The caterpillars have formed cocoons, so Iโve transferred them to the net basket. Only one was attached to a lid, the other three were in the containers. I removed what I could of the webbing and tried to pick the cocoons up with a stick. Only one came out, as the webbing got attached to the stick. Itโs not moving, so Iโm thinking it might be dead. All of our butterflies were released today. 3 out of 4 flew off quite quickly to pastures new. A fourth remained in the garden and sat on some alliums We love this activity every year. The children get a lot from it seeing the caterpillars grow and develop their chrysalis before emerging and learning to fly.

We started off by ensuring that our caterpillars were in their cup, along with their food and away from sunlight. The caterpillars can grow up to ten times their original size!. After around a week, the caterpillars entered the chrysalis stage, the children were so excited to wait for them to turn into butterflies! We watched them each day and made sure that they were transferred into the butterfly habitat once hardened. As you can see by our pictures, we now have our butterflies!. Our children have been so helpful feeding them sugar water and fresh fruit so that they can drink the juice as they live purely on a liquid diet. Did you know that butterflies actually taste food with their feet?!!!!. They have sensors on their feet that allow them to find food. This single solitary butterfly weed plant brought me so much joy last year ๐๐ฑ Watching the monarch butterflies lay eggs that hatched into caterpillars that proceeded to chomp away at the sole butterfly weed in this property made me so happy that I went ahead and planted 15 more plants in a nearby garden bed because why not?! ๐๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ Itโs hard to not feel helpless these days with the state of society, the wretched agenda of the book burners and banners and whatnot but the good news is we are not helpless. Iโm doing what I can from where I am, and that means planting more butterfly weeds for the monarchs. Helping the planet is helping us all, and thatโs what I can do. So if anyone needs any butterfly weed, I got you. The seed pods forming on the crop out front are going to fuel a whole new generation of plants to attract and support generations of pollinators. Here are pictures of Leah and Iโs journey with our first round of growing butterflies. We were given 3 caterpillars from my friend Ashley at work. One day we surprisingly had a 4th caterpillar show up (a butterfly must have laid an egg on our milkweed before we bought it). Overall we had a 50% success rate, 2 out of the 4 survived their chrysalis stage and turned into beautiful Monarchs. The easiest way to find these is to follow the giant poops they leave on your munched plants. Thatโs how I found this one. Nursery Update! ๐๐ฆ #Toddlers have been growing butterflies! The children observed how our caterpillars transformed into butterflies observing and learning about their life cycle. We observed them daily as we waited for them to form their cocoon. After a few days they turned into beautiful butterflies! The children loved feeding them different fruits such as oranges and apples and observed they as they fly around. When the time was ready we said goodbye to our friends and watched them fly away into the world. This supported their understand of the world as they learnt step by step how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly by reading โCaterpillar to Butterflyโ. So the girls have been growing caterpillars the last 7 days! They have been watching them get bigger and bigger, slowly move around and shed exoskeletons. And now today they were excited to see them finally all climb to the top and start the chrysalis process!! They girls can't wait to see their Lil projects become butterflies!! Caterpillars ๐ we discovered hundreds of them on our veg plot when we returned from holiday. They have captivated the children who have enjoyed watching them eat the leaves and wiggle around. We have re-honed some and brought others inside to study them over the coming weeks. How caterpillars will wrap themselves in a cocoon and then go through the process of metamorphosis, some of the details arenโt always clarified.
