Shelter (2010) Genre : Horror Rating : 7/10 When a psychiatrist stumbles on a patient with multiple personalities, her entire life is turned upside down. The movie takes a dive into the mysterious realm of multiple personality disorder, with Julianne Moore playing a Pittsburgh forensic shrink determined to unravel the enigma surrounding her patient, portrayed by Jonathan Rhys Meyers. As the narrative unfolds, Meyers cycles through various alter egos, offering a mix of high-school drama club theatrics. While Michael Cooney's script echoes shades of other psychological thrillers like "Identity," Swedish directors Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein seem unfazed by narrative gaps, relying on atmospheric settings and borrowed elements from iconic films. Despite Moore's commendable efforts, the movie struggles to elevate itself beyond a conventional tale, leaving it to rest on the shoulders of Meyers' performance, which, despite his talent, doesn't salvage it from its average standing. The jumpscares were plentiful but overall, this movie was okay, not the best but not the worst either. The story was fun but again, there were a little too many gaps in it to be enjoyable. So, its completely up to you if you want to watch this movie or not! The Wicker Man (2006): An American folk horror about Nicolas Cage going to a matriarchal island colony in Puget Sound to try to find his ex’s lost daughter. One of the worst movies I have ever seen. It is always inadvisable to remake a classic, especially one as quirky and nuanced as Robin Hardy and Anthony Schaffer’s 1973 The Wicker Man. I do not know how or why this film got made. Director/writer Neil LaBute does not seem to understand what made the original good and creepy. Some of the dialogue is verbatim, but what he chose to keep and to change is baffling. The script is stilted and amateurish, the direction is haphazard, and the creep factor is absent. The talents of Ellen Burstyn, Leelee Sobieski, Frances Conroy, and David Lynch’s favorite composer Angelo Badalamenti are criminally underused. LaBute really should have employed an editor or a dramaturg to explain the word “quixotic” and its related idioms to him. I’m not sure if LaBute was aspiring to feminism here, but all he achieved was reinforcing the idea that independent women cannot be trusted and are hazardous to the sanctity of manhood. Its saving graces are Cage’s typically unhinged melodrama and the fact that it is just horrible enough to be funny. Superman: Unbound (2013) was another decent entry in the DC Animated Universe. Brainiac is a great Superman villain but when you really break him down he’s just alien Lex Luthor. But like I said before, I’m glad Luthor was not in this. I did enjoy seeing Supergirl in this even though her costume made no sense. She was a little too teenage rebel too because there were times where she was straight up ready to look people. It’s crazy to me how there is a merry go round of voice actors for Superman and the supporting cast in these films. Kevin Conroy got so lucky when everyone was like yea this guy is Batman. Matt Bomer did do a good job though for what it’s worth. John Noble was a great casting choice for Brainiac as well, his voice just screams evil. I do understand that Superman is one of the most popular DC characters but how many movies does this guy need? Same with Batman, like everyone knows these characters can we please have some other heroes in the spotlight. Even when it’s a team up movie those two always take precedent. Esta película fue una grata sorpresa del año pasado y que se ha ganado un lugar especial con el público. Tanto por su historia como trasfondo en que no dejo a nadie indiferente. Asique hablemos dé. Nimona: Esta es la historia de Ballister (Riz Ahmed) quien es un caballero perfecto, hasta que es engañado y vuelto el asesino de la reina, asique deberá pruebas de que no es un regicida. Y no estará solo, ya que lo acompañara una niña muy especial, Nimona (Chloë Grace Moretz) que le mostrara que no todo es lo que parece. Dirigida por Nick Bruno y Troy Quane, adaptando la novela gráfica de ND Stevenson, en que nos regalan una deconstrucción del cuento clásico de hadas y un mensaje muy importante en esta divertida historia. La narrativa es algo peculiar. Ya que estamos en un mundo de ciencia ficción con un estilo medieval muy marcado, denotado por la calidad de cuentos de hadas. En este mundo de caballeros y reinas, también rigen los teléfonos y redes sociales. En ese contexto, seguimos al protagonista que es el arquetipo perfecto del caballero medieval que al verse enfrentado a todo lo que juro proteger, se le abrirá el mundo a nuevas posibilidades gracias a Nimona. Que es sencillamente la mejor, esta pequeña bola de energía anárquica que solo quiere destruir cosas, encierra uno de los mensajes más fuertes y relevantes actualmente. La discriminación y el prejuicio sobre la razón y la comprensión. Siendo interpretado en cualquier ambiente social en que se viva. Llevado de forma muy orgánica y divertida. Ya que el humor de la película, tan frenético y alocado hace que sea dinámica. Aparte de que si tiene momentos serios que elevan el drama y la situación. Creando un fuerte vinculo con sus protagonistas que los hace memorables. All-Star Superman (2011) was not much of a standout when it comes to the DC Animated films. It had some cool sequences and ideas but it just felt so incredibly rushed that it hurt the movie. I feel like years worth of character development happened in what felt like a week movie time. I know it wasn’t a week because they state it’s been longer but there is literally no other way of knowing. There were just a lot of strange choices like that. Lex Luthor, even though he is overused in all of these Superman properties was the best part of the film. He is always ten steps ahead of everyone else, that’s what makes him such an amazing villain, amongst other things. However, Superman greatly outsmarted him in this one which honestly felt unreal to me. I don’t know how a comic book movie can feel unreal but y’all know what I mean. A Julliard trained actor, Frances got her start in theater and small character parts on film and tv, but it wasn’t until 2001 when she landed the role as matriarch Ruth Fisher in the groundbreaking show Six Feet Under that she got the recognition she richly deserves. That show holds a very near and dear spot in my heart. When people ask “what’s the greatest television show of all time,” the usual answers are The Sopranos or Game of Thrones, but for me it’s probably SFU. It influenced so much of my adolescence and young adulthood. And Frances is a marvel in that role. Fun side note, I physically ran into her as she was exiting a grocery store one time in New Orleans. Nimona (2023) dir. Nick Bruno & Troy Quane After being framed for regicide, a knight tries to prove his innocence while working with a mischievous teen who just so happens to be the shapeshifting creature that he has been trained to destroy. Another Oscar movie in the books, this time an animated feature that I'm fairly certain won't get the Oscar, but I was still very impressed by this - and I could be surprised, though I think "The Boy and the Heron" will get it. As I said, I was very impressed by this one and it reminded me of late 90's/early 2000's Disney in the best of ways. For one, the gay protagonist was a surprise for me, but that comes with a big "however", mind you. However, he is a very boring protagonist and is just a little...Gary-Sue for me? Nimona was the more interesting character and she serves as the emotional arc of the story. So Ser Ballister did get some points from me in the end as he starts to gain more confidence/sass, but it's kind of a case of too little too late for me. His boyfriend was a bit more interesting, being a descendant of the kingdom's fabled legend. A lot of his conflict is internal and there is a great sense of depth to his character even though he's hardly around and rarely says a whole lot. The villain was also refreshing, although I saw it coming from scene 1. I pointed at the screen, told Allen, and thirty minutes later they have the big dramatic reveal and you know Leonardo DiCaprio in OUATIH? Yeah, that was me lol. Chloe Moretz did fantastic here and she reminded me of my Raul character on Bad Movies Among Us. I'm sure the two of them would hit it off real well.
