J'hésite toujours beaucoup avant de monter la tente. Quand le spot choisi n'est pas à l'abri de tous les regards, je ne la monte qu'à la nuit tombée et la première chose que je fais au réveil - toujours aux aurores - c'est lever le camp. Tout remballer avant de prendre le temps. Laisser l'endroit intact, comme si je n'avais jamais été là. C'est ça le signe d'un bivouac réussi : pas la photo Instagram, pas la belle météo, pas la nuit confortable au chaud dans son duvet. L'objectif, c'est de faire en sorte que le bivouac ait l'air de n'avoir jamais existé ailleurs que dans nos têtes. The Jesusita Trail in Santa Barbara is always stunning 🤩 It sure has changed since I hiked there last on January 1st, 2023. Some of the trail was not recognizable and one point along the creek was not visible and just a trail of rocks. The crossings were fun and it was nice to hear the creek gently flowing. Of note there’s a lot of poison hemlock and even more poison oak along most of the trail so beware. We saw one snake who quickly slithered away and we could not identify. Quite a few fence lizards, butterflies and a variety of wildflowers here and there. It may have snowed yesterday in Lake Tahoe but summer is still on its way! I cannot wait to be hitting up trails like this in a month or so! The Hikers 365 Challenge: Before heading back home, we decided to get one last hike in on the Quarry Trail to Limestone Rockwalls trail. This trail had some cool features, one being the Hawver Mined Cave, while closed off, there are talks about eventually opening it once it’s been made safe to enter. In 1906 some high school kids found bones and prehistoric fossils inside the cave. For now it’s a cool space to get some natural air conditioning on a hot day when the winds kick up from inside the cave. As you hike a bit further on, it’s like you’ve entered a completely different landscape. Large rocks shoot up from the ground and rock climbers are testing their skills all around. It was so cool to watch them. Make sure you pack some extra water on a hot day! There are some areas to go down to the river, but it’s quite the scramble down. Note: From the trail you can see the Foresthill Bridge, which soars 730 feet above the stream bed of the American River’s North Fork, is reputed to be the 3rd highest bridge in the United States and the tallest in California. The Hikers 365 Challenge: This hike had some really cool features like a suspension bridge and a spiral native garden. We learned so much about the native people on this trail. The trail name is the Deer Creek Tribute Trail. 📍Indigenous lands of the Nisenan tribes. The Nisenan (pronounced nish-n-non) were extremely sophisticated and efficient in their use of nature’s resources. Food, clothing, medicine, poison, and shelter materials could all come from one plant species during the course of its life cycle and with the changing seasons. For example one sign posted said, the Soap Root bulb can be baked, peeled and eaten like an artichoke. It can be boiled to use as glue. Dried with its protective hairs, creating a brush used to sweep the meal in and out of grinding holes. The meal of the crushed bulb can be mixed into pools of water to stun the fish. The fish would then float to the surface for easy capture. The meal can also be made into a poultice to treat poison oak or mixed with water to create soap. The Elderberry can be used as food, tea, a soothing medicine for the stomach, seasoning for meat and fish. The larvae of the Longhorn Elderberry beetle hollow out the branches, which are then used to make flutes. Elderberry flutes and clappers are central to Nisenan music and ceremony. This was just a small portion of what we learned from this trail. Like I said, we learned a lot!! It was awesome! I highly recommend checking out this trail. The Hikers 365 Challenge: On our weekend road trip, before our destination we decided to go down into Donner Lake (5,900 feet in elevation at the lake) to hike the China Cove Trail Loop. It was warm and the lake was beautiful with its sandy beach, accompanied by snow. What a contrast. We were prepared for some snow/ice hiking with our crampons and hit the trail. The trail takes you around several campgrounds, however they were covered in snow, easily 5 feet deep in some places. We stepped carefully so as not to posthole (definition: If you’re postholing while hiking, it means your legs are sinking deep into the snow with every step — usually up past your knees or even up to your hip, which robs you of most of your mobility and makes hiking, even a short distance, very exhausting), though we did get almost up to our knees a couple of times. We made it back to the car, enjoyed some snacks and headed onto my sister’s house for the weekend. More to come…as we got in 3 hikes in 3 days and it was fantastic!! 📍Indigenous lands of the Washo tribes. Donner Summit was a summer meeting place for other tribes in this area including the Maidu (Nisenan), Miwok and Washo (Washoe) tribes. The mountains are my happy place😌 These beauties are the Sawteeth out in Idaho and I probably could have stayed there forever🤩 One thing I miss about traveling out west is how BIG everything is and much SPACE is in between each city. Forgot to post these. Went with Alysha to ft worth nature center and animal refugee - cost 7$ for me and my dog to get in. It was beautiful but easy short hikes only. This was the only animal we saw (besides the bison in the cage) but she pointed out maybe we were just too late to see deer. I prefer free parks. It’s nature afterall. The Hikers 365 Challenge: On our way down Highway 1, I have always wanted to stop at this Visitor Center. Open again after the 2020 fires, the land is slowly regenerating and nature is making a come back. The wildflowers were showing off, and will be even more so over the next month. We hiked the short Hoover Loop Trail (the Marsh Trail was too muddy and the bridge hasn’t been put back up yet for Spring) which takes you up above the highway, with beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean below. Golden Valley Open Space was green and lush with a beautiful sunset 🤩🙌🏼🌄Although invasive and despised by many, the mustard flowers provided some vibrant splashes of gold. It is not entirely useless, as it is edible and can be used for survival purposes. We saw our first rattler just laying in a trance across the trail as the sun was setting. Luckily we saw it and avoided stepping on it. A word of caution ⚠️ with all this rain I discovered 5 American dog ticks hitchhiked onto my head somehow. Frankie surprisingly had none. The first time in many years of living and hiking in California that I have ever encountered a tick. Two latched and the others crawled. It felt wonderful to hit the trail again with my friend Zulma. It's been since August since our last hike together. We picked Los Pinetos for its diverse features, including the view, distance, elevation, oak trees, and good maintenance. Though I'm not one to grumble, this trail is shared, meaning you'll encounter hikers, mountain bikers, and occasionally horse riders. Today, we crossed paths with several groups of mountain bikers. Although I've used this trail for years without any incidents, today a few bikers came around a corner at high speed without warning. Thankfully, Zulma and I managed to dodge them quickly. It was a close call, but everyone was unscathed. The Hikers 365 Challenge: A weekend away with the hubby brought us to Muir Woods. He is 3.5 months out since having knee replacement surgery and is doing fabulous. We hiked 3.54 miles today, sometimes in light rain, and definitely moments in the mud. It was cold in the mountains, a chilly 44F at 2pm; we could see our breath. But so beautiful. Everything was fresh and dewy! Did you know Muir Woods was a setting in Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) and the first act of War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), though all 3 films were filmed in British Columbia. And most Star Wars fans believe the real-life backdrop for the forest moon of Endor exists in Muir Woods. Sadly, that’s not true either. Worse, the California forest that appeared in the film was mostly obliterated after production. 😳 Most of the well-known scenes were shot on private land owned by a lumber company. I didn’t know that either! Learned a lot today! The more you know…⭐️🌈⭐️ 📍Indigenous lands of the Coast Miwok, the original people of this land. They lived throughout this area for thousands of years, managing the land and its natural resources. They set fires to enrich the forest and grasslands as natural fires did, shaping the forest now known as Muir Woods. As Europeans arrived in the 1700s, they displaced native people from their lands and moved them into Spanish missions.
