My favorite detour off the Camino Portugués was my morning trek up to Santa Lúzia to visit the picturesque cathedral above Viana do Castelo. The route up this hilltop was a knee-busting 655 stairs. But thanks to the rain and the early hour, I had it almost completely to myself. After enjoying the bird’s eye views of the city and the ocean, I rode the elevador (funicular tram) back down to town. Observation Point is accessible through the northwest corner of @zionponderosa We started our hike from the East Mesa Trailhead and hiked the 11.3km / 7mile out and back loop which took us roughly 2.5 hours to complete (a bit longer if you want to stop for photos) The path is well managed and only moderately steep. You'll get a similar view to Angel's landing, in fact you can see it if you look close on the right-hand side of the final image. This view looks south which makes it a good option for sunset or sunrise when the lighting is low in the sky. There are a few opportunities along the way for photos, but the best views will be at the end of the hike, so don't forget your camera! If you drive in you'll need a good offroad vehicle or SUV with 4WD, OR if you're visiting for the day you can take the shuttle from Zion Ponderosa Ranch and leave your car in the parking lot. 9️⃣ We all slept in the shelter last night because the temperatures were predicted below freezing with 26 mph wind gusts 🥶. There’s always a fine line between it being better to sleep in the shelter versus your tent during weather like this. Your tent will flap all night long and drive you nuts, but will stay warmer than in the drafty shelter. I was happy with my decision and slept soundly until I had to get up at 3 AM to use the, uhh, facilities 🌳. I’d slept well and stayed really warm until that point and when I was outside the shelter, it didn’t feel as cold as I imagined. However, when Greta 🐾 and I went back to bed, she could not get warm. She shivered for the next three hours getting periodically up to turn circles in an effort to find a warmer spot, and I continually had to readjust her quilt trying to keep her warm. The low was 31° and surprisingly, we all stayed comfortable, except Greta 🐾. Once the sun came up, it warmed up really quickly 🌞. We enjoyed coffee and set out for the day. A few other hikers said there was a mouse in the shelter early in the evening, but Greta 🐾 growled and ran it off 🤣. I slept through it, but if had to guess, she actually did the Greta Grumble because she was annoyed it was making noise and interrupting her sleep 😆. I’ve never heard her growl. We started off with around 2000’ climb up Kelly Knob ⛰️. I waited for breakfast in the sun ☀️ at the top. By afternoon, it was around 60° with few clouds in the sky ⛅️. We ended our day by walking a couple of miles through mown pastures, which was a nice change of scenery. This was the final day of hiking with Deez 🥜 and Renchead 🔧, and we arrived to our pick up spot a little early. If you're visiting Utah make sure you stop to visit Canyonlands. We shot at this spot minutes before sunset to get that golden hour glow. For the first photo we used a natural break in the rocks to create a frame around the butte. For the cliff photo we shot at a long focal length of 200mm to compress the scene, and for the landscape shot standing next to the cliff we shot it wide angle at approximately 24mm so we could get the foreground with all the rock texture. Whenever you shoot remember to test a variety of focal lengths to get as many different photos as possible! 8️⃣ Another chilly morning! It’s taken a few years, but I’m getting better at starting out cold. After a few miles, I started hiking in only my Alpha layer on top. This is one of the most incredible and versatile pieces of gear. Alpha Direct is an “active layer” meaning that it keeps you comfortably warm when you’re moving. It breaths, so it doesn’t stay wet with sweat or moisture from the air, but it does NOT keep you warm as a stand alone layer when you’re still. However, you can put a wind/water proof layer over it and stay super warm without having to carry several layers clothing. We stopped at Wind 🌬️ Rock and then cruised on to camp. It was overcast and cool, and a lot of hikers were off trail for the night because the temps were going to dip so low. 7️⃣ Woke up around 10pm (day 6️⃣) completely socked in. Then it started pouring 🌧️ after midnight. You could hear the railroad in Pearisburg from the shelter. It’s always weird hearing “city” sounds when you’re sleeping in the woods. By morning, the rain had stopped but the fog was still thick. We hiked into Pearisburg, which included passing by a landfill and Purina plant 🤢. We crossed under US460 🛣️, and then along it over the New River before popping back in the woods. From there we had another mile of trail before road walking to Angel’s Rest Hiker Haven (Hostel) to meet Deez and Renchead and heading to Dairy Queen. (Don’t tell @sonicdrivein, I might lose my sponsorship 🤣.) We all had ice cream 🍨 before going back to @woodsholehostel for yoga 🧘♀️ and dinner. I wonder if my squatter’s rights apply at hostels 🤔. 6️⃣ We replanned the next four days based on water and ease of shuttling. At this point, nothing is happening as planned 😆, but life is always better in the mountains, so we’re rolling with it. It was a fantastic day of hiking! I felt great, it was cooler out, and I had a new water filter + bladder, so I never ran out of water 🙌. I was able to see a beautiful sunrise 🌅 before I set out and an amazing sunset ☀️ from our campsite before bed. It rained 🌧️ overnight, but Greta 🐾 and I were in a shelter (not our tent ⛺️), and I was so thankful. Extra special thanks 🤩 to Deez @steph_greenbean for capturing photo 8 🫣. 4️⃣ - 5️⃣ I don’t have a single pic from day four 😞. I spent the day sick from a combo of mistakenly eating something with gluten 🚫🌾 and being dehydrated 💧the first three days on trail. I haven’t felt so ill in a couple years and I really thought I was just going to have to drive home and scrap the rest of the trip. I woke up on day five and decided to try to get some miles in, but after packing up, I bailed and decided to stay at the hostel for another day. I knew I’d be able to make up the miles pretty simplistically, and I still felt pretty 🤢 🤕. I was given a work-for-stay option, which was great because it gave me a purpose, but also the option to sit on the porch if I needed to. I was tasked with pulling weeds 😂, but the sunshine felt great! I drank a couple gallons of water and tea, and by midday I was feeling so much better! Between gardening, working in the kitchen, and chasing Greta out of a mud hole, the day flew by! Greta is living her best farm life and I feel so loved and cared for here. This is truly a unique and special place, and I’m so thankful for the experience of working here for the day, despite the circumstances. At the end of the day, Greta and I camped at the farm away from the main house and hostel. A few holy WOH moments from the mountains this week. 🤯 By brother and I are currently training for winter volcano climbs in the Pacific Northwest so just about every weekend we are going higher, hiking further, and carrying more weight. It sucks, but we love it so much. #type2fun This last weekend we finally bagged the one and only Mount Defiance. It’s the only hike in the Columbia River Gorge I have not done in the last decade of living here because of how intense it is. We’ve talked about doing it for months and our one condition was to not hike it in the rain but with the winter season window closing and our list of volcanos growing, we landed in the exact conditions we didn’t want. 😂 Rain, wind, snow, and consistent 1100’ grade for 5+ miles to the summit. #continentaldividetrail prep time! On my last thru of the #at2023 I used bounce boxes all the way to Damascus, VA (first 500mi). By the time I opened that last box, I was sick of what I had packed (taste buds WILL change). This time around I’m only using them at hard to #resupply points. Within NM Doc Campbell, Pie Town, and Ghost Ranch Pic is an example of some of the food I eat while on trail. Of course other items are missing like peanut M&Ms, Sour Patch Kids, Fruit Rollups, beef jerky. These are some of my favs when it comes to meals. @peakrefuel Chicken Teriyaki is on another level. It’s amazing. @goodtogofoods Mushroom Risotto with beef jerky is 🤌 and various @mtnhouse meals (rice & chicken, buffalo style mac & cheese). Yes I know Knorr and Idaho dry potatoes are cheaper. However they lack protein and weigh the exact same as these meals. HYOH.
