Over the past several months, I’ve been on a elevated journey of self-re-discovery and body celebration. It’s been a continual process of un-learning. I’ve grown to appreciate and honor my body for all that it is. This beautiful body has carried me through every season. I’m so thankful for it! This journey has involved a lot of introspection. I’ve had to confront old insecurities and limiting beliefs, and it hasn’t always been easy. There have been moments of doubt and frustration, but I’ve remained committed to pushing through - reminding her that she is worthy of the care she extends to others. One of the biggest shifts for me has been in how I talk to myself. I’ve been practicing self-compassion and speaking to myself with kindness and encouragement. I’ve also been prioritizing self-care and making choices that nourish my body, my soul and my mind. Of course, there have been setbacks along the way. There have been days when I’ve felt discouraged. But I’ve learned to recognize these moments as opportunities for growth, rather than reasons to give up. Looking back on how far I’ve come, I feel a deep sense of gratitude. While I know that this journey is a lifetime commitment, Im excited to continue discovering new ways to love on and celebrate me - all of me! Facing fatphobia. If your in a bigger,fat or plus-size body, regardless of how pretty or well dressed you are- you will encounter people-often strangers commenting or making fun of your body. It can happen on nights out, as it did to me last night. And it can make you pause. Then you sleep, wake up, and realise no one gets your health like you do. Also, would you take life advice from short 25year olds that laugh at fat people? Didn’t think so. It can be tricky though, because your friends think your gorgeous and if they have thin privilege they don’t necessarily realise just by existing in a fat body, you can be a target. Should I ruin my Ed recovery and overshoot process by restricting myself again, just to protect myself from Radom bullies? Younger me would have. I have to be honest. This morning I woke up and I did not love my body. I want to be this fashionista who is super body positive and wants to embrace her fatness and her beautiful curves and her body, as in perfect and as it is, but also magically perfect, and all the ways that a body should be. But I made the decision to accept my body for what it is today, for strong and beautiful as it is, for its grace and all the things that has done for me. Being fat and active is great if that is who you are, or who you aspire to be, but pay attention to how you talk about it. “I’m fat, but I’m strong.” “I’m fat, but I exercise all of the time.” “I’m fat, but I run marathons.” When we say things like this, we position being fat as being less than, a deficit, or somehow incorrect. Your body doesn’t need to come with disclaimers. Ask yourself, what exactly am I trying to justify? What am I trying to prove? Why? And to who? Try these: I’m fat and I’m strong. I’m fat and I love to move my body whenever I can. I’m fat and I’ve done some amazing things many people would assume I can’t do and their limited imagination is their problem, not mine. As we move into the summer months, where internalized body stuff worms its way out of the recesses of the places that stay hidden in the cooler months, please pay attention to the way you speak about your existence and your movement practices. BODY DIVERSITY IS REAL. Your existence is your right to take up space. Your existence is your right to be in your body however you want to. Moving or not. Eating foods we assign health to, or not. How might you enjoy movement more or experience more embodiment if you fully step into your right to have whatever body you have? What might you do or try that you haven’t already done?
