The thought of flower sellers popping up in every town, suburb, village or rural community is a shocking idea to some people. A local flower shop doesn't mean the flowers are local. Most flowers sold in the world are mass-produced and travel long distances. And, in the process they lose their charm, scent and true natural beauty. Last year I grew dahlias in pots. Usually after the first frost any dahlias in pots are lifted and stored in the shed and any in the ground get a good mulch. Last autumn though I was still recovering from the accident I had and there were other more pressing things needing doing so I just cut the the dahlias down and put the pots in the greenhouse and have ignored them all winter. I have no idea where a lot of the soil has gone in some of the pots, and all of them have plenty of other things growing in them. This morning I tipped all the pots out to see if any of the dahlia tubers had survived. Surprisingly most of them had. I've re-potted them, given them a good drink and put them back in the greenhouse until after the last frosts. Spring is rushing in at speed this year, thank goodness! The birds are singing Spring songs & ponds are full of frog spawn. Yesterday, the first of these stunning Snakeshead Fritillaries popped open, making Spring official here. I keep a brief note of dates when I start to cut flowers, & estimate many are opening 2-3 weeks ahead of 2023. The dainty Wild Narcissi began flowering in late February. They look like a 'Wordsworth' image by the burn this week (albeit on a very small scale!) I began cutting Pieris, Forsythia & Wild Plum blossom at about the same time too. As Mother's Day was early, I didn't expect to have any of our flowers to include in the bouquets - but we did! Now I'm hoping for some Sunshine soon... Before you even think about arranging, your flowers need water. Just like us after a long day, they're thirsty! Give them clean water and let them soak it up for a few hours. Timing is Everything, but you can choose the best time for you and the flowers. Morning Harvest: Snip in the AM, arrange in the PM. Overnight Rest: Cut one day, arrange the next. Evening Harvest: Perfect for after work; they'll drink all night- this is what I recommend when you have a busy day or a day job. Key: Avoid the Midday Sun It's not great for cutting flowers. It's like running a marathon in a heatwave—too stressful! Remember, well-hydrated flowers are happy flowers. They'll reward you by staying fresh and fabulous longer. 🌱 The nursery greenhouse is filling up with plenty of seed sowing and potting on this week. The soil in the field is saturated, I cannot get on the ground so I am a long way behind on my sowing and planting schedule. I have accepted that this year I will not be able to do any early direct sowing so all spring seeds will have to be sown in the greenhouse. Yesterday I pruned & mulched a few more Roses, feeding them lots of goodness to set them up for a stunning show again this Summer. Not that the Rose bushes show much appreciation... My hands are crisscrossed with scratches, despite wearing gloves. Pruning Roses is a bit like tickling a friendly Tom cat who purrs, winds it's way around your legs, then rolls over to have his tummy tickled... & wham! those claws are straight in to the soft fleshy bit of your hand. If you've ever had a cat, you'll know just what I mean. Anyway, no hard feelings towards the Roses, they're worth a bit of pain. And today a picture of deliciously scented Roses in sunshine is exactly what I need. This was a new one planted last year, & hopefully it'll be producing plenty of blooms soon.

I’ve compiled a list of my favorite beginner-friendly cut flowers to grow. After 16 years, these are still always on my list and some of my favorite garden treasures to design with. Comment “abundant” and I’ll dm you the link to all 18 of my favorites, with my tips for growing and harvesting these so you can avoid some common mistakes! 1. Zinnias are abundant, bloom in a multitude of colors, and don’t ship well, making them an ideal flower to grow for a local market! 2. Cosmos- a true garden treasure. Its ethereal qualities replace anemones and butterfly ranunculus beautifully. 3. Sunflowers - the quintessential summer flower. Bright, cheery, colorful. Look for a branching variety for small, cut and come again blooms. 4. Sweet peas- vintage, fragrant perfection. There is a reason this is a favorite. It always adds ruffly, dancing movement to an arrangement. Will always be in my fields. 5. Rudebeckia- the rust and terra cotta colors are always a favorite. 6. Annual phlox drummundii- the perfect bridging flower with these phenomenal colors. I love the caramel colors. She comes in multiple colors, but caramel is my most popular. 7. Dahlias- the queen of fall focal flowers. She is a beauty in every form and color. Do be sure to make sure she lasts as a cut- not all varieties are perfect cut flowers #cafeaulait 😅 (I love her, but she requires lots of pampering!) In between the rain, there has been some gorgeous snippets of sunshine to enjoy seed sowing in the greenhouse. I do not start seed sowing until after Valentines Day because there are not enough daylight hours before then. Sowing seeds too early can result in seedlings growing too tall for their strength as they search for sunlight. Hi, I'm Heather 👋🏻 It's been a minute since I've introduced myself, so let me give you a short rundown about me & what you will find here at @lifegardenstyle I'm a small town, Missouri farm girl who got a formal education in horticulture, then landed "in the city" to pursue a career in landscape design. I've been part of the green industry for over 17 years and currently hold the professional titles of: Seasonal Container Garden Designer, Flower Farmer, Landscape Designer & Garden Educator. 'It will never rain roses: when we want to have more roses, we must plant more roses' So wrote George Eliot (pen name for Mary Ann Evans, Author of Victorian classics such as 'MiddleMarch' & 'Silas Marner') And she was so right. It takes a couple of years for a rose to get into it's full stride for cut flowers, & if you cut a lot as I do, their life is shorter than when grown to admire in a garden setting only. This Winter I've been adding more to my collection - mostly planted in the few frost free days earlier this month. About another dozen to go in still, currently heeled in waiting. There's nothing quite like the scent of a British-grown Rose in a Summer wedding bouquet, & I adore using them. Maybe I'll add a few more? Our Wedding Calendar for 2024 is filling fast this month. Den vill ha stöd att klättra på och kan bli ganska hög. Enda minuset är att den saknar doft men den är underbar i buketter! Bild 3 är stockrosen Majorette Double Champagne med den finaste färgen jag sett på en stockros någonsin. En cremefärgad dubbel variant som jag gärna vill ha i trädgården på sensommaren. 💗 I bakgrunden ser ni en stor vinranka på friland som bildar ett tak till vår pergola. Completely gratuitous pictures of Sweet Peas, just because... I've started off a batch today for the polytunnel & if all goes well, it'lll not be long before I'm cutting them by the bucketful again. I select varieties for their legendary scent (after all what is a Sweet Pea without that?), good stem length & their colours. I think almost every wedding bouquet I make has Sweet peas from late June to early September! I love the subtle stripey ones best but would never be without the lavenders, the pinks, the watermelons... And of course, there are always white ones too. 'Long stemmed 'Aphrodite' is my go to variety for wedding bouquets. Which is your favourite?

Anemones have been planted in their new home in the tunnel (some gorgeous, yet redundant Belfast sinks I found kicking about the yard). These corms were pre sprouted in Autumn and will hopefully flower mid March. This crop die back in summer, so it is hard to manage the ground where they grow for the rest of the year, without damaging the dormant corms. I am hoping my sinks will solve this problem.🤞 Ps. 💓Lade, tiden vi lever i krever lading. Jeg tenker på folkem0rdet som fortsatt utspiller seg foran øynene våre, og jeg tenker på årstiden. Det er mørkt, det er pinadø tjue minus, og verden brenner. 💓Så jeg lader mellom slagene. Det jeg vier absolutt mest fritid til disse dagene, er ✨frøsåing✨ av visse sorter, planlegging og drømmer: to balkonger og en parsell ligger som blanke ark. Minst førti nye sorter har funnet veien til min postkasse i løpet av romjulen. 💓Igjen vet jeg hvor heldig jeg er, åpenbart i verdenssammenheng, men også i norsk skala. Det å i tillegg ha en så flammende hobby som dyrking er for meg, er jeg så takknemlig for. Det er blitt et område hvor jeg er så nerd at øyenbryn blir lett (dog vennlig) hevet, hvor jeg merker at andre blir fjerne i blikket og faller av (synes de ikke det er like spennende som meg, hvahvahva?), og hvor ups, der snakket jeg litt lenge om tomater igjen. 💓Ja, jeg kan snakke lenge om tomater. Jeg kan snakke lenge om chili. Jeg kan snakke lenge om sorter valmuer og hvor viktig det kjennes å ha nok sommerblomster forkultivert, hvor ekstatisk jeg blir av å finne en ny variant i frønettbutikkene, hvor ivrig det klør i såfingrene. 💓Her er en liten årskavalkade med lyspunkt fra dyrkesesongen 2023. Planting Amaryllis bulbs in pots today. These lovely plump bulbs were half price online last week, so I treated myself to 10, all white. Call it my Christmas present to myself as I always know exactly what I would like! Planted in 2 batches, 2 weeks apart, I hope to have them flowering in late February - early March. That's still a lean time for British-grown cut flowers & I can enjoy these in the pots indoors or cut stems to put in a vase. To speed growth up, I soaked bulbs in water before potting into very gritty compost. After flowering, the bulbs can be rested & then started off again for next winter.

Lifting Dahlias. One of the biggest (& dirtiest) jobs in our Flower Farm year & the reason I've been rather absent on here of late. And to be honest, this last few weeks it doesn't look much like the sun & flower filled version of flower farming usually seen in a magazine photoshoot or on here! Real life is much less glamourous, I'm afraid... We grow hundreds of Dahlias every year, so it's time-consuming to lift, clean & store tubers safely until next Spring. Last year, torrential rain in November followed by a very cold snap in early December made it a difficult, unpleasant task. So we made it a priority to do it early this year. It's been much easier. Almost all Dahlias are out of the ground now, moved into the tiny tunnel for processing. Tubers are looking good & strong so I'm optimistic they'll bring a good crop of flowers again next year. There may not be much colour to show you just now but the work goes on behind the scenes. I'm very aware what I do (or don't do) today, this week or this month, has a direct consequence on how many flowers there are to cut next Summer. Some days it's tempting to stay inside out of the weather but the work won't get done if we do! And just now, it's looking like we're on track with the Dahlias... & I'm looking forward to the colour returning!
