐰🐰 Where are your ancestors from? I’m like 95% Scottish/Irish/English with 3 of my dad’s grandparents coming from Scotland. I’m also a little bit Swedish! 🐰🐰 It was so fun to read Kilt Trip by @akileybooks knowing that such a big part of me is Scottish 😄 ✨Review✨ Travel consultant Addie Macrae is sent to Scotland (where her parents had their honeymoon. Her mom has died so Scotland is kind of a sore subject) to help a family owned business redesign their tours to try to make more money. She meets the son of the owner Logan Sutherland and sparks fly. But Logan doesn’t want to change anything about his company. Will the chemistry they feel overcome the changes that need to be made to the company? I really liked both Addie and Logan. Their chemistry was immediate and sizzling. Addie was determined to do a good job redesigning the tours since the company she works for is relatively new. She starts out certain she knows how to help, but the way that Logan runs his tours and makes connections with the people on the tour starts to make her resolution crumble. Logan really cared about Addie, but was afraid that she would leave after her job and forget about him just like he felt his brothers did when they left the tour company. The plot moved along really well, we got a lot of Scottish history and learned about a lot of well known and not so well known places. There was a really nice mix of the work Addie and Logan were trying to do, the fun tours and the romance. There were 2 narrators for the audiobook. They were both fantastic. Aerodrom Hitrou u Londonu, 1981. godina. Gomila ljudi koja putuje na različita odredišta, makrokosmosom, i koja ne sluti da će njihovim telima - mikrokosmosom, uskoro putovati smrtonosni virus koji kao krajnje odredište ima njihov mozak. Virus besnila. Mutant. Međutim, da li je on posledica našeg lošeg odnosa prema prirodi, njenog dugotrajnog razaranja i ubijanja ili je ipak veštački virus nastao u laboratoriji? U svakom slučaju, delo je čoveka. Vreme inkubacije ovog virusa kraće je od trajanja prosečnog avionskog leta. Sa povećanjem broja slučajeva dolazi do uvođenja karantina i proglašavanja epidemije kojima Pekić navlači jedne, ali skida druge maske sa lica ljudi pokazujući ko su zapravo iznutra. Ukazuje na drugu vrstu besnila koja ne potiče od virusa. I tako dolazi do dvostruke epidemije, epidemije virusa besnila i besnila koje je u ljudima vekovima duboko ukorenjeno i čeka da ispliva u kriznoj situaciji. Struktura romana je takva da nam poput medicinske literature pokazuje kako besnilo nastupa po fazama, kako kod obolelih, tako i kod "zdravih" koji su često opasniji od bolesnih. ,,Besni smo mi. Oni su samo bolesni..." Pekić simbolično bira baš virus Besnila, jer usud za sve bolesne od virusa predstavlja svetlost, a isto tako za besnu-bolesnu civilizaciju koja je u tami, usud je svetlost ljudske duše i probuđena svest. (Da li u romanu postoje likovi koji su izuzeti od svih vrsta besnila, ljudi bez straha koji predstavljaju svetlo, nadu i spas za čovečanstvo?) Slično kao i u romanu ,,Novi Jerusalim" i ovde se ukazuje da se istorija često ponavlja, sa istim (različitim) akterima u glavnoj ulozi jer se u knjizi na trenutke vraćamo u neke od ključnih perioda istorije čovečanstva koji su takođe doveli do apokaliptičnih scenarija i rušili svaku nadu u bolje sutra. ⬇️ #besnilo #borislavpekić #pekić
