When chaos comes, 🌪️ and it will... Focus on what you can control. The last time chaos really hit me, I was traveling. And although I was out of my "typical routine," I found it super calming to stick to my routine as best as I could. Even on the days when I wanted to stay in bed and cry in the fetal pose, I got up. I washed my face and did my morning skin care routine. I made sure I stayed hydrated (crying is dehydrating!) Those water bottles with the hourly measurements on them were particularly helpful for me during this time, as my mind was elsewhere. I had a healthy breakfast ready for me, which meant going to the grocery store the night before and also bringing what I could from home like protein powder, bars, apples etc (all the things). It meant prioritizing exercise- a walk a workout. I mostly ran at this particular time though, it helped clear my mind. And I did my best to get good sleep. And if I couldn't sleep, I'd atleast journal to empty thoughts out of my head. Breathwork and meditation were also very soothing during this time. Especially in the middle of the night if I woke up with anxiety. One hand on the ❤️ and one hand on the belly. Just breathe. And yes I'm sure there are times when laying in bed and just crying it out will serve you well, so get it out and when you're done... Get up. Wash your face and get moving. Girl, Wash Your Face 🧼 Nonfiction: 3/5 🖋️ Self help: 3/5 🥹 Audio book alert! This was one of the first audiobooks I listened to on Hoopla, LA County’s amazing app, that’s like a digital library at my fingertips! I’m gonna rip the bandaid off and share that it wasn’t for me. I didn’t really relate to the author’s experiences and I didn’t know enough about the book to have known that it was about life lessons they had learned from their own experiences. I did appreciate the fact that they came from a small, rural area, though! I chose it because a few years ago I remember seeing it posted everywhere and thought that it should be added to my TBR list if the media was obsessed with it. I never got to it in book form, so when the audiobook was available, I went for it. It did teach me that I like listening to nonfiction audiobooks. Especially since I prefer reading fiction in physical book for. So, I’m gonna call it a win overall and consider it a life hack 🤪 #FeedTheBookWorm . . . If someone in your life does this to you and it bothers you I see you and I get it. My INVITATION for you is to let it be an opportunity to help them get curious. Try “what’s happening for you internally right now?” Then (and most importantly) just listen and validate. DO NOT tell them they shouldn’t be worried (bc it’s their body’s implicit memory stored in their physiology that is telling them to be worried, not their logical brain) DO NOT just say “I’m fine” (especially when you’re not actually fine bc it just confuses them even more and teaches them not to trust their own intuition). When they tell you what they are observing in you, TRY to just listen. If they say “you’re just being quiet” or “you seem distant”. Just listen and get curious. Maybe ask (with *compassion, not judgment*) “what’s it like for you when I’m quiet?” Or “I’m curious what is the story you’re telling yourself when it seems like I’m distant or quiet.” Validate them and let them know whatever they are feeling is okay and makes sense. And then ask “Is there anything you need from me?” Try to get curious instead of annoyed, frustrated or judgmental. Monitoring other people’s emotions at some point helped them survive something that felt unsafe to their NS. Now they’re reflexively (involuntarily) hypervigilant as a result. This deserves so so much compassion. The teacher in me says, "If you're thinking this, chances are others around you are as well, so ask the question!" I had this conversation the other day with a friend who asked what my thoughts are on washing your face in the shower. I responded with these three points and she said it was helpful so perhaps you'll think so as well! As I've taken the dive into learning where my perspective really comes from, it really all comes down to transepidermal water loss (TEWL). To combat TEWL, your skin needs to be saturated. The shower IS a great place for that to happen (as long as the temp is right). HOWEVER, the second you get out of the shower, that water starts to evaporate, leaving your skin more dehydrated than before. That's when the cleanliness piece comes in because anything that's gotten on your skin while in the shower is now crusting onto your face. Commit your shower time to your body skin and leave your face skin to a post-shower routine.
