This is a hard one. Deep down, I would like it if everyone had nice thoughts each time they thought of me but the truth is - I'm not meant for everyone and neither are you. There will always be someone out there whose created an opinion of you based on what they saw and heard. While for the most part, it doesn't matter, sometimes I've found their opinions validating or helpful. What is not helpful is ruminating on others opinions and letting their opinions rule your decision making process. When worrying about what someone else thinks starts to show up, I've found these things to be helpful: 1. Remember your why - the reason behind your actions. 2. Is there value in their opinion? If you can learn something from their take, by all means: think on it and adjust if necessary. 3. Remind yourself that you know who you are and if you don't then keep working on getting to know you. The more you are confident in who you are the less other's opinions shake you. So let them think what they want and if it is helpful - great! If it's mean or unwarranted, remember they most likely have some reason for forming their thought. With too many parallels to overlook, Crooks (seemingly) exposes her former employer, The Hollis Company, in this coming of age story, Under the Influence. The story follows a young woman, early in her career, as she ambitiously takes on a role working for a self-help mega-influencer. Through the story, we see acts of empowerment, inspiration,encouragement, and generosity that are quickly replaced with greed, a toxic work environment, and hostility. The main character in this story closely resonates with the author, Noelle Crook’s. You’ll find similarities between #girlboss Rachel Hollis and the mega-influencer antagonist character, Charlotte Green. While we’ve probably all experienced a #bad boss or #toxicworkplace , the author calls out her former employer and all her toxic behaviors; the employer/employee tension and hostility is hard to ignore in this story! 🫣 While I didn’t find this story to be exceptionally deep or dimensional, I do feel there are powerful pointers for those ambitiously paving their way in a cutthroat industry.
